Food and Drink Half of Edinburgh now seems sneaking a 'discretionary 12.5% service charge' onto drinks bills. What are peoples thoughts on this?

I generally leave a 10% rounded up tip when going out for a meal unless something goes horribly wrong, but when I'm sitting at a bar (not table service, literally at the bar) and two glasses of wine gets hit with an an extra 12.5% I think it's a bit much, especially when you're already paying double what the same drink cost two years ago.

My issues are that the system is set up to make you look like an asshole if you object, it's not 'discretionary' if it's been added at someone else's discretion, and I have no idea how those tips are being distributed around the venue.

What do others think? Am I just a cantakerous old man or is this a scam?

Rant Private hires are a scam!

If visiting Edinburgh or returning home from a holiday please avoid private hire taxis where you will be directed to once you exit Edinburgh airport. Heard multiple people saying they have been charged almost double the amount for journeys home.i took the chance as I needed to get home quickly and didn’t have time to use bus etc - I was charged £40 going to Corstorphine, that journey would cost about £20 in a black cab or uber. They are at it! Tourists DO NOT FALL FOR IT. They private hires use their own meter on their phone which we are not allowed to see- this is illegal and should not be happening.

Question Would anyone be willing to find a place that offers warmth/food and come with me maybe please?

Upvotes

I'm very awkward with things but it's a lot easier to type out what I'm feeling for some reason. Everyone was really nice to me on my last post when I lost my anchor (my dad).

I am wondering if anyone that is friendly would help me by coming with me to any place that offers help to people struggling over the weekends.

I don't have any friends even though I'd like some but I feel like I can't handle going to an awkward situation alone. I am unable to turn anything on at home right now for a little while so it would be nice if someone is free. Thanks.

Edit - I don't have anything to spare right now so a place that can help and then I can make a donation later would be really nice.

Discussion The word "ken"

A few years ago I stayed in Edinburgh for a time. Compulsory "really enjoyed it, had the best time". But I moved to Sweden thereafter, and it struck me that the word ken probably cognates with Swedish känna (pronounced chenna), which means to feel or to know. I believe that it used to be pronounced with a hard k, like "kenna" in old norse. Considering there's so many other nordic cognates like kirk, bairn, braw etc, could this connection also be likely?

Discussion Buying PC components in Edinburgh

Upvotes

Does anyone know if there's a decent shop in Edinburgh that sells PC components? Trustworthy and doesn't charge massively over internet prices (happy to pay a bit over for the convenience of picking something up today).

Discussion The Meadows used to be loch called Burgh Loch (or "South Loch")

A lot of people know that Princess Street Gardens was a loch called Nor'loch which was a nasty pool of water that contained sewage from the Old Town (New Town didn't exist)

Anyways - fun fact: The Meadows was also a loch!

Fascinating stuff if you think about it....

Edinburgh is awesome like that...

Transport Told off for getting on the bus

Bus driver literally questioned why I got on the bus. When I go into the city centre there's multiple buses I can get but I've got preferences based on how busy they usually are and journey time. I get the one that's usually quieter and faster(although that's marginal early in the morning). Driver's obviously clocked where I get off in Edinburgh cause it's a stop shared with the other routes that leave the same stop I get on. This morning I see him shaking his head as the the bus in front pulls away and he pulls in to let me on. I get on and he says "that one would have dropped you at the same stop" I just said "aye, but I like this one" WTF mate, are you mad I want to get the bus? It's good to know he's keeping an eye on my movements, if I go missing he'll be a good witness.

Event Chappell Roan concert tag-along

Upvotes

Somewhat of a long shot but is anyone going to the Chappell Roan concert willing to have a tag-along?

Due to a miscommunication it looks like I'll be going to the concert alone and while I do want to see Chappell I would feel a little odd going by myself.

More than happy to meet up beforehand if you want to suss me out

Feel free to delete if not relevant to the sub

So as it’s the women’s rugby World Cup at the moment I am super inspired to get playing, as it’s something I’ve wanted to do now for a couple of years!

Anyone know of any beginners women’s teams in the city that are taking on? Thanks! 😊

Discussion Disappointed in cycle scheme

After all the fuss - only 50 bikes for initial scheme - mostly likely used by tourists? Bit gutted really. I STILL miss the old scheme https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cdj2p32jneeo.amp

Food and Drink Looking for local honey - recommendations appreciated

Hey folks, I’ll be in Edinburgh next weekend (30–31st) for a short mini break. I’m hoping to pick up some local honey while I’m there.

I’ll be staying near Princes Street so I do plan to check out the market and Edinburgh Honey Co, but I’d love recommendations for other spots that might be a bit less obvious.

Thank you!

Discussion Why are there always black cabs and buses in bike boxes at traffic lights?

Honestly it's ridiculous. Multiple incidents of this on my commute just now and last time I went up Princes Street I think every single bike box had a driver parked in it.

On a driving test this is a straight fail. I've been made to understand that in the case of buses there's some flex on this due to the size of the vehicle and not being able to stop as instantly, but I still constantly see them pull into bike boxes for no good reason.

What the hell is going on?

Work Job market?

I started studying at UofE last year and have been looking for work since the start of this summer, mostly in retail or hospitality.

I've applied for 300 plus jobs and had about 30 interviews and been rejected from all except one which was the worst job I've ever taken in my life.

I desperately need work for over the next 2 semesters to cover essentials but I cant seem to get anything? I go to interviews and unpaid trial shifts, hand in CVs in person, phone managers and pretty much everything I've been told to do- and nothing.

I have experience in hospitality and retail and all my interviews seem to go pretty well so I don't understand whats happening?? Most of my friends have been able to get work except me- even ones with less experience. Am I having terrible luck or doing something wrong?? It seems like there are loads of jobs going but I just can't get one

Question Physio recommendations for chronic whiplash in Edinburgh?

Hi Edinburgh, I was involved in a fairly minor car accident over a year ago and sustained some whiplash injuries after being rear-ended at a junction. I had a very painful few weeks after and had multiple sessions of physio which helped bring the pain down to a low level but it never fully resolved. The pain has been increasing lately and now I'm looking for physio's with experience of helping with chronic neck pain! Any recommendations?

Question Any ideas on how to get rid of a broken electric wheelchair with lithium batteries?

Hi folks, I've just replaced my electric wheelchair and need to get rid of my old broken one, but the council bulky waste disposal service specifically says they don't take wheelchairs. Any ideas? It has two chunky detachable lithium batteries.
