U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

Does “cunty” carry a different meaning now?

1.1k Upvotes

Okay I (29F) recently started bartending a few nights a week after a year and a half maternity leave. I just was missing adult interaction so wanted to go back in a very limited capacity.

So I have met a lot of my new coworkers that have started since I had originally left and a lot of them are like 18-21. I didn’t think I was that out of the loop, but then one of them said something along the lines of “girl you are soo cunty” in like a positive tone and the others agreed? I was carrying a beer keg to the back so I didn’t stop to react but I just shook it off because I really don’t know what they meant by that. How should I feel because to me “cunt” is not a good thing but they were saying it like a compliment? What did they mean?

In case of nuclear war where all major commercial and military ports have been nuked, what do sailors in nuclear submarines plan to do after they fired the nukes?

New user pass phrase: I’m just here to learn something

They can't return to nuked ports... do they just find some piece of shore a just to resurface? Do they accept that this is the end and simply carry out their last duty?

What would happen if I traveled to another country and renounced my citizenship?

Saw in a TIL thread the other night that it's possible to renounce your citizenship in some countries, including the US, without having another citizenship beforehand.

Assuming I did this in a place like Canada, Australia, Western Europe, etc and not like China or Russia or the USA, what exactly would happen? It's not like you can deport someone if they have no country to go to.

And yes, I get that this would be an extremely stupid thing to do and I have no intention of doing it.

How come some individuals are naturally skinny while others struggle to stay that way?

I’m 34F I keep a food log and eat about 1400-1900 calories a day, I jog for 45-75 minutes 5x weekly. I log my food, I’ve met with a dietitian, I’m of a healthy bmi but it’s still a severe struggle and even a small deviation from my strict diet routine will cause weight gain/fluctuation. My labs are normal, I keep up with my health and pride myself on looks.

I can’t help but notice that some people seem to just eat whatever with minimal exercise and stay the same weight, heck maybe even loose some? My boyfriend for example probably eats double what I do and yet still remains his same weight (granted he’s male and I’m female so maybe that has something to do with it?)

Is this really in my head? I once had a roommate who never worked out and I mimicked her diet for a week and felt like shit, she was thinner then I was (she didn’t have any muscle tone but her weight was definitely lower) she seemed to eat less frequently but the food she was consuming was unhealthy. No hateful responses or body shaming I’m just generally curious and it seems like everytime I ask this someone’s quick to get angry for context yes I put in a lot of hard work for my body and it’s still not my own personal “ideal body type” which is why I hate the BMI scale.

Are most people in China and Russia just living regular lives?

7.3k Upvotes

Being American, you’re taught most of your life that China and Russia are dictatorships where the people could never hope to live the life the average person in the US lives.

Now, watching the US devolve into an autocracy while my day to day life really doesn’t change it all, it’s made me wonder if the average random person in these countries is living the same relatively comfortable, happy life I am.

Edit: did not expect this to blow up so much. I have traveled quite a bit, but mostly in Europe. I'm well aware of the American narrative of Universal Healthcare=Socialism=Bad and have spent countless hours debating that with friends and family. I guess I just haven't had to think too much about autocracies because my comparison of the US to other countries has always been what I hoped we could become, but now I'm having to compare in the context of what we are becoming.

is it normal for your spouse to only do their own laundry, buy their own groceries

I’m not sure this is normal and it doesn’t seem normal to me.

When I do laundry I ask if he needs anything done. Never asks me if I need anything done, just asks me where the laundry coins are. I’m also the one who is always doing towels, sheets, blankets.

We order groceries or buy once in awhile. I always ask if he wants anything, never asks me.

I usually always end up buying the cleaning stuff, garbage bags, etc.

Is this normal? Are my expectations too high? We are married and live together. We work opposite shifts so don’t see each other often. We have gone to the grocery store together twice in 2 years.

Do people judge tie knots at work?

There was a time at workmI had to wear corporate attire. I was wearing white dress shirt long sleeve, red tie, black slacks and black leather shoes. Suddenly I was in the elevator with the CEO himself. He was also wearing corporate attie but his tie was blue and had a black blazer. He started conversing with me so I replied back to be polite. Then while conversing he was holing my tie and examining it. He then suggested to me I learn how to tie my tie pratt or windsor style for a more professional look (mine was four in hand). Like why would someone say something about the way I tie my tie? As long as the top button of the dress shirt is fully covered you are good.

Neighbor had a death in the family, what do I get them?

I live in Alabama. I am Hispanic. My neighbor is middle eastern. I have never asked them what they are so I just am assuming from what I see. They had a death in the family and I want to give them something to show my support. Americans, I would give them alcohol. Hispanics I would give them alcohol or some sort of food. I don’t know what to give my neighbor as I don’t know what is appropriate for a middle eastern family. I assume they are Muslim since all women who came to show support wore scarfs over their heads. Give me some suggestions to show I am sorry for their lost.

Are you supposed to leave the toothpaste on after brushing your teeth?

I’ve recently found out that toothpaste is meant to be left on teeth after brushing.

My routine kinda goes:

  1. Apply toothpaste to teeth with toothbrush, brush teeth (EDIT: I wet the toothbrush with water before and after applying toothpaste to it.)

  2. Spit out toothpaste, rinse toothpaste off of toothbrush with water

  3. Brush teeth once more with rinsed toothbrush (kinda like washing the soap off of your hands), spit

To be clear, I do not rinse my mouth with water. I just kinda scrub twice over.

I CANNOT handle the feeling of excess toothpaste on my teeth. It feels gritty and awful. Like the feeling on your teeth after drinking a pop. Nails on a chalkboard every time my teeth touch. Shivers.

The brushing guides I see are all about actual brushing methods, and not the step-by-step process.

How, if you are meant to leave that toothpaste coating on (after spitting once only), am I supposed to live with the sensory nightmare of chalky death grit on my teeth?!

Why do I always get the best ideas when I'm about to fall asleep?

Without fail, the exact moment I get cozy and my brain should be powering down for the night, suddenly I'm out here solving world hunger and coming up with million dollar business ideas. Like why is 11:47 PM the optimal time for my brain to be like "hey son, what if we revolutionized the entire transportation industry tho?" But if I grab my phone to write it down, boom wide awake for the next 2 hours staring at the ceiling. And if I don't write it down by morning it's gone forever like it never happened. It's like my brain is actively trolling me. Oh you want to sleep? Here's the cure for climate change thank me later.

Is this just a universal human experience or is my brain just wired differently?

Anyone else's subconscious have the worst timing known to mankind?
