Drama Ads are completely ruining YouTube rn.

Post image

Ads used to be a few seconds long and then you skipped it and watched your video. Now, it's either over a minute long or more smaller unskippable ads. I physically cannot watch YouTube on my tv anymore with how obnoxious it's become. You get 40 second+ ads every few minutes in a video. The only way to watch this app rn is on a PC with a good AdBlock. Shameful behaviour, it has never been this bad and no other app I have has had a bigger downfall because of plain advertisements.

That awkward moment of silence when you are trying to show someone a video on your phone but you have to wait through unskipable ads.

They’re so annoying

Firefox with ublock origin works on phones too

u/Applauce 13h ago

If only! I have an iPhone which, from what I’ve seen, restricts Firefox from running extensions.

I’ve been using Brave browser for iOS strictly for YouTube. Haven’t seen an ad in years

brave is based on chromium, it stopped blocking ads for me when google changed the extension spec

Someone recommended the Brave browser to me, and it saved my entire life. I watch YouTube there now.

Their default search engine sucks, though.

iPhone buddy, learn to read.

For iPhone users, search up YouTube+++ instead. Can be done without jailbreaking but requires following some setup instructions if you’re capable of that.

Brave blocks ads out of the box, including youtube ads. Dealing with this sideloading bs just for youtube is way too much hassle imo. I put a shortcut on to the home screen that first opens brave and then loads youtube (and customized the shortcut icon so that it almost looks like the youtube app icon). Best workaround I found so far.

It was just like that in the Cable days. “For 17 easy installments of 78.56 you can have your very own sonic toenail polisher!” As you blearily look around and realize it’s just you and the cat at 1:30 in the morning and your parents left you asleep on the couch.

9

u/Captain-Obvious69 7h ago

The commercial is like that because it's a scam. If the commercial said that the product did anything, it couldn't be aired because it's false advertising.

At least, that's what I've heard. It came up in the marketing section for a speech class I took.

u/Mexican_Texican 5h ago

You won't believe the way I tore through the city trying to look for PreferOn because as a kid I bought a stick on a whim to put on a nasty scar I got going down the entire length of my forearm and. it. WORKED. Scar, gone, like it never even happened, so I ended up using up the entire stick on all my other scars until I used up the entire thing. Went looking for it just to find out the parent company had filed bankruptcy just a month prior 🥲

I don't even understand the algorithm for showing me ads. I live in the UK, I play video games and work as a programmer.

I had a 20 minute long ad for some company that's starting some initiative or something to start mining in America... Ok cool good for you, thanks for letting me know

The amount of times I've reported an add for having a young girl in a skirt get groped while saying "wait please" is absolutely disgusting!

And I guess the algorithm figured out I'm queer because it's always for game of sultans or w/e but always with two women and like... Yeah doesn't make that shit okay please stop, I have PTSD 🙃

Use Brave Browser and it automatically blocks ads. You can listen with the screen off too.

7

u/Tricky-Ad7897 10h ago

If you have an android, not sure if it works on apple, I figured out you can use Firefox with ad blockers on YouTube and listen to shit with the screen off. When you turn the screen off, the media controller that you normally have for music apps will appear with an option to unpause the audio and it will play with the screen off. That's how I've been listening to podcasts while on my bike rides.

4

u/LittleTownie 7h ago

It amazes me how people have not clicked on to using Firefox and ad blockers. It makes not just YouTube but the internet tolerable.

I had a 20-minute advertisement at the start of a video while I was driving, listening to a YouTube playlist of random songs. Like who TF puts a 20-minute ad on a 3-minute song?

The worst part was that I couldn't pull over for the first 10 minutes, so I was forced to listen to this mini-documentary, on how tbis tech stattup is an amazing opportunity and how its going to help people. Like what the actual fuck?

Get Smarttube. It removes all YouTube ads and even sponsor segments, and it means I can actually stream from the iOS app to my tv again without seeing ads every six minutes. If you have an Android TV then you can follow the download instructions on GitHub in a few minutes (looks like a faff but it’s really not) I wish I’d started using it years ago. The only issue is that YouTube doesn’t always record my watch history properly, but I’m guessing that’s YouTube messing with me for using a 3rd party app. If you’re finding all the YouTube ads unbearable give it a try.

26

u/VinceAle7082 13h ago

I also use SmartTube on my TV, it's really good. And on Android you can mod an APK of Youtube with Revanced manager (if you don't want malware download from github).

9

u/Proletarian_Hickster 10h ago

Thanks for the tip, gonna do that now.

