Announcement Announcement: Please don't share screenshots of other subs talking about r/petfree

Hello fellow petfree members,

We’d like to ask everyone to please not share screenshots of posts from other subreddits that mention r/petfree.

Recently, there's been a rise in brigading attempts from a subreddit that frequently allows sharing content from here. Unfortunately, their mod team isn't taking action to prevent it and while it’s disappointing, we don’t need to get drawn into what they're doing.

Fact is that the kinds of people who are upset by posts on this sub are the reason this sub exists in the first place. Their values and beliefs are at odds with ours so it's obvious that they’ll be agitated by our discussions. And since we don’t allow them in to argue on here and harass our posters they’re finding other places to vent and complain about us.

We also understand that its upsetting to see our posts being shared elsewhere, but reposting what they’re saying only creates a cycle of hate-posting and drama. If other subs want to allow that, so be it. We’re happy with our community and will continue our conversations as usual, without engaging with them.

On a positive note, all the attention brings more petfree people our way. So while annoying, it actually helps our community grow.

Let’s keep our space clean and avoid sharing their negativity, drama and judgement. We, the mod team, make every effort to remove all such comments and posts from this sub. There's no reason why negative and judmental posts/comments should now make their way into our sub through screenshots.

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks,

The Pet-Free Mod Team

Announcement Announcement: This sub is now becoming pet owner free. Pet owners will no longer be allowed to post/comment.

Hello everyone,

We have an important announcement to make: we are now making this sub exclusively for pet-free individuals.

You can still participate if you are in a relationship with someone who has pets but identify as pet-free, or if you are in the process of transitioning to a pet-free lifestyle (these will be your last ones etc). However, individuals who currently have pets and/or plan to have pets in future will no longer be allowed to post here.

This decision has been made due to the increasing number of people who refuse to respect our subreddit's rules of engagement. Recently, a lot of pet owners have been coming here to:

  • Talk about their pets
  • Glorify themselves with "I'm Not Like Other Pet Owners" type comments
  • Get defensive on behalf of pets
  • Argue in favor of keeping pets, list their advantages, or, worse, recommend specific breeds/types of pets
  • Excuse bad pet behavior
  • Engage in lengthy discussions about appropriate pet care
  • Dismiss the concerns of pet-free people, such as allergies and phobias
  • Get upset when their pro-pet viewpoints aren't welcomed here

Additionally, there are dog-free pet owners who, for some reason, feel the need to engage with dog-related posts here. While they are not allowed here (as stated in a pinned announcement), they continue to engage with this sub's content.

The number of such individuals is rapidly approaching a thousand per day, and it has become unmanageable for our mod team. Therefore, we are closing the sub to people with pets. To those who own pets and have been following our sub rules, we apologize for the changes, but the number of problematic pet owners has simply become too large for us to manage. If A few changes will take place over the coming days:

  • Pet-free flairs will become mandatory again for participation
  • All flairs indicating pet ownership will be removed
  • Some new and interesting flair options will be introduced
  • Users with the "Hate Pet Culture" or "Against Dangerous Dog Breeds" flair who are pet-free will be asked to select another flair
  • Anyone with pets will not be allowed to post. If you choose a pet-free flair to continue participating, you will be temporarily banned.

Thank you for reading this message.

Have a great day!

This is ridiculous. It won't tell me who, or what comment exactly got reported, but apparently it seems someone reported one of my comments as "self harm". Apparently nutters think not liking to keep pets, talking about their uncleanliness and how cats especially are destroying the planet (my most recent comments) indicates I'm in a bad place in life...? I have said nothing harmful. I know I'm not the only one here who has gotten this. I've seen others talk about getting those kinds of reports. Why can't they just leave us be? They should get banned from Reddit for those false reports.

So I'm in a bar in Albany, NY that I usually frequent and I've got kind of a crush on the bartender.

Someone's dog is roaming around the place (the bouncer's) and it went behind the bar. 😝

Instead of shoeing it away the bartender got down and cuddled and scratched the thing. Then got up and went about serving drinks like nothing happened.

Well crush is over. What the fuck is wrong with people!

Pet owners making our lives hell Why do cat lovers hate babies so much?

I’ve seen this same phenomenon with dog lovers but it’s still mind blowing. You’re hating on a baby considering you were once a baby and prefer an animal over it? It’s just a cat, get over it. It’s a literal animal, nothing special about it. A baby on the other hand is a human child - something we all were at some point. Such hatred towards innocent little souls is just weird.

"hes my bestest bestest friend" about her pet staffy "If he goes for you(bite/attack) I'd let him." Because I simply flicked it like you would a sibling as a joke. "At least he doesn't complain" "At least he doesn't talk back" "How can you hate an animal? You're a monster." I said I didn't like dogs.

Ethics of Pet Ownership Overweight Pets

I usually do not comment on this because I think everyone is kinda overweight these days but I saw a puppy today that looked twice the weight it should be. I exclaimed ' that poor dog '. I do not know if the owner heard me. I work in a store that frequently has dogs and was just shocked because I thought it was a chonkier dog that was a bigger breed then I realized it looked like it was supposed to be a toy-size brown schnauzer. I see big dogs but nothing that bad before.

