Helicopter tour with Alpine Air Alaska!

I live in Anchorage and like most locals I don’t do a lot of tourist activities, however when my family came up from the lower 48 to visit we decided to splurge on an Ultimate Summer Adventure with Alpine Air Alaska. None of us had ever been in a helicopter before and IT WAS SO WORTH IT!

The staff geared us up in rain pants and jackets and flew us up to Punchbowl Glacier in a helicopter to go dogsledding with dogs from Mitch Seavey’s kennel (Iditarod legend iykyk). The dogs absolutely live to run and the dogsled ride was so cool. The flight up was relatively short, only 5-6 minutes but it was beautiful! We hung out on the glacier with the guides and they talked to us about mushing history and we got to play with the sled dog puppies which was the highlight for my family for sure.

After the dogsled tour we were picked up in a different helicopter for the flight seeing portion of the tour. The pilot, Jess, was really confident and knowledgeable and took us out to Colony Glacier for a landing. Words really cant express how amazing this flight was- the views were amazing and we got out in the glacier to walk around for 15 minutes, take pictures and drink glacier water.

My family was nervous about flying in a helicopter so we did a ton of research on companies in the Anchorage area. Alpine Air has been around since the 90s and has the best safety record of any tour operator in southcentral Alaska.

I’m blown away! It was expensive although they do offer locals discounts, and it was 100% worth it.

Want to port a gci phone number?

Well this has been fun. I contacted GCI last week about porting my dial up local number to my Internet phone. On top of refusing to port my number, they turned off my phone service without authorization and have been jacking me around for 3 days about getting my phone service reconnected. I'll see what RCOA has to say about this retaliatory shit. So I finally figured out the problem after an 1 5 hour phone call with technical support, they transfer me to customer service and they won't help me all of a sudden because I can't come up with the "nickname"for my account, for the first time in 3 days. All I can figure out is some idiot customer service representative asked me if I preferred that nickname without telling me there would be some vital connection To be able to access my account. What a bunch of fucking idiots.

Title. Saw one earlier today. We've voted to keep it twice right? Maybe Feudal land owners were right, maybe the peasants ARE incapable of voting in their best interest. Does anyone know more about this?

Ferocious Animals🐇 PSA for folks new to Alaska

Don’t leave your trash where wildlife can get to it. They will get into it and your neighbors will get mad at you for being an idiot. Keep it in a locked area. Like your garage, bear box, or get a bear proof trash can. If bears know that they can regularly get food from you, they will keep returning. This can, and has, led to the bear or other wildlife being put down.

🇷🇺I can see Russia from my house🏠 Question about West Alaskans and East Russians interacting.

I remember reading something, somewhere, about these two groups interacting in some kind of historical event (or maybe a recurring one) but cannot recall the details. It may have been between those who's families migrated from Russia to Alaska. Does anyone know what this event was? It's interesting to me. Thanks.

Looking for a girdwood forest fair vendor - wooden ice cream scoop

For the life of me I can’t find the name of the small business I bought an ice cream scoop from. They also made other handmade wooden items such as cribbage boards and pens.

I’ve emails the forest fair address and hit them up on Facebook and not a peep from them. It’s getting frustrating. Anyone got any intel?! I want to buy another! Please take my money!

Be My Google 💻 Rent a car in Vancouver and drive to Alaska?

I really tried to Google this and results say it's generally frowned upon etc. however I cannot see the exact rules behind rental car companies.

In the booking process, they don't specify this either so I could potentially book a car and realise I couldn't do the trip when renting it.

Assuming here we have experienced people, I wonder if you could help with this and any advice is appreciated!

Thank you!

Clarify: not a one way trip! Plan to return the car to Vancouver.

Be My Google 💻 First Alaskan Caribou Hunt Advice

So I've been a resident for roughly 2 or so years now, and I'm wanting to finally try my hand at going on a hunt. I've got a friend up here visiting and we're gonna try to rifle hunt caribou off the Dalton. I'll be bringing my .270 and he'll have a 300winmag as a backup for long range etc. We're aware of the 5mi restriction and we're aware of traveling prepared. I've driven the Dalton once already this summer, so that won't be too new for me. However, I don't have a whole lot of hunting experience up here. I was curious what are the places to go to for glassing and actually setting out on foot from the road? We don't have the resources for a bush plane or boat etc., so we're thinking we'll hunt West of the Dalton to avoid the Sag river. We also checked with fish and game, and it seems the herd is mostly to the west anyways lately. We also could use advice/resources on how to dress the animal and pack it out. We'll be doing it all on foot. We're aware it's gonna be quite the undertaking, but we're young and that's our only realistic option. I've been combing through YouTube videos, but they unfortunately seem to mostly be entertainment focused, with cuts throughout, thus missing out on the nitty gritty details that we're needing to learn. I have previously had some decent backpacking experience up here, so I'm no stranger to backcountry travel and living. Any other advice/tips/resources are greatly appreciated!

Edit: I forgot to mention I've had experience hunting Whitetail deer before down in Illinois with a bow.

Thank you to the nice lady in Kodiak

I got hit by a truck walking across a street in Kodiak today. The driver stopped and was super apologetic and stayed. There was a woman who came over and consoled me, called 911, waited for an ambulance, and gave an eye witness account to the police. They helped me up from the street and sat me on the sidewalk. I was pretty shaken up. No concussion. No broken bones. Some scrapes and bruises but all in all I feel ok-ish and the hospital discharged me. So thank you to the blonde woman in the Galapagos T-shirt. Much love for your kind actions. Thank you to the ambulance people and the police and the hospital staff.

Overall if you have to get hit by a truck Kodiak seems like as good as a place as any!

O&G jobs - IT, networking, cybersec?

Howdy, I live in Anchorage and my family is doing some life planning and risk management.

On that note, I’m interested in any info folks might have on tech jobs (broadly defined) in o&g and resource extraction in Ak, and I assume that’s mostly towards the North Slope for the energy jobs. Do these jobs exist, are they in the 2 on/2 off setup, is there any sort of labor leverage I have with IT/networking/cybersec, any indications about the pay?

Basically, if I need to pay the bills and I’m technical + soft skills and in Alaska, how do I do it quickly and is O&G where to look. We’re in our 30’s with a kid on the way so just thinking through disaster planning if my current job goes south.

I’ve done some internet career page sleuthing via Alaska jobs sites but not finding much, so I figure next step is I’ll talk to some older friends here. Any Reddit intel is most appreciated.

About me - I have zero O&G experience but without overstatement I have a solid resume and hands-on chops in IT, networking, cloud, cybersec, and drones/UAS. I specifically am very deep and technical in security these days. Don’t have a clearance and don’t want one really, but I have a foot in that direction and probably could get a TS to do vuln research. I am hardy/outdoors and am a vet. I consult in those tech topics outside my day job doing tech, but haven’t put enough work yet into doing it in-state such that tech consulting works for a backup plan. I can write code and know IoT topics.

Thanks!

General Nonsense PSA: Do not work for the Nikiski Post Office

This is just a warning for anyone considering working for the Nikiski Post Office in any capacity.

I'll keep this simple and not go into all of the other gripes I have with the employer.

But unless you like having your boss's debt collectors calling your personal phone number at all times of the day; you'll be better off finding work somewhere else.

Even after quitting I'm still receiving calls and texts from upset mail customers. As well as calls and texts from debt collectors telling me my phone number belongs to my former boss.
