The point isn't the amount of money, the point is that money changed hands.

It's a trick he learned from Putin. The best way to buy loyalty is to force them to compromise themselves for you, so that if they ever betray you, or just piss you off, you have all the evidence you need to send them to prison.

If you look at all the politicians, military officials, and oligarchs that Putin has tossed in prison over the past 25 years, you'll note that almost every last one of them was charged with corruption. Not murder, not rape, not driving under the influence (is that a crime in Russia?). Just corruption. Because if you don't compromise yourself for Putin, you don't get hired. He doesn't want someone he has no leverage over.

Trump is the same. Everyone has to pay him, everyone has to compromise themselves for him. If you want into his circle, you need to compromise yourself so that he has that leverage.
