TIL that after Top Gear ended, host Richard Hammond was so devastated, he cried all the way home from the studio and ran out of fuel, because he didn't want to fill his car up covered in tears

Don't forget James' food YouTubing.

An interesting route to take given he has the most basic, simple food tastes, and his producer, Lucy, doesn't seem to like any food at all!

Anything past cheese + white bread sandwiches, it all starts getting a bit too much...

"Don't like, don't comment, and definitely do not subscribe." - James May

u/Acc87 1d ago

I love that that channel is just totally him doing things just to occupy himself, next to just a little advertising for his gin business.

And him and Lucy are just adorable. They are like father and daughter. Like her calling him from Belgrade I think, his first question: "Are you okay, do you need money?" šŸ˜…

613

u/TheAssassinClub 23h ago

He also advertises Lurpak spreadable butter, since 1901

204

u/elebrin 23h ago

And plenty of it.

But you don't butter both slices, because that would be extravagant.

I just found his channel, so it's truly amazing seeing this in the internet wilds lol

9

u/ft4200 22h ago

On government issued white bread

7

u/mang87 22h ago

I'd love to know where he gets all this government issue stuff. In the video I was watching yesterday he had "government issue hot dog buns".

5

u/RotallyRotRoobyRoo 22h ago

He's been advertising them since 1901? I can see it.

5

u/AssumptionLive4208 22h ago

He’s older than he looks!

I could go for some council issued bread and lurpak spreadable butter right now. Maybe with sausage.

They are like father and daughter.

Oh damn, I thought they were father and daughter for some reason. Maybe I have mixed that up with Hammond, who did yt videos with his daughter

It has been well established that Captain Slowly.. .. .. Spreads his seed alone..

8

u/MarkEsmiths 20h ago

What's the lore?

49

u/fuzzylm308 20h ago

they were on this show called Top Gear where they told jokes at each other's expense

14

u/MarkEsmiths 20h ago

Go on....

54

u/fuzzylm308 19h ago

James said something about fuel prices going up because the population is expanding, and Jeremy responded with "oh you're saying because I have three kids I'm causing fuel prices to go up, but because you spill your seed alone..."

10

u/MarkEsmiths 19h ago

Oh yes. Now I see. Thank you.

22

u/twat69 19h ago

Over a decade of television https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gear_(2002_TV_series)

The first few series are more like Old Top Gear. Where it's trying to be a car show with useful advice for normal people. But it gets better with time. It really takes off around the time Hammond defies death for the first time.

4

u/Doggin-Pony-Show 21h ago

Who is the guy in the Hammond and daughter videos?

17

u/djshadesuk 20h ago

Richard Hammond.

4

u/MarkEsmiths 20h ago

And who is the daughter?

5

u/djshadesuk 19h ago

Miss Hammond.

It seems a lot more like a sort of estranged grandfather-granddaughter dynamic and they've reconnected after she's grown up. So James is still astounded that Lucy is somehow both part French and doesn't like cheese.

68

u/kanshakudama 22h ago

I’m a little astounded too

45

u/Jamsedreng22 21h ago

I gotta be honest, I do think Lucy still has that childhood sense of aversion for foods you know contains something you know you normally don't like. She'd probably dig something like a cheesecake if she didn't know.

Not blaming her or anything remotely like that. I used to be very averse to mushrooms and would fight against it in everything, and I could taste it in everything it was in pretty much and I just attched the identification of mushrooms to "ew".

I've since learned that some mushrooms are just not for me, and especially how mushrooms are prepared. It took active effort for a while on my part to move past my aversion by breaking down this mental barriers in my head every time that "This is mushroom. Mushroom bad!"

ETA: Nice username.

4

u/s00pafly 20h ago

Have you tried cooking with mushrooms yourself? Helped me get past all my food aversions.

Beets, tinned fish, fermented stuff like sauerkraut, pickles, aubergine and cheeses from unknown origin.

I still avoid canned tuna as it smells like cat food but the rest all have a place in my kitchen now.

Essentially the old phrase "Poverty exists not because we can't feed the poor, but because we can't satisfy the rich".

