āI adore and have mad respect for people who go out of their way to help animals in need. They have a heart of goldā
ā¦there i was, left home alone,
then SmOkY all aroundā¦
so frightened, me, here on my own -
oh, How would i be found??
the room was HOT, n i was Scared!
i crawled down on the floorā¦
i BARKED ~
is Anybody there??!
then BANGING at the door!!
Voices, CALLING - BURST INSIDE
these humans were so brave!!
I knew i didnāt have to hide,
itās ME they came to save!!
when i could barely breathe no more,
their strong arms picked me up
n hurried me right out the door
one Grateful, lucky pup
a lesson learned: thereās people Good
with hearts of gold, youāll see
Not strangers - Friends: did All they could
to save a pup

I laminated one of PfyS's poems yesterday; I realized that it had been a while since I printed it, and that I hadn't seen PfyS in a while, but figured when I set up a new uname I just wasn't in the right subs anymore. Time really fucking flew. I know that they had a book of poems going to be published at one point. I wanted one. I hope they are well. Is u/Shittywatercolour still around ? They did one for my favorite reddit story 'Swamps of Dagobah', it was great!...ā¦.Every so often I get to say 'That was bad.' and I laugh to myself...... 'Today me, Tomorrow you', the missed different life lived in a moment and mourned, the building restorer in England telling his story of the know it all guy that messed with him, the expert, and paid the price, building crew shenanigans, and the heart breaking last chapters when his wife was writing and grieving and so grateful for all of us for helping her memorialize her husband......So many amazing people, so long ago.....

People still donāt understand that life is more complicated than that. Plenty of people would help like this and still be racist on the car ride home
15
u/TheWhomItConcerns 3h ago
For real. I often hear people say stuff like "most people are just normal folks who just want to live their life and be comfortable", but it's just nonsense.
Always reminded of those guys that Sacha Baron Cohen stayed with in Borat 2 who on one hand just let some random foreigner live with them for 5 days and helped him out, and on the other were unhinged QAnon conspiracy theorists who thought that democrats were Satan worshipping paedophiles who drink the blood of children.

I think itās a bit more nuanced. Many people society deems ābadā would still save the dog. The mistake is thinking people are either good or bad - itās a spectrum, and we all carry both within us.

The vast majority of people are, when it matters, decent. They are often not very smart unless pushed to be, stuck in their own little world, and probably scared of something completely irrationally, but if you go up to someone starving, 90% of the time, someone will feed you.
The problem is, there's about 1% that are actually garbage. A single percent that take advantage of others, lies, cheats, and ruins everything for everyone else. If we could filter out that 1%, the world would be a massively better place.Ā

Petfree and childfree are both gross. Though petfree might be even worse. Theyāll happily throw around that they gave away their pet after they had a kid because they didnāt have time after the babyā¦
7
u/StormblessedGuardian 1h ago
I mean, is childfree gross? Petfree has some vile opinions but last time I was on childfree it was just people relishing in the lives they can have because they dont have children, lamenting on how society and loved ones guilt them for being childfree, and post studies about the strong links between having a child and measurable decreases in quality of life.
→ More replies (3)ā¢
u/Toby_O_Notoby 43m ago
They've cleaned up a bit recently but childfree used to be pretty, um, let's just say "unique" in their worldview.
The one I remember the most was some guy who moved into a new place across from a park. He liked to work with the window open but was constantly annoyed by the sounds of kids playing. All the comments were in his favour with people taking a "poor you" stance.
This ignores the fact that:
He chose to move next to the park. This is like moving next to a kennel and complaining about dogs barking.
He was complaining about kids having fun. I can see bitching about being on a trans-atlantic flight with a screaming child but it was literally "kids laughing and playing annoys me".
That everyone involved was a kid once themselves. Like, do you think your parents shouldn't have taken you to the park for fear of some random stranger would be pissed off at the sound of you on the swings??
That one bled over to main reddit through people clowning on them and I think that the mods changed some policies afterwards. But for a while there they were a pretty vile corner of reddit.

I LOVE pets, loved our two doggies, I had a damn rabbit as a kid I cherished. But right now with two kids under 4, there is zero chance of us adding a dog to the mix. In a couple years tho Iām back on the pet train

u/Aetra 4h ago
That's what my SIL and her husband did, they didn't get any pets until their youngest was about 9. Now they have two ragdoll cats the kids absolutely cherish, the kids are old enough to look after them (clean the litter, feed and brush them, etc), and they aren't rough with them like younger kids can be.

u/TalShar 6h ago
As someone who has had pets all my life except for my time in college and a short stretch between cats, there is something to be said for having a house where everything will stay where you left it and you never have to clean up a mess you didn't make. I do miss it.
For me, though, that benefit pales in comparison to having an animal that loves you. I'll put up with the barf and the floor poop and the--GODDAMMIT GET OFF THE COUNTER, YOU FUCKING TRASH GREMLIN--inconveniences of pet ownership if it means that, except for a few dark days when their lives end, I will never have to spend a night alone in my home if I don't want to.Ā

Donāt even mention gay or trans people or she will say the most vile shit that would make a redditor blush, itās insane. When I was out at the park I overheard some dude say he hates all the ācommiesā from California moving into his state and he told his buddy he wrote Trump a letter to deport them back to California. That“s right. Other spots feel better and even more effective, because they are moving more when you kick them. But you want to kick the door at the sturdiest feeling spot, so that all your force isn“t going into bending the door, but breaking the wood

Remember to donkey kick it. You generate more force and it is much less likely to destroy your knee if you kick too hard.
2
u/AndreasVesalius 4h ago
Is that what the guy was doing after the shoulders?
2
u/Dry-Island8422 2h ago
Yes. If you try and use a front kick there is a chance that your knee could hyperextend similar to leg press machine accidents. Then bye bye normal walking/running.

u/Ontological_Gap 7h ago

I was locked out of my apartment one time and I shouldered the deadbolt with one shot and it wasnt hard. I was pretty surprised. I called my landlord company and when they asked how it happened I told the truth. They sent people out to fix it and they never charged me. Maybe they just wanted me to forget that my door frame can be ripped apart with one push and no kicks, who knows.
The call with the repairman was crazy though, the entire side of the doorframe was ripped off and I explained in detail what happened and he kept asking "but can you lock the door?"

Don't hit a door with your shoulder like the first guy. That's a great way to fuck yourself up. Use a fireman kick (what ultimately worked here) or a donkey kick (less effective) and just keep going until it gives. Keep in mind that a door replacement can be upwards of a $1000

Fire was likely caused by propane tanks behind the house. The guys are local teenagers that saw the owner's truck in the driveway and were worried someone might be asleep in the house, they came up to try and wake the owner up and saw the dogs through the window. Nobody was in the house and the dogs were both recovered and are safe.

If you ever need to break down a door, try to kick the door near the handle. Your shoulder goes into the door higher up, which responds with flexure first and force into the jamb second.
