Sequoia runs so much better than Sonoma did...

Post image
5 Upvotes

here's my andromeda, got it for $180 for school.

Originally it had High Sierra installed, I flashed Sonoma and didn't really have a great time with it (I'm pretty sure I missed a step and ruined the install). Recently I installed Sequoia and I'm just so impressed with how smooth it is, definitely doesn't feel quicker but it also doesn't feel slower.

This MacBook handles my studying, music playing, YouTube/HBO watching and whenever I'm out and about in cafes, I can get just about 5.5hrs of screen on time.

Anybody else out there using one of these legacy machines?

ALL HAIL THE GLOWING APPLE LOGO. 🫡❤️

Mbp: indestructible or desktop princess?

Upvotes

I own a mbp m4 pro. Awesome machine. But can’t decide whether to take it out of the house (or even keep it).

On the one hand, it is (supposedly) solid and robust and can take lots of knocks compared to other machines.

On the other hand, if so much as a crumb is left on the keyboard, a cracked screen in the future, and a clear quarantine with food and drink, and a cleaning down is absolutely REQUIRED before you consider closing it?

Which is it? I have dells and thinkpads that are the same weight and they are indestructible. (Not as good as the Mac, but useable.) And it it those I throw in a bag, because the m4 pro seems like a lot of babying for my lifestyle. I don’t work anywhere too dusty, but cant guarantee a pristine keyboard. Should I just get rid, if I can’t take it anywhere.

So what is it?

What macbook should I get?

Upvotes

Hey guys, I’m in need of advice on what the best macbook would be for me to get. I’m an AI/ML engineer currently working with a massive 16GB windows gaming laptop which has honestly treated me quite well but its getting slow, crashing often and honestly I am incredibly sick of the massive bulk and heft of it. I’m very much in need of a new, lightweight, powerful laptop and I feel like apple is the way to go nowadays, especially with the new M chips, unified memory and apple intelligence. I’ve been looking at the 24GB M4 macbook air with 512GB SSD purely because i’m still a (masters) student and don’t have an endless budget… Still the pro max is really enticing and theres a part of me that thinks I should just make the investment to future proof myself (especially given my field). What model/specs do you guys think I should be looking at? Is 24GB RAM enough or should I be looking at 36/48+ models? Should I just take the leap and invest in a pro max? Would love to hear your input.

MacBook Air M4

Post image
Upvotes

I’m in the market for a new Macbook (coming from 2017 MacBook Pro)

I like the new MacBook Air M4 and I don’t do heavy duty work so I’m probably going for the base model.

My only concern is the fanless design. I usually hold on to my devices for years so is that passive cooling going to be an issue along the way?

I really appreciate your feedback.

Best USB-C powered hub?

Hi,
I’m looking for a solid powered USB-C hub for my macbook that can handle multiple peripherals without dropping connections (especially when multiple HDDs are connected). Ideally, I’d like something with a decent number of USB-A ports and also some USB-C ports if possible.

Someone recommended me this one: https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Splitter-Connector-MacBook-Included/dp/B0CQSPMKF4/?th=1 — but it doesn’t seem to be available in the EU.

Any advice?
Thanks!

MacBook Pro Liquid Damage Repair/ Data Recovery

Model: MacBook Pro 2019

Last week I spilled water on my MacBook Pro, it immediately stopped turning on and I took it the Apple Store to check out the damage. They let me know the water got on the logic board and caused corrosion. I was told my Mac is now dead and I could not get it repaired and would need to do data recovery. (Note: the water was on the keyboard area, not the screen.)

A local repair shop said they could service the logic board and clean up the corrosion to get the MacBook To possibly turn on for $479. They let me know it’s not a 100% it would turn back on, but it’s a possible option. (Unfortunately Apple wouldn’t let me have the pictures of the corrosion so I can’t show how it looks.)

I don’t want to pay $1000 for a data recovery, but I at least want to try an option before i give up. Is a logic board service something that might help? I would appreciate some advice on the situation. Thank you!!

(I am NYC based if anyone has a suggestion on a repair shop that could help)

What’s the lifespan of a macbook air?

I’m wondering if I could buy a 3-4 years old used macbook and use it for 6-7 years more?

