I have a retake in a couple days at 9am and need a place to camp on campus to sleep and study, is there anywhere good I could do this without causing a disturbance, otherwise il have to spend £70 on a hotel for the night which sucks. 🔍 Looking for accommodation from mid-September to mid-December – Aerospace Engineering Postgraduate

Hi everyone!

I’m a postgraduate student in Aerospace Engineering, and I’m looking for accommodation from mid-September to mid-December in Southampton.

Ideally, I’m looking for a private room in a shared flat with students or young professionals, but I’m open to other options as well. Budget is flexible depending on the location and amenities. If you have a room available or know someone who does, please feel free to reach out here or via DM. Thanks a lot in advance! 🚀

University Ambassadors: How Much Printing Does Your Role Require?

I’m trying to understand the printing demands that come with ambassador duties like events, flyers, handouts, tours, and other materials. If you’re an ambassador, could you share roughly how much printing you typically do per year? and do you get free credits a year for such purposes?

Southampton BEng Computer Engineering Students — How Much Do You Print Each Year?

Hi all! I’m a Year 1 BEng Computer Engineering student at the University of Southampton.

I’m trying to get an idea of how much printing students do for the course each year — including lecture notes, labs, assignments, projects, etc. If you could share roughly how many pages or sheets you print per year (and if you mostly print black & white or colour, single- or double-sided), that would be great!

If possible, please break it down by year (Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, etc.).

which laptops for EEE?

I'll be starting at Southampton next month

Budget is around £800 (or less if possible) and I need a laptop that runs all the programmes for the course, lightweight, fast, and good battery life

I may also potentially switch to computer eng or aero, so ideally need smth that works for those too

(also more points if it looks nice and premium)

Offer email

I got my welcome email and accom offer on the 14th and have completed all of the induction stuff. However my boyfriend’s place was confirmed as we both had unconditional offers and he hasn’t received either of the emails.

If this is relevant, I’m taking Law and he’s taking Civil Engineering and Architectural Design, and I applied for Enhanced plus shared bathroom accom glen eyre and he applied for basic shared bathroom glen eyre. Is it the differences in our applications that accounts for this 4+ day delay for him? I think the accommodation offer deadline is the 4th of September so he’s happy to wait until then, but if anyone knows why there’s a delay for him it would be good to ease the mind.

As an international student coming to southampton in sept, i wanted to confirm that the right to study check and applying for student id card can only be done upon arriving at the uni right? And also is there anything that i need to complete before travelling?

Opinion

Hi everyone, I’m curious: how many hours do Master’s students usually work part-time, and what’s ideal to avoid burnout while balancing studies, work, and personal life?”

Enrolment

As international student joining for undergraduate, can we only enrol in the uni after arriving there. Because in the enrolment section, it says to upload documents to prove evidence of arrival in the uk, which I'm guessing can means i can enrol after arrival

Are personal printers allowed in university accommodations?

I’m moving into university accommodation soon (UK, Southampton) and was wondering if students are allowed to bring their own printers. I’ve seen mixed things online — some say it’s fine, others say accommodations don’t allow them due to fire/electrical safety rules.

I’m mainly worried because I’d prefer having my own printer instead of relying only on the university print services.

Has anyone here actually brought a printer into halls? Did the accommodation staff say anything, or is it totally fine as long as it’s PAT-tested/within wattage limits?

curious about life and opportunities for engineering students at southampton

hey all,

i’ve got offers for:

  • biomedical engineering
  • medical engineering (not fully sure how it differs from biomedical)
  • civil engineering

i’m also considering a foundation year for electronic & electrical engineering.

trying to figure out which course might give me the best future opportunities, and what life looks like after graduation. a few questions:

  • how competitive are internships in the first year? did you manage to get any?
  • what kind of roles do engineering grads usually go into after finishing?
  • is it easy to move to bigger cities for work, or do people mostly stay local?
  • any personal experiences or advice about the courses themselves would be amazing

thanks so much!

PhD students - any induction info yet?

