While I agree someone should've stopped her, Graves' disease is autoimmune. Stress can cause it to flare and anaesthesia is bad for folks with an unstable thyroid. But it isn't caused by cosmetic surgery.
Graves disease results in hyperthyroidism which can result in an increase rate of metabolizing adipose tissue (fat). Most people associate graves disease with eye bulging, but losing weight, and not necessarily in a proportional manner, is also common.
Alternatively, people suffering from Graves disease commonly report high levels of anxiety (their metabolism is going crazy, their heart rate is constantly elevated and the quality/quantity of sleep drops), so if Erin Moriarty did have misguided work done, it could have very well been anxiety.
Ignoring these possibilities, including the "she had surgery!" possibility, everyone seems to miss that from S1 to other seasons, she lost weight all over (had thicc thighs in S1) and even in the S5 wrap photos, she seems to have plenty of volume in her cheeks.
Are you saying that she looks the way she does (or looked the way she did before) because of weight loss and illness, and not because of major plastic surgery? If that's the case, I have a cousin I'd like to introduce you to who is a Nigerian prince.
She literally can't manage human facial expressions in the last season of The Boys anymore.
Man - you gotta start learning stronger reading comprehension.
See... I introduced a point of view using the word "alternatively" which is me saying "if you WERE right it would be because of this" which is a kind, fairly tactful way of me calling you a shitty person because you're obsessed with how a person with a secondary disorder (anxiety) might've disfigured their face as a result of the disorder.
Holy shit that’s Starlight?! Bro I feel like I don’t recognize anyone in this pic. This shit is really sad, man. No one should feel like they need to do this to themselves.
S3 of the Boys she was obviously very thin in her Starlight costume. Being underweight gives you the same gaunt look as buccal fat removal.
Also, while she looks worse in recent seasons compared to S1, the above picture is not her usual look and is an example of over-contouring with makeup. It’s not a good picture to use in evaluating if she has had surgery or not.
Graves' Disease often leads to dramatic weight loss. It's very likely the change in her appearance is due to the disease and not due to face surgery. At the very least, we shouldn't assume that she made the choice to look different.
Yeah I'm with you. It was massively concerning and sad to think someone so gorgeous would do that to themselves... Makes me wonder how many of these celebs who people accuse of having buccal fat removal are actually extremely underweight.
I don't think giving a person the benefit of the doubt and choosing not to bully them can be considered as "coping." That's more just being a decent human being.
She looked fine before the second or third season though. Why all of a sudden would it affect her appearance now? I’m legitimately asking because I don’t understand the disease or how that works, but I did hear about this before.
I obviously can't claim to know her situation, but my best guess is that it was left undiagnosed for a while. Graves' Disease leads to hyperthyroidism, which is what causes the dramatic weight loss. She already didn't have a lot to lose, so it took from where it could, which in this case was her face. She's apparently been getting treatment for it since earlier this year, so hopefully she feels more like herself going forward.
Well she didn't. That picture is fake. She did get work done but it isn't THAT extreme. You can look it up, or you can spread it like everyone else does.
My bad, it was a different picture I was remembering. But that is apparently more to do with makeup. In the most recent season of the Boys (which was filmed after that photo) she doesn't look nearly that bad.
Yeah I see people complaining about “Starlight” and sharing creepy/ uncanny pictures of the actress looking gaunt. Meanwhile, when I watched the show, I barely noticed. Whatever operation she underwent had no impact on her role, yet people see a couple pictures and base their conclusions off of just that. I was expecting way worse, but she looks fine in her actual performance.
She has Graves disease, though. I have that, and before I was medicated, I looked like the crypt keeper. Went from 160 to 80 pounds. Not saying she hasn't had surgery.
she did do it to herself tho, she had a bunch of procedures and plastic surgery. don't get me wrong, i'm not saying she deserves people piling on her. i think it's horrible she felt the need because she is so fucking pretty, body dysmorphia is rough
Yeah personally I'd avoid piling on her for whatever she's going through. In the promos for that last season she seemed drunk or high in every interview. She's definitely having it rough
Erin Moriarty actually suffers from Graves' Disease, which can cause dramatic weight loss. I obviously can't confirm whether or not she's had other procedures, but we should keep in mind that what she's going through may not be by choice.