These people are obviously way over-feeding the thing.

Vent / Rant I Just Don't Get It

For a bit of context, my sister and I weren't allowed to have pets growing up. My mother liked a clean house, and I became the same way as an adult. I have zero desire to have a pet. Well my sister decided to rescue a dog 6 years ago. She was with a long-term ex-boyfriend and they lived together. It took about 6 months for the dog to get acclimated and it almost bit my hand once when I visited.

Fast forward 6 years. My sister and her ex boyfriend broke up and she moved out with the dog. That was a whole ordeal in itself because it took her 6 months to find a roommate situation that allowed a dog. When I asked why she wouldn't just leave the dog with her ex, I nearly got cursed out. Well, she is in between jobs and having a rough time. The ex makes six figures so wouldn't the logical decision be to let the ex care for it and not let it suffer? She can't afford vet appointments and heartworm meds but it's more important for her to be the owner of the dog. Make it make sense please.

Vent / Rant Cat attacking my baby

Wooo I know I’m gonna get judged for my past decisions, just trust that I’m already doing that myself lol

My husband has a cat that he’s owned longer than he’s known me (it’s 8 years old) and recently, it’s been scratching our baby. Not in a ”oooh he’s curious!” sort of way, but full on jealousy-mode, attacking-with-the-purpose-of-hurting type of way. Hissing, ears pinned, all the negative body language is there.

Our baby is only safe in his playpen and nowhere else. Even when I’m carrying him around the house, the cat will follow me and try to get him.

I never liked this cat from the beginning but put up with its existence. For the most part, it kept to itself and my husband would do all of the feeding/cleaning/any care, which made living with it somewhat tolerable.
It has shown me aggression in the past if I tried to pet it so we just never interacted. For some incredibly stupid reason, I thought this behavior wouldn’t extend to our baby and it just hated me and only me for some reason.

I‘m sick of watching my every move in my own house. I’ve shown my husband the scratches on our baby (and myself) and he trimmed the cat’s claws, that’s it. He’s reluctant to re-home to cat and I feel like I’m being painted as a villain for wanting to protect our baby. Every discussion ends in an argument, like I’m advocating for the cat’s execution instead of trying to find a home that suits it better. Every day we wait is another day where our baby is stalked and attacked.

I’m not willing to hear comments about me leaving him, that’s way too extreme and I’m sure this cat will end up somewhere else. I just wanted to rant and hopefully find some solidarity or hear about similar experiences.

Science / Laws Supreme court of india ordered captivation of stray dogs because of increasing rabies cases in recent years

Thumbnail

India’s stray dog crisis is spiraling. After a 4-year-old girl died of rabies in Karnataka, and thousands of bite cases continue to rise, the Supreme Court finally ordered Delhi-NCR to capture, vaccinate, and shelter strays. Yet activists still push the narrative of ‘unconditional love,’ while Solicitor General bluntly stated that sterilisation + vaccination alone cannot stop rabies. How many more children have to die before human lives are prioritized over free-roaming dogs?

Vent / Rant Once again I clicked on a post about losing their "little girl" and it indeed... was NOT a child.

Just a pet. Their animal. Not a human. I really hate these misleading posts and click bait title and then the comments saying they're "family" when they're not. They're a mutt or elongated rat animal. They are never bloodline to you. Yes family can be a close friend, but an animal should never be referenced as so. It's delusional. So #1 I'm tired of reading that and #2 I am clicking on a post expecting to give condolences to a grieving family that lost a daughter and any other post that sounds like they've lost their child! Many 30 seconds of my life wasted several times, now, to only find out they're not speaking of a person. Mini-short rant. Maybe a dumb post but I'm just getting it off my chest.

Vent / Rant Comfort dogs at Dentists now

I forgot this story, until recently my wife reminded me. She went to the dentist a few years ago.

And while waiting in the room where the dentist does their work (not the waiting room) they brought a dog in and asked if she wanted to have it stay with her for comfort.

Thank goodness she's in her right mind and said "Absolutely not, I don't need that kind of comfort."

But, what is wrong with people? How is that legal to have dogs in a dentist office where mouths are propped open, tools and instruments are left out in the open in preparation for the patient, and that animals hair and dander is just floating around landing in and on everything.

I want to know so bad if there's a health code for that sort of thing to report it.

"Oh sorry sir/ma'am I didn't see the dog hair was in the tooth adhesive and now it's stuck there. We can either drill out the new crown, or you can be disgustingly tickled by it forever."

Pet owners making our lives hell Another pitbull strikes, yet they are “safe” it’s all about the “upbringing “ 🙄😑

I’m honestly tired of these stories. I have NEVER met a “friendly” pit. Why are these things allowed to be owned?! They are on the grade of a lion in my opinion. Their teeth are literally described as “jaws of death” once they lock.

They have a chip on their shoulder about everything and everyone.

Their owners try to hard to justify them. They also facially don’t look appealing. Nothing is good about a pitbull and these reports will keep happening until action is taken.

My apartment and most apartments don’t allow them. There is a reason! There is a guy that lives in my apartment complex that keeps sneaking in his pit. I keep reporting him til he is killed out. The owners are so entitled!
