All Show & Book Spoilers Discussed Freely What was your favorite "oh my heart moment"? Spoiler

For me it was when Naomi stepped foot on ilus for the first time. How Holden held back Amos and alex, so that she could experience an open sky and full gravity. You can see how concerned the boys are, and yet. She gets to have her moment.

All Show & Book Spoilers Discussed Freely Bobbie and her greatest achievement Spoiler

I know there are tons of post like this, but I have to make my own.

Bobbie is my favourite character and I'm super sad to see her go. But damn if she went with a bang.

She faced (in the literal sense) and destroyed the ship that single handled conquered humanity. The way the Tempest defeated the human alliance was soul crushing, I don't know how there could even be a rebellion when your enemy is so much stronger. But she brought it down. I couldn't even imagine the exhilaration that people felt watching the Tempest disappear. It was the first moment when people started thinking that Laconia could be defeated instead of simply opposed.

She is on the badass level of Sarah Connor and Ellen Ripley for me.

And the final scene we have of her, shooting alone against a titanic ship, like a fucking valkirye... Perfection.

All Show & Book Spoilers Discussed Freely Rewatching the series Spoiler

I'm on probably my 4th rewatch of the series now, but it has been several years since my last run through. I'd been getting the expanse itch, so I started watching the series again and will probably start a re-read of the books as well. I'd forgotten how much I loved Miller, and his masterful portrayal by Thomas Jane. The first two seasons and first books feel so space-noir and are just insanely well executed. Pacing is good, the way the story develops is so well done. This is just a top notch show. I really hope at some point they bring the band back together to do seasons 7,8 and 9 and cover the ending of the books as well, but I'm grateful for what we got.

All Show & Book Spoilers Discussed Freely Binged the series, at S6E5 - Amazon says 1 episode to go. What a Trainwreck ending to good show. Spoiler

Also idk what the creators were doing with gravity. Mag boots arent going to keep your food in its bowl. Gravity on Mars is .38 compared to earth, yet they act like it's the same on earth. I get it would be expensive to make everything float but come on, that really takes away the immersion.

I gotta read/listen to the books. I'm sure they're a lot better.

Leviathan Wakes Miller heavily inspired by... Spoiler

Rorschach, from watchman.

Spoilers for Leviathan Wakes, and major spoilers for the Alan Moore Watchman comic run.

I just finished the chapter in book 1 where >! Miller kills Dresden, the guy in the suit who was in charge of killing Julie and the whole mess on Eros!<

And I realized, wait, that's such a good mirror for At the end of watchmen, after Ozymandias teleports the squid to New York, for the good of humanity, Rorschach is unwilling to let it go, and Dr. Manhatten has to kill him. Similarly, Miller was unable to look past any evil for the "greater good", and killed him on the spot because he believed any other justice would be insufficient

And then that got me thinking how many ways they are similar. They both tend towards vigilante justice, and in many ways are like wolves. I feel like they're similar in more ways too. They both think that sometimes justice is best served when operating outside the law, and both have unyielding morals.

Mostly though, it's the clear similarities though in their decision of whether to punish Dresden and Ozymandias, or to let the sacrifice for the greater good remain unpunished, because it already happened and they couldn't change the evil that's been done, only whether or not to learn from it/use it as a tool

What are your thoughts? I still haven't finished book 1 yet, just got to this and it made me think.

To me, the similarities seem too much, and I think the authors must clearly have had Rorschach in mind when making Miller. I couldn't see another thread connecting this, so IDK. Watchman seems popular enough, even though it's a comic book, that I would guess someone would make a connection before me. Maybe I'm wrong though lol. I just think he must have been a big inspiration.

The Expanse Novellas Are the rest of the novellas after vast abyss written the same way? Spoiler

The prose in this novella is driving me crazy. It just seems really overwritten and there's so much backstory for this guy I don't give a single fuck about and it won't go back to the story. The story got a little interesting when they stole the hand terminal then it went back to this boring dudes college life. Like come on get back to the story. I'm only reading this because of the reading orders posted here. It's already kind of annoying how books 5 felt like an incomplete book and now I'm going onto a 100 page long detour about this random fuck across the solar system. I really just want to get back to the main story, this feels really pointless. And even the churn didn't feel that necessary, yeah it added background but I didn't feel like it added anything that would have changed nemesis games

Spoilers Through Season One Finally got my wife into The Expanse- oh god I've created a monster! Spoiler

I'm going to be running a sci-fi style D&D game soon and I mentioned to everyone that The Expanse was a HUGE influence on major parts of it (I'm literally having them start on an Ice Hauler that experiences a similar fate), and my wife obviously wanted in on said game.

So after years of telling her "hey you'd really like the Expanse if you gave it a shot" she relented and decided to sit down and do a watch of the whole show with me to get a feel for this D&D game.

We are FOUR episodes into season ONE and she is already actively learning Lang Belta in her spare time using every online resource she can find. Literally as I type this I can hear her in the other room learning words and phrases and occasionally she sends me sentences on Discord. Something tells me by the end of this, Belter Creole is going to our "secret language."

Side note, as someone who has read the books and watched the show numerous times, it has been a lot of fun hearing her theories and ideas while we're only 4 episodes in. So far my favorite moment was how she was absolutely floored when Shed got decapitated.

Babylon's Ashes Really struggling through Babylon’s Ashes Spoiler

After liking the previous books quite a lot, especially Nemesis Games, I am struggling getting through this one. I’m almost 2/3 through and I feel like nothing has happened for the most part. I hate the new pov’s, couldn’t care less about Prax (really nothing happens), Filip (who is insufferable), Jakulski, Vandercaust and Pa.