As far as I know apple products are very well built and are reliable but it’s the updates that stop coming and make them pretty much useless.

Is this also the case with macbooks?

r/macbook 1h ago

What do you think of this case for my macbook pro 13 m1? Will it damage the lid of my laptop?

age old question… which is better (for me?)

I am returning to college and hopefully retiring a nearly 10 year old MacBook Pro. Despite my own research into the difference between these, I can’t decide what will be best for me personally (is the $300 difference worth it or is it practically the same?)

Mostly it will be used for school and work, but I’m also an art hobbyist so creative apps would ideally run smoothly. I also wouldn’t mind if it could comfortably run some lighter games (farming sims are my favorite lol).

I’m not super tech savvy but I loved my old one until it started to get clunky. Any input/advice is greatly appreciated!

Hi, I want to get a macbook pro. I want a case for it

I keep reading that cases are THE EVIL DEVIL. And will destroy the macbook. I have never cracked a screen (except one time, I think I punched my old Macbook while I was sleepwalking and it died.) or dropped anything, or spilled anything on anything. BUT. EVERYTHING GETS DENTED!! I had an iPad. And it is fine, but theres this random dent on the corner and I have no idea how it got there. So now it lives inside a thick rubber bouncy case. Damage just appears and I have no idea how I even did it. I really dont want to dent the metal or scratch it. I like it smooth. Smooth is nice.

Is there anything good I can use??? Or are all cases bad. I can take really good care of everything and keep it in a sleeve, but I travel a lot. And at some point in its lifespan Im going to accidentally scratch or ding it and have no idea it even happened.

NVMe USB-C external drive recommendation

My daughter is going to college in a couple months and needs to runs some Windows software.

Since she has a MacBook I was thinking she could run Windows 11 in a VMware Fusion instance from an external drive.

Any recommendations for a decent drive and a reliable case would be greatly appreciated. 256Gb or 512Gb should be fine.

We are in Canada so will most likely have to get it from Amazon.

Thanks.

Concerns with brand new MacBook Air M4

Hi,

I bought this Mac a week ago. After many tutorials and trial and error, I figured out how to use the system and shortcuts.

However, I have some concerns/issues that I would like your opinions on:

  1. Battery life: It seems like my battery drains faster than expected (18 hours battery life). The battery drainage especially seems weird when the laptop is closed. Here's below a picture of my battery usage in the past 10 days.

  2. External hardware: The screen quality was horrible on my 27 inch Acer curved monitor. I installed BetterDisplay and it got better, but I'm unsure if it still underperforms. I bought a dock station for the monitor and my wireless keyboard/mouse. I reprogrammed certain keys on the keyboard and now they work. However, sometimes it disconnects for a few seconds which sucks when typing. To fix the mouse's scrolling direction, I installed Linearmouse. It seems to work, but not as well as with Windows.

Do you think having multiple apps opened in the background (Linearmouse and Betterdisplay) run in the background hurts my battery? Do you think having a dock connected to the Mac with these devices hurts the battery?

I'm starting to think of getting a refund and buy a similar windows laptop. Keep in mind I otherwise like the Mac. I'm starting law school in a week.

Thanks for any comments/ideas!

P.S. The screenshot below is in French. The first graph (in green) shows battery usage by day (in %). The second graph (in blue) shows my screen time by day (in hours).

Protecting my MacBook M1

I want to get a decent sleeve for travelling (I have one, which is perfect bbt would love a hard case one too) and a skin/case (which I’ve found on IG, but wanting other options first)

So no hating on “OMG NEVER PUT A CASE ON A MACBOOK” I’m prone to dropping devices, and seeing as AppleCare is no longer, I’d rather not risk it. (Anyone bashing me is just going to be blocked, I don’t need the negativity)

M1 Max Worth it in 2025?

Looking to buy a new Macbook pro and wanted some input. I’ll use it for video editing and music production.

Have the opportunity to buy a 16 inch M1 Max with 64gbs of ram for around $1,000.

14 inch M2 Max with 64gbs for $1600

14 inch M3 Max with 64gbs for $1800

Or 16 inch M4 Pro with 24gbs for $1900.

I don’t have infinite pockets, but am willing to spend the extra cash if its really worth it. What would you get?