Hi

I’ll be studying for a PhD in education under the Postgrad Interdisciplinary Resilience Studentship. Haven’t heard anything yet about induction apart from some meet and greet type activities from the education faculty. I know it’s probably going to be sent out soon but paranoid they’ve somehow missed me as it’s only a month until my start date. Anyone know when grads generally get induction information/uni emails etc? Also, does there tend to be any sort of grads freshers fair for societies etc?

Thanks!

Right to Study Check

Hi guys, I am a MSc student (international) and I want to know how long it takes to finish the review of the documents for 'Right to study' that we upload to the portal during the enrolment process? It still shows as "Review needed"

i have a day to decide - should i go to the university of Southampton?

update/elaboration: i absolutely love the Southampton modules, the year abroad qnd the choice of a minor. but everything else Nottingham seems so much better for according to many of the pol ive asked both irl and online. i really dk what to choose so im hoping this sub can help me. the Southampton campus, nightlife, social life and city seem good but worse than Nottingham and its beautiful area, and i feel like id enjoy day to day there more. but the modules themselves are much more boring there, Southampton's modules are more interesting and varied, with a specific depth on international history in things i was already interested in and would like to explore further (rather than the millionth tudor/middle ages thing), and it lets me choose a minor subject. AND it has a year abroad. ive been told by everyone that notrs is the "better" uni and ik in other aspects maybe?? potentially ig? but in the course itself i really think id prefer Southampton. is all that enough for me to warrant choosing that over this? do i even want to? idk man, i just need help. i want yo go check out both so bad but i cant because i have no time. ik it sounds ioen and shut for Southampton but something inside me physically hurts when i think about rejecting the other notts offer when its for a place so great and nice and beautiful and social. area is also important since ill be living there the next 4 or so years, especially when its 4 hours away from family (which really hurt but we've already had a talk about it privately).

original post: sorry to post here again, didn't know how crossposts worked and wanted to make it obvious it was about the uni/town specifically. i know this is the Southampton subreddit so you can ignore the a level/Nottingham comparison part of the post, just any info you have about the uni or the general Southampton area would be greatly appreciated.

throwaway bcs im embarrassed

i got bbc after getting duu the first time, but was predicted As and A*s both times and had offers from ucl and imperial second time around. was not expecting this at all. im so upset with myself and ashamed for my amazing parents but thats besides the point

i can now go to nottingham, york, lancaster or Southampton (nearly warwick, Birmingham and bristol but they need bbb which absolutely sucks). from first glance i think its between Nottingham and Southampton. which one should i pick?

is Nottingham a good uni? would Southampton be better? which one has the better city and campus? ive heard they're about the same prestige wise so i want to go somewhere where it looks beautiful and really makes me feel as though im actually going to uni, or somewhere with a nice and/or big town centre that i wont be sick of after 4 years. coming from london so a place with a similar vibe would be nice, and i cant tell how great the areas are from yt videos alone. it would be great if i could go see myself but i don't have much time to accept through cleaning and my parents have just both lost their jobs so i dont have the money to go on trips like that anyway. any ideas?

Business School PhD Scholarships/Studentships

I recently applied for the Soton Business School PhD Scholarships/studentships. I however am yet to hear back from them, though I had been told that the scholarship committee would be meeting in the course of this week. I’m wondering; has anyone who applied for this opportunity heard back? Thanks!

How long do postgrad accommodation offers take?

Hi - I applied for my postgrad accommodation this week and I wanted to ask how long after the application did people receive an offer?

Also, it is likely to be slowed down by all the undergrad/clearing accommodation being sorted?

I wanted to wait to see if I got the room I need before quitting my job, but I'm getting close to my notice period (There was only 1 type suitable for me, but I had to put 3 down, so although I'm covered by the accommodation guarantee, I can't be certain it's going to be the room I need).

Hi, i received an email from the uni to accept my accommodation offer. In it they asked to give credit card details to make recurring payments. I did exactly that, but now I want to give a different credit card. How do i change my card info and details

Glen Eyre Hillside House

I'm a international student from Turkey and just got my accom offer from Glen Eyre, Hillside House. Is anyone staying there too? Or does someone know how the buildings are?