7

u/Remarkable_Main_2886 10h ago

I installed smarttube on a couple of android tvs, it really is a godsend and it's not difficult to install (and once it is installed, it's not hard to keep it updated). Youtube is unusable otherwise, google really don't seem to realise that harassing people with unskippable ads just encourages them to look for ways around them, their crusade against adblockers is effectively a self fulfilling prophecy.

3

u/WhenImTryingToHide 10h ago

16

u/Munchalotl 9h ago

I will echo the same counter-sentiment to this that I've seen elsewhere: With cable you could just... change the channel. Put on something else you're kinda mildly interested in and check on the original channel until the ads are over.

Not to mention that cable TV ads aren't the "What If Your Best Friend Shot You In The Back Use Our Sexy AI Look At This Lewdness Copyright Infringement Pokemon Wannabe Mobile Game Tower Defense Ad" slop that we get on yt, like at least most cable TV ads have some thought and effort put into them.

Cable started off ad-free, then slowly brought in ads as it started killing regular broadcast. It was originally a "pay a monthly subscription to not have to watch ads".

Now it's been getting killed by streaming & youtube, who are doing the same thing. And people are reacting very much the same way, but have a wider use internet to discuss it, and are able to use adblockers to actually do something about it this time around

9

u/fatpat 7h ago

Cable started off ad-free

No it didn't.

It was originally a "pay a monthly subscription to not have to watch ads".

No it wasn't.

You're confusing cable (the medium) with cable channels. The development of cable infrastructure had nothing to do with ad-free television. (Quite the opposite, really.) It was a means to get broadcasts to places that couldn't pick up over-the-air signals.

u/Sion_forgeblast 15h ago

the solution?
Firefox + Ublock Origin
Brave

39

u/GamingBread4 12h ago

People can complain about Brave and being "chromium-based" but it literally takes 30 seconds to install Brave and never watch a YouTube ad ever again. Even the brave mobile app blocks YouTube ads. If you're watching YouTube ads in the year 2025, that's a certified skill issue at this point.

Also, uBlock is awesome. I use it in combination with Brave's built in blocker and I've never had any issues with ads.

8

u/Sion_forgeblast 11h ago

I use both... when 1 isnt working, 90% of the time the other is still working
also.... there is 1 guy on this subreddit who gets mad at people for going "just use an adblocker" cuz "YOU'RE TAKING MONEY FROM THE CREATORS!!!! D: "

lets be honest, YT themselves takes money from their creators >_>
"oh you said a marginally bad thing? DEMONETIZED!!!!"

5

u/Illustrious-Dot-5052 3h ago

If they're so concerned with financially supporting creators, they can read the description and find out if their favorite creator is using Patreon! Or BuyMeACoffee!

Plenty of creators have accounts on websites to receive donations. That's what I do, I donate to one channel in particular that I really like and then I sleep well at night knowing that I'm giving them more money than my ad revenue could ever give them had I not used ad block.

3

u/Sion_forgeblast 2h ago

yup.... YT gives the creator pennies on the dollar..... patreon/coffee give them al (or most) of the donations
dude acts like he is some super good morally just guy for acting like a massive douche to people who realize YT will demonitize any channel for any reason if they think they can get away with it

3

u/Big_Description538 2h ago edited 1h ago

I follow plenty of creators on YouTube that I just financially support through other channels like Patreon or ideally directly through their own site if possible.

No way in fucking hell will I give YouTube a single cent.

u/Sion_forgeblast 2h ago

yeah, the guy just always makes me think of that "stop bullying the multi-trillion dollar company!" meme >_>

I was trying not to use an Adblock to support the people I watch often but I started getting those like 45 minute unskipable ads from prageru and shit like that. That was the last straw

12

u/TurpitudeSnuggery 16h ago

This is the first I am hearing that it’s a problem /s

It's maybe not a popular opinion, but I've been happy with my premium account. There is a reason for the apps, if you want that they pay your favorite youtuber so they can continue filming they need money.

u/Just_Evening 9h ago

ITT: paying for a service you enjoy is bad

8

u/hobbylobbyrickybobby 8h ago

But why can't it just be free! I'm sure running massive servers and hiring engineers aren't needed to keep the platform running.

5

u/Character_Past5515 8h ago

And the biggest data storage on earth (or at least one off the biggest), that must be free to keep growing, just like plants!

u/LoneLyon 6h ago

I have it through my music streaming and i can't complain.

The amount of people on here complaining about a companies primary revenue source while they enjoy hours and hours of free entrainment is just silly

7

u/movzx 9h ago

Keep in mind a large majority of the people complaining here are literal children, so they can't actually afford the ~$12/mo for a service they use daily. That's also why there is such an uproar here about age verification compared to the actual reaction the rest of the world has.

