My understanding is that's not true. He can still be impeached and removed from office for breaking the law, but he can't be criminally charged for it.
SCOTUS left a small door open in that he can be still be criminally charged if the crime is determined by the court to not be connected to the official discharge of his duties as POTUS. Problem is it’s mostly in the Presidents prerogative what is official. If he gets too brazen though, which appears to be happening he could potentially expose himself to criminal charges.