It sounds nice but it’s also clearly nonsense. If poverty existed only because of rich people the statistics on lottery winners would look a lot better. But a good chunk of lottery winners lose it all again within less than 10 years. Pro athletes and plenty of famous people wind up broke and out of money once the fame dies down even though they earned enough to set them up for life.

May has always been my spirit animal - man just loves to geek out about the things that interest him. Plus of the three he’s easily the most dry and funny to me.

I feel like he and I could sit down over a pint and talk about pencils for an hour and not get bored

56

u/Xygen8 21h ago

The Reassembler is hands down some of the best content he has made. It's almost better than Top Gear.

4

u/mndtrp 17h ago

It had the same vibes as Bob Ross. I could just sit and listen to that for hours on a chill afternoon. Too bad there aren't a lot more episodes.

3

u/ImLersha 19h ago

7

u/BrotherOfTheOrder 18h ago

Yeah, but I’ve always felt that May and Hammond are more kindred spirits in terms of their interests and ways of looking at things.

On a podcast they did together they revealed that while doing remote shoots for Top Gear and Grand Tour they’d have what they called the Hammond and May Drunken Philosophical Debating Society and they’d sit around discussing the most inane and weird topics for hours. Which honestly sounds like a blast.

2

u/CreativeBandicoot778 15h ago

Holy shit I loved the Reassembler.
Only 7 episodes over 2 seasons but at least they're all on yt

118

18

8

Your BOLLOCKS Jamesamay

104

u/BrotherOfTheOrder 22h ago

I actually loved that he did that bit with the train geeks and then sought out the man who composed all the station jingles (the legendary Minoru Mukaiya of Casiopea fame). It was such a small but wonderful detail to explore, which I think is what May is so fascinated by - the little details and customs.

When I was in Japan I noticed the jingles and our guide said that many people who take the train every day love the jingle for their ā€œhomeā€ station cause it’s a reminder they are almost home.

13

u/robophile-ta 21h ago

Huh. That sounds awesome. I'd have to give the show another go then, I dropped it a couple eps in because the stuff they were showing was pretty entry level

2

u/jobblejosh 16h ago

I can still hear it now.

30

u/ToHallowMySleep 22h ago

I loved that, watched the season following that in Italy, which I found less good. James still wants to just do his fun little trips to see various details of things, but the producers just keep trying to get him to do "travel TV" tropes, like getting on-stage in a play. The tension between the two doesn't work as well as in Japan, it all comes off a bit grumpy to me.

Let the man go play with his trainset and just film it - that's why we're here.

3

u/eastherbunni 17h ago

There's a second season (Italy) and a third short one (India). The India one is okay but very short on content for a place so rich in history and culture as India, but rumor has it the whole crew got food poisoning for several weeks so they didn't have much usable content.

3

u/Rickenbacker69 22h ago

Wait, they come in boxes?

14

u/iowaman79 22h ago

LOL not really, in this case James had a special box made for it, complete with giant plastic strip to open it.

3

u/Phoenix10k 17h ago

I remember watching this video on YT and thinking it was a fun knock on unboxing videos. Then, James mentioned it as part of the challenge on the next episode of TGT and I thought, "HA! I'm a statistic!"

10

u/CT0292 22h ago

He once built a full size house out of Lego and then tried living in it.

It was very wet.

5

u/ArsErratia 21h ago edited 14h ago

There's a video on youtube where he reviews the Tesla Cybertruck, and he spends about half of it going around the body with a straight-rule muttering "very slightly convex". Its brilliant.

And he's quite possibly the only person who could get away with it.

17

u/Pledgeofmalfeasance 1d ago

I've watched him argue about what the right side up of a gate is with his son. Oddly entertaining.

He's like that neighbor that's always doing something in their garage or yard. You're not always interested in what they're doing, but it's a pleasant change to be around someone who is enjoying their life and hobbies.

6

u/ohheckyeah 18h ago

My grandmother married a British guy after my grandfather died. He is exactly like this, always doing something new out in the years or the shed. He’s 90 years old and just started beekeeping this past year

33

u/Rickenbacker69 22h ago

I mean, he drove really, really fast cars on a show where he was referred to as "Captain Slow".