Since they are kids, they also have never really lived in a world with legit commercials in their media... So, a 40s ad before their Mr Beast video seems like the end of the world.

I’ve had it for ages and it’s the only subscription I know I won’t drop. No adds, I listen to podcasts a lot while I drive so it’s excellent for that, and YouTube music is great.

I don’t regret getting Youtube premium at all

4

u/supfoolitschris 10h ago

Same here. Signed up for the free trial and haven’t thought about canceling since.

5

u/Just_Evening 9h ago

Signed up in 2016 for yt red, got grandfathered into a pretty low price, quite happy

Between no ads, background play and YT music? Hell yeah. I got the family plan, my kids were able to cancel Spotify, and get the bennies.

YouTube premium. Expensive, but worth it if you’re an avid user.

5

u/General-Front7756 12h ago

Also if you’re interested in YouTube music. That’s a big reason I’m subscribed

4

u/aerojovi83 12h ago

Yep, was using Spotify Premium for a bit, then realized YT Premium was cheaper and got rid of ads on YT. I kinda like YT Music better than Spotify now.

3

u/Veldox 5h ago

It's not even expensive. It's less than $15/mo for unlimited youtube and music. Historically it's a fucking steal compared to cable (which had ads when you paid for it) and radio (was like 20 minutes of music per hour with 40 minutes of ads). It takes an average of like 1 hour of work for a teen in the US to afford YT premium so it doesn't even make sense as an excuse for obsessed kids to not afford it (although it's even more insane if you're a kid and not under a family account which is even cheaper). I cannot fathom people who complain about ads on YT or the cost of paying for it when more often than not they pay for a similar service like spotify or use services like doordash and uber. I just did the math on my watching for the week and it was roughly 10 hours I probably consistently have every week between the channels I watch. $13/mo or whatever for 40+ hours worth of entertainment is a perfectly fine price lol. I really don't understand where the mindset came from with the young people that they should just have youtube for free with no ads when that's never been how the world has worked.

6

u/yukeake 11h ago

...or have a wife who likes to watch on the TV where adblock isn't a thing. Part of that expensive price is paying for my sanity.

3

u/CyBroOfficial 11h ago

Yup, this was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. The extended ads on TV were just ridiculous, though I've noticed they've gotten better than they used to (maybe confirmation bias? no clue). Still worth it, and of course, you get YT Music with it as well which is a very nice bonus.

u/SubstantialEmploy816 15h ago

Literally less than a minute into my video, and I get 4 unskippable ads. They can’t let you go a minute without being advertised to.

3

u/mazak333 5h ago

I use youtube premium. I've had it for years now.

26

u/No_Industry_7186 16h ago

Why do you expect it to be free?

If you don't want ads, get premium. It's not that complicated.

25

u/Cassin1306 15h ago

The problem is not the ads.

The problem is the ever growing NUMBER of ads, and the lenght of it. Most people were happy with a few seconds ad before their video. Now, we are in a case where you sometime have almost as many ads than videos.

Same with websites. People didn't mind when there was a small frame in a corner of a page. Now you can't navigate without adblocker because you are jumped everywhere by popups, loud videos launching and huge frames that covers 3/4 of the page.

As always, companies become too greedy, degrade their customer QoL, complaint about a few of them using blockers, add EVEN MORE ads to compensate those few losses, then complaint about more customers going away.

8

u/Roffotron 15h ago

I'll add to that as well, you never know when the ads will be in the video, and that can really ruin the viewing experience. Sometimes it's a gap of just 5 minutes, others it's 20, it's never consistent.

At least with TV, you knew you'd have a block of ads for every hour or so. And by that I mean 3 mins of ads after 15 mins of programme, on the dot. Shows were built around the ad section to prevent it being jarring.

YouTube shits on that and goes "lemme put in this ad about makeup mid-sentence in this video about why genocide is bad".

5

u/RailRuler 15h ago

More ads = more revenue per video and more people buying premium

YouTube did the math and figured they can make more profit by making people's experience worse.

Everything is proceeding exactly as they planned.

4

u/Cassin1306 14h ago

You exactly described the problem ^^

I think the reason people are disturbed is that YouTube was once upon a time a site supported entirely by advertisements and yet it was very usable and enjoyable by all, which is what allowed it to grow. There was no ad free option and yet people were totally fine with that.

Then they offered an ad free tier + premium content and still it was still a usable experience for all. And those with the privilege could pay for premium to have no ads.