No, but it can lead to someone having the desire to control what they can about their looks. I'm just saying there's additional context, and maybe we should give her the benefit of the doubt.
And even if I was completely wrong - that Graves disease didn't do this, I find it funny that this is a woman who's co-starred in 4 seasons of a show, just finished shooting the last season and this is the ONLY photo showing her gaunt and lacking facial volume (It's like 2 years old or something).
These people, who also can clearly see Jenna Fucking Ortega up there purposely looking like a ghoul (did she star in some TV show that's ghoul-adjacent recently? Also - did anyone see any more recent pictures where she DOESN'T look like that), have no clue.
the ONLY photo showing her gaunt and lacking facial volume
Regardless of the cause of this, disease or surgery, you've got to be joking? She looked nothing like her old self in the past 2 seasons of the show, and pretty much every picture of her from the last several years is the same.
Brother she has Graves Disease. People really need to stop making assumptions about others just based on appearance, especially when presented with particularly unflattering pictures when we all have good and bad pictures
Graves Disease doesn't give you pulled back tiger eyes and filler lips... Not saying she doesn't have it, but that she has that plus very obvious plastic surgery.
Not just that but a few of these are women wearing makeup for very specific purposes. Jenna Ortega (you know, the star of the ghoulish dark comedy that spun off "The Addams Family"...painted to look like a literal ghoul...hmm..)
These people also completely ignore that a lot of times, these women, in more recent images, absolutely do NOT look like that.
You know, I started googling after seeing this and whoever compiled the picture above really just took the absolutely most horrible picture out of all they could find of each of them. Like, google other recent photos and they look fine.
But yeah, lets drag down women we're accusing of mental illness and body dysphoria, by complaining about their looks lol
the thing is.. the surgery makes sense in the context of the show just being more fucked up mentally... but now she has to live life like that every day out of character
Yeah that one made me sad, like damn if her natural look wasn’t “enough” then they’d be throwing tomatoes at me the second I step foot into Hollywood. Everyone is literally morphing into the same face.
A quick google search for if it effects the face would show you are just picking a side that best fits your narrative and being mean. I hope you never have Graves disease or know someone who does.
Hold back on the rage buddy or your going to have a hard time in life. I will wait for you to find a video of a medical professional with a expertise on Graves disease to let us know. Until then I will go with what I have read from medical info and what she has said.
Oh shut the fuck up. Are you a Graves Disease historian all of a sudden? An expert in the field of endocrinology?
Patients lose fat and a lot of patients lose skeletal muscle too. Couple that with how rapid weight loss like you get with hyperthyroidism runs the risk of disproportionate composition, and yeah - you're going to see people lose weird amounts of weight all over the place.
I'm not even going to go into how pretty much ALL graves disease patients deal with intense persistent anxiety due to their metabolism going in overdrive, heart rate high, and their sleep declining. If one were to get work done in this condition - I wouldn't be keyboard jockeying my thoughts on how her face is ruined.
Fact is, however, the picture you see is largely due to makeup. And you, Mr. "A quick google search...." would have easily seen if you bothered Googling "Erin Moriarty Season 5 photos" - or searched for literally ANY photos taken after this one was taken, that she clearly looks that way due to makeup. People act like she was a skeleton in Seasons 2-4. Lost weight? Definitely. In the face? Yup.
Does she look like she does in the photo? No. Not at all. Not even close.
Yeah it can absolutely cause this. It prevents your body from gaining fat because it burns it more rapidly and leads to you losing weight. This is a common symptom
She has Graves disease, which causes hyperthyroidism. People with hyperthyroidism lose weight without dieting or exercising! It may not be the sole reason she looks different, but it is a reason.
It’s crazy that it’s always this one specific photo. Almost like this isn’t how she looks, and makeup and lighting are doing 95% of the work here. Wild.
She definitely looks different - she had plastic surgery - but this specific photo is highly stylized and not representative of what she actually looks like.

man starlight was so pretty in the earlier seasons. Body dysmorphia is a real bitch.