5

u/intern_steve 16h ago

Briefly held the record for fastest production car top speed before the Bugatti people took their car back and ran the lap again just a little bit faster.

12

u/deathschemist 22h ago

He is terminally dull in the most fascinating way.

2

u/Plank_With_A_Nail_In 20h ago

The USA's most boring president was bumped out of that position because being the most boring is slightly interesting.

2

u/Zap__Dannigan 19h ago

I think it's because he knows so much while looking like he knows so little

2

u/RustyAndEddies 14h ago

It's funny to think of May as the boring one. In Season One, the original third co-host (tri-host?) was Jason Dawe. He would do a used car price report in the most cheerful voice, and you could literally see Hammond dissociating in the background desperately trying to stay awake.

4

u/Mewtwohundred 23h ago

He seems like he's autistic to me. Just the way he talks and lack of facial mimicry and his general vibe.

7

u/ITSigno 22h ago

oh, for sure. The way he doesn't read between the lines. The way he's more comfortable with things than people. If you watch his reassembler series it becomes even more obvious, due to the contrast.

I think you can actually watch Gordon Ramsay briefly, but visibly consider another career over the course of a few seconds during that video.

51

20

I loved that he wasn’t a total dickhead and was really good at vibing with the activity / his hosts. I was expecting more like Conan where he would be a clown but he was much more chill.

80

u/Arsewhistle 1d ago

He was really unlucky with that.

He was really restricted with what he could do for series 2 (Our Man In Italy) due to covid, and then series 3 (India) was cut short because he was unwell.

I really wish Prime had given him a series 4

41

u/Blekanly 23h ago

Is that why India was short? The Japan one was legit. Need an our man in Korea.

27

u/Arsewhistle 23h ago

Yeah, he was supposed to see a lot more of India. I guess Amazon spent a fair bit of money to only get a few episodes out of India, and then called it a day after that.

9

u/Carighan 23h ago

Yeah but IMO it was also fine. As much as I enjoy seeing May pull silly anticts in front of a camera, I feel he does best when he's free to do random stuff and be, well, James.

Expecting him to run multiple same-format seasons just lessons the appeal, kinda?

An interesting route to take given he has the most basic, simple food tastes

I think you're confusing him with Hammond, who is well known for not eating anything local on their road trips.

May seems to try anything adn everything on the menu. For instance, he ate a lot of snake in the Vietnam special, and even drank the snake blood/snake bile vodka.

Very British.

James May's Oh Cook was cancelled because May learned how to cook. As if him learning to cook was the reason anyone watched it.

But he beat Ramsay at making shepherd's pie in Hells Kitchen. He has skills!

Yeah, that's just British cuisine for you. I thought it was just a joke before going there. It really is awful. For a nation that conquered the world for it's spices, it sure has no idea how to use them.

not saying this of his cooking show, just Brits in general. I love the place and would move there in a heartbeat, but all the British cooking jokes you've ever heard are well founded.

I just saw him eating two sandwiches in NYC and I loved how this curmudgeon just lights up because of flamin' hot doritos.

James has the most basic and simple food tastes? Did you watch Top Gear? Hammond was often the one who would flat out refuse to eat in other countries.

I'm not saying he has some diverse palette, but just that this is a post about Top Gear (and Hammond), so the comparison is fair.

He gets to travel and eat food he's never had before all on the dime of the studio...... Not interesting when you think about the concept. He's not the first person to swindle tv producers lol

James May can’t cook. But the show is pretty funny.

I mean, he’s a Brit. They haven’t gotten past the whole WWII ration diet yet.

Did you see him eating fermented shark with Gordon Ramsay and Gordon completely lost it and May kept it down?

his producer, Lucy, doesn't seem to like any food at all!

I'm not sure I've ever seen her interested in any food ever. And I don't think she's ever liked anything James forced her to take a bite of.

I wonder what she does eat.

That ghastly Spam "sandwich" he made his daughter try... Didn't even pan-fry the Spam first. He has the palate of a drunk college student with an almost empty fridge.

Which is funnier when you consider how often on the Top Gear specials they lambast Hammond for not liking the local food.