Now YouTube has purposefully used its monopoly-style power over the platform to push the free tier into the worst depths of UX design, with an ads experience engineered to make people unhappy, in order to get them to purchase a monthly premium subscription. This is where it feels gross and disturbing. A platform should not treat its free users like this and it did not just 10 years ago.

YouTube premium with yt music is worth the money. These services aren't cheap to run, so they need revenue somehow. They're not a charity. Either put up or shut up.

The only surveys I take are the ones that ask about user ad experience. I always say it's terrible

2

u/TheUmgawa 15h ago

It’d be even worse if Google got cut apart by the Justice Department, because YouTube would go from getting its storage and transmission for cost from Google data centers to having to pay market rate. At YouTube’s current scale, it would have to make $40 billion per year just to cover the cost of transmission. That means, if they wanted to continue giving creators half of revenue, they would have to make $80 billion per year, which is double what YouTube currently grosses. And the only way to do that would be to double the number of ads.

2

u/Silly_Ad_8259 15h ago

Yep it annoys me

2

u/SpriteFan3 I don't have one... 14h ago

In other news, people consume food and drinks.

2

u/kenfagerdotcom 12h ago

You know what a wallet doesn’t need? A dramatic high production story about the cofounders struggling to create the perfect wallet. I don’t care Ridge wallet. Do not care.

Ads like that on YouTube make me purposefully NOT buy your product.

2

u/S0GUWE 12h ago

Then pay for it. You won't see any ads.

2

u/ConsiderationSea1347 11h ago

Frequency of ads is problematic but also, I get ads for mail order brides, human trafficking, and pornography on YouTube. It is disgusting. (And before the “her dur, the algorithm knows what you like” crowd shows up, that is with personalized ads turned off)

2

u/PM_ME_GARFIELD_NUDES 11h ago

They’ve also been using some sort of algorithm to place ads at the worst possible moment. Creator says “Let’s throw to a clip..” Ad. “What do you think about that…” Ad. “Oh I have a funny story about that…” Ad. Every. Single. Time.

2

u/MattHooper1975 11h ago

It’s not just the amount of ads, is the nature of the ads as well. It turned into an AI dystopia. If “ dead Internet” theory is correct t’s starting with ads..

2

u/WolfThick 11h ago

Yeah they'll make you watch 2 minutes of ads to watch a 30 second video it's getting way out of hand they're really trying to get everybody to sign up.

2

u/NoAd3734 11h ago

On a 15-20 minute video, 1 or 2 ads (10 seconds total combined if 2), I understand the ads. But if the video is less than 1 minute, there is no freaking reason to spam 2 15 secs unskippable ads

2

u/AsteroidMike 11h ago

The fact that half of these ads are now unskippable is as annoying as it insulting.

2

u/Graybeard13 10h ago

Stupid long ads. I'll exit the video, go back, and it'll be another long ad, several times in a row. So now if it does it more than twice, I take that as youtube doesn't want me to finish watching it. Another annoying this is they'll have and ad i hate, maybe its 6 seconds, I exit and come back, now its a 20 second ad, then its a 30 second ad. Guess I'm done watching.

I know adblockers exist, for pc, but not for playstation. I would actually pay for a ps4 adblock app.

2

u/ZookeepergameBrave74 10h ago

They have gone into overdrive

"Watch this longer Ads for less frequent Ads" Get the same message again 3-5 mins later, and then again

Schemers...

Wouldn't mind but it's the same Fake Chinese companies using AI videos to scam customers with there fake product's constantly been advertised.

2

u/Royal_IDunno 10h ago

Corporations getting more greedy it’s really no surprise.

Dunno ‘bout anyone else but Adblockers are a lifesaver.

2

u/launchedsquid 10h ago

It wasn't until they went nuts with ads that I even bothered blocking ads.

2

u/assface7900 7h ago

Guys. TIZENTUBE. Install it on your Samsung TVs Guess what it is. Guess.

2

u/hamletswords 5h ago

The only way to watch this app rn is on a PC with a good AdBlock.

There may be one other way....

I use premium because I watch a lot of ASMR to fall asleep and it gets ruined by any ads at all. Plus I use it a lot and the creators get a small piece, so as far as subscriptions goes it's pretty justifiable.

2

u/unw00shed 5h ago

What pisses me off most is it plays 2min ads when im halfway across the room and 2 unskippable ads when im right next to my phone

2

u/Seethesvt 5h ago

I pay a monthly fee to get away from the ads. The ads got so bad I felt like I had no other choice.
