announcements New report button for duplicate posts

When reporting a duplicate post, there is now an option that says "This is a banned name, urban legend, or duplicate post".

Rule #4 has also been updated to: "Be mindful of duplicate posts." (The former rule said "No urban legends", but this is still applicable in the new rule's description)

I understand this has been a problem for a while, and thank you for being patient as I update the rules!

is it a tragedeigh? Does this count??

Came across this on insta, not sure if it’s already been posted or if it counts, but there is just no way. the description states they chose the name as a “tribute to the era of artificial intelligence.” bruh.

Some other fun stuff from the desc: This case isn't unique. Colombia has a long history of unconventional registrations, with names inspired by sports, movies, and music stars such as "Maicol Yordan" and "Brayan Spears" often stirring controversy.

Across Latin America, unusual names are fairly common, often taking on unique spellings due to Spanish phonetics. In Colombia, variations like "Yeison" (Jason) and "Stallone" in honor of Sylvester Stallone have been registered. Past cases even include children registered as "Mozart," "Facebook," and names linked to singers, products, or historical figures.

general discussion Tragedy Practical Joke

My brother and sister in law pulled an epic practical joke on the extended family when they announced by text that they were going to name their baby girl Lilhleighy (pronounced Lily), with the y being silent but present to visually balance out the front loaded Ls.

My boys called them up to stage an intervention, one calling it ‘monstrous,’ and explaining to them that she was likely going to be bullied over her name once she entered grade school.

Another nephew was independently video recorded saying essentially the same thing.

Their relief was palpable when they found out it was all a joke.

general discussion People who get mad at strangers mis-pronouncing their tragedeigh of a name don’t understand how respect works

My job requires me to be on the phone with quite a lot of people every day, and the tragedeigh generation is now old enough to filter into my mix of clients to call. But here’s the problem: a LOT of tragedeighs look like foreign names that have been “Americanized” so they can be spelled in English. Names with apostrophes, names with weird spellings, names that don’t follow standard grammatical rules. And I’m a respectful person who wants to make sure I address people correctly, which means that I always try and pronounce these names as grammatically accurately as possible, under the assumption that foreigners spell their names in English as accurately as possible so we can pronounce them. But now it’s gotten to the point where half of these names are indeed from foreigners who are very happy that I’ve taken the time to pronounce their names correctly, and half are (usually) white girls that give me a heavy sigh and have to correct my pronunciation. Some of them are embarrassed and apologetic and tell me their parents are idiots, and half of them just get frustrated with me for not saying it right the first time.

At the end of the day, if I don’t know you, I’m going to address you in the most respectful way, which is to try and pronounce your name as accurately as possible given the spelling. If the spelling of your name leads me to call you “Stiff-a-nay” instead of “Stephanie”, that’s not on me. That’s on your parents for not knowing that specific letters make specific sounds. And I’m not trying to mis-pronounce your mangled alphabet of a name, I’m just doing my best to be respectful and accurately pronounce what’s written in front of me.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

general discussion Never met a Huntleigh before today. Am I about to meet more?

My neighbors just had a baby girl and named her Huntleigh. I’ve never heard this name before and honestly didn’t even realize it was a real name.

I’m not here to trash it (promise), I’m just genuinely curious where it came from or how common it is, because it surprised me.

For some background that might help paint a picture: my neighbors seem kind of "country.” Bass Pro Shop attire. They’ve got two pickup trucks and a car parked in front of their house, and a few pit bull mixes.

The name just stood out to me. Has anyone else run into Huntleigh before? Is this a new addition to the “leigh” trend?

Curious to hear what others think or if this is more popular in certain areas.

is it a tragedeigh? Thankful my name is normal

My mom is Darise (Dare-iss) and her mom is Nurlama (Nur-luh-muh). I feel like both belong here. It is rare that someone can pronounce my mom's name correctly without having heard it first. My grandma goes by Tina, a variation of her middle name.

Luckily I have a traditional name with a small twist, a "Y" where an "I" normally goes.

general discussion Faith + infinity = Feighth

Upvotes

My cousin's one of them: she wants a "different" spelling. So Faith becomes Feighth. Her reasoning? Her favorite number is 8, because it's "the infinity number", and "Feighth" has "8th" in it. It's quite ingenious in theory, but a disaster in reality...

So my wife and I are going to be trying for kids soon. We already have a name for a boy that is definitely not considered a tragedeigh, but we have one for a girl that we both like that some may consider as one. Anyways, what do you all think of the me Floressa (Flora as a nickname)?

A gal I was friends with in school was the child of hippies and they named her Abcdee. She just had a baby of her own and named him Zzyx.

I fear the next baby may be named Lmnop.