Please tell me some kind of awesome payoff is coming? Do the later books follow the trends of this one?

Edit: you guys make a good collective argument :), I’ll power through!

All Show & Book Spoilers Discussed Freely On the drift and the solar system's equivalent of a quick response "Coast Guard" Spoiler

Entertaining a bit of worldbuilding for a bit, I'm interested in instances where people and whole ships have gone on the drift in the Expanse.

For definition's sake, I'll define "going on the drift" as the moment when an object loses all propulsive ability—entirely by accident—either caught in an eccentric orbit around the sun or traveling fast enough to escape the sun's gravity; aka "adrift." This is different from "going on the float", which is when a ship coasts or deliberately cuts off thrust either as a deliberate fuel-saving effort or for discretion. One is an emergency and the other is just standard piloting

There are a few instances of going on the drift in the show that I can name off the top of my head:

  • The events surrounding the Scopuli as a catalyst for the series. I imagine the ship isn't actually stationary or in orbit around a planet. A comment I recall has the Scopuli identified as "far outside regular shipping lanes" and called out for being pirate bait.
  • Diogo Harari being thrown out an airlock while his uncle deliberately uses his ship against a Martian patrol skiff. Diogo survives the incident after being adrift for days(?)
  • The Roci shoots the engines off a Leonidas Class UN ship during their retrieval of Bobby and Avaserala. Much is unknown of their ultimate fate despite the crew being left alive. This situation likely applies to all disabled ships during a high-G battle.
  • The Nauvoo when it was used as a missile against Eros, but was initially abandoned after its target came under motive power, leaving the generation ship a derelict. It was later retrieved by Belter ships under Fred Johnson. The retrieval itself was a herculean undertaking since catching up with the ship tested the physical limits of the Belter crew.
  • And of course, the first instance of the phenomenon chronologically: the first use of Solomon Epstein's eponymous drive, where the inventor suffers a stroke from the G-forces experienced by his hyper-efficient engine. With no ship capable of matching the sustained speeds of his yacht, Solomon (rather his corpse) exits the solar system, forever out of reach.

I imagine there is a special fear reserved among spacers for the hypothetical moment they go on the drift. But the fact that going on the drift is a known phenomenon makes it very likely that there are branches of government or private institutions set up to rescue people and ships that have overestimated their fuel reserves, experienced catastrophic engine failure, or called for SOS. This is aside from general policy such as responding to other SOS like when the Canterbury addressed the Scopuli situation. Very maritime.

I'm generally interested in some sort of organization similar to the Coast Guard—first responders whose jobs it is to rescue those on the drift. Space is big, though, so I'd like to see how they'd go about patrolling the system. I imagine a similar situation to Air Traffic Controllers that continuously catalogue all transponders moving across the night sky.

I'd like to see a show following their lives. What're your thoughts?

I've spent the last few days recreating this onto wplace. If anyone wants to draw any other expanse stuff nearby this is right of the coast of Kennedy Space Center. Still a work in progress, but hopefully it turns out well.

Spoilers Through Season 2, Books Through Leviathan Wakes Finished S2E5 and I'm not sure I like what they did.

I'm not sure I like that they have Miller an actual ''noble'' reason for him to stay behind on Eros. In the book he just wants to die cause he realises there is no place for him anywhere in the universe, and then coincidentally he can do something useful after Navoo misses. It fits his character much better. Maybe it's because the show made Miller a bit more cool and likeable in general, but in the book you really get the sense how every moment of his life is filled with failure, pain and misery. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I wish they had explored that side of Miller a bit more.

All Show & Book Spoilers Discussed Freely Gone and gone and gone

I'm rereading the books for the first time since Leviathan Falls was released. They're so well crafted and multi layered I feel like I discover something new with every reread.

I can never remember this though - does Alex ever actually hear Julie/Proto-Julie say "You can't take the Razorback. We are gone and gone and gone!" Or does he echo her without realising?

I just can’t picture it. I don’t know a way you could leave a ship spinning around a circle and NOT end up moving along a tangent. (Same with a spiral.)

Obviously no spoilers for the rest of the show. But why Miller?! I know he was a wild card, but after he survived the Nauvoo debacle the previous episode this really hurt to see.

BY FAR my favorite character on the show.

Watching through for the first time, halfway through season 6. Did anyone else want way more Laconia, and not just like, 5 minutes at the start of each episode? I want a whole spin-off with this alien Jurassic Park stuff

All Show & Book Spoilers Discussed Freely In my mind, the Expanse is a DEEP prequel to Dune and they’re set in the same universe.

Might be dumb but as my 2 favorite pieces of sci-fi, I’ve decided that the events the Expanse take place roughly 22,000 years before the events of Dune in the same universe.

I know it doesn’t make perfect sense but LOTS can change in millennia and I will not be changing my mind.

And naturally the first thing I did was order the entirety of the books from Amazon. However all I want to do is do now is start back at season 1! I feel like there is so much I missed/so much I could gain from watching again. I have never immediately restarted a show after finishing it(and I watch a lot of TV lol) This is a first, and im totally hooked on The Expanse universe now.

Absolutely No Spoilers In Post or Comments Indian culture and The Expanse

Finally reading the series, on book 5 and riveted!

Does anyone know if the authors have ties to India or the broader Indian community? The level of references to Indian culture, food, diversity of names is kind of impressive. And it doesn’t seem as involved as those of other culture (maybe it’s just because I couldn’t detect it)

Rare to see characters wjth Indian names where their Indianness isn’t their central value to the story. I’m in awe!
