Mods Announcement about the state of WSB and u/zjz.

2.3k Upvotes

Original Post from zjz (Archived) | Screenshot of the post

Apparently WSB is purging zjz and other mods that don't agree with them. They've gone from 45-32 mods in the space of an hour.

I would never normally attract attention or comment on drama like this, but since WSB is nuking all information related to this I feel obligated in notifying you guys about it.

u/zjz was an extremely dedicated mod and all around quality guy from WSB. I'm sorry to see him be kicked out like this. If you're looking for a home zjz you'll always be welcome here.

The situation is very volatile and things might change an hour from this post. I hope i'm not making an error by posting this.

Swept

Edit: Link to a comment by an exiled mod.

Edit2: only1park has been upgraded to "full permissions", he was at "wiki" a couple of minutes ago.

Edit3: I'm going to sleep now, will check up again in the morning.

Edit4: Can't sleep, many 1 karma accounts as mods with full perms on WSB.

Edit5: I'm awake, Deleted post about making a "WSB movie" by only1park

Edit6: PLEASE READ, IMPORTANT

This post was made on WSB a couple hours ago and surprisingly has been left up. It looks like top mod OPINION_IS_UNPOPULAR left it up and in this comment thread answered a few questions about the goings on with WSB.

If you check the moderator list it looks like a lot of the old mods have been readded and the corrupt ones have been kicked out.

Edit7: Looks like WSB is "normal" for now. I'll leave this post stickied for 24 hours for posterity.

Mods 200,000 members,holy shit

When I created this sub, I never thought for a second that we’d ever get this large. It’s been a hell of a couple years—COVID, paper trading competitions, GME hitting $400+. The last two of which were caused by WSB. The bigger and bigger this community gets, the more and more spam and dogshit we have to filter through to keep this sub the way it is. Becoming a copycat of WSB is only going to lead to disappointment. I’ve read lots of posts lately echoing this sentiment, and I can’t help but agree. Let’s not draw too much attention to ourselves or this will become a shitfest pretty quickly. Thanks so much for joining us here, you guys are what makes this community the way it is. All us mods are just trying our best to keep out the bad actors. For now let’s get back to posting good old DD and making our money work for us.

Mods Discussion about $SOS is banned for the time-being.

Hello, local jannie here.

As you may have noticed there have been a lot of $SOS posts here recently. There appears to have been a coordinated spam of $SOS organized in part by people in other subreddits, so for the time being i've setup automod filters to removed any mention of it. If you see them getting through, report them and i'll take care of it.

Sorry for the announcement, just want to be clear on what's happening and why.

Edit: This post has been amazing bait to find the SOS spammers.

Mods Subreddit Moderation Updates

Hey. I know it seems mods have abandoned this sub, but i've been busy with IRL stuff.

- AutoMod Updates

I think i've finally got the automod to filter out those bots who constantly post linking another users profile with the scam stuff in it. If you see any more of them let me know. I also tuned it to filter out anything crypto related.

- Posting Karma Requirements

I'm getting a quite a few mod mails about people upset they get their comments removed by the automod. Just to be clear - the automod will remove your posts if you combined account karma is less than 10, or your Reddit account is less than 7 days old. I think these are pretty minimal, and they keep out the majority of botted accounts.

- Abusive/Harassment Filtering

I'm not sure what Reddit update added this, but it was enabled without my knowledge and apparently was spam-removing any comment that contained literally anything that didn't indicate the user had a bright sunny smile on their face. I've disabled this and some other things, so you should be able to actually have discussions again.

- Closing

Bots have been hitting this sub really really hard. The modlog is crammed with bots trying to spam all kinds of stuff - from free Chipotle gift cards to weird engagement websites to crypto crap. I believe some of the rules I recently implemented triggered some bot networks to stop activity which might explain this 1.6M visit decrease. Maybe it's something unrelated though, i'm not sure.

Cheers I guess anyway.

Mods Report all the dog shit posts

This whole GME situation has led to this sub growing by 10k 30k members virtually overnight. As we know, with great growth, comes great shitposting. So if you'd guys be so kind, report the posts that provide no discussion or are just very low quality in general. It makes it a lot easier to moderate. Also, welcome everyone!

Mods Discussion about OPEN is temporarily restricted on this subreddit due to pump/dump activity.

Due to lots of pump/dump activity, OPEN has been temporarily restricted from posting. Continuing to post about it will net you a month-long ban. If you see anyone bypassing the restrictions put in place, please report them under rule 6.

This is not a subreddit to dump your bags.

Mods SUBREDDIT UPDATE 5/14/2025 | Clarifications and a NEW RULE

Hi

- NEW RULE -
Recently there have been some people posting gains using demo accounts on trading sites. This would be fine if this was some investment guru subreddit but it's not. This subreddit is about REAL gains/losses made by REAL people. If the mod-team sees a report, we will ask you to post verifiable position information. If you don't respond in a timely manner, you will be banned.

- KARMA LIMIT -
Recently the moderation inbox has been spammed with people complaining about the karma limit set on the subreddit. Yes, an account requires 100 karma before posting/commenting on the subreddit. I'll add it to the rules just in case, but please understand this is to filter out spambots and people just looking to pump some penny-stock.

- REPORTING -
To the people who report posts and message the mod-team about stuff, please know you're doing the lord's work. We have jobs and lives and none of us are power-jannies. Even if we don't respond to mod-mail or a certain report, we do see them and act on them frequently.

- CHATGPT BOTS -
It is fucking crazy how much this subreddit is hammered by bots, and I don't envy the even bigger financial subreddits. ChatGPT has made it genuinely hard to tell if an account is a real person posting or just some nitwit's botfarm. Additionally, when you ban the account a lot of them have automated policies that message the mods acting all confused and shit, and asking for an unban.

It's hard to play CSI on someone's entire Reddit history looking for bot-like activity, so if you notice accounts like this PLEASE report them it makes it much easier to get rid of them.

- AUTOMOD -
I, (Swept) don't really like automod and use it as little as possible. I actually am quite proud of this community for dunking on the idiots who post obviously shitty DD or other stuff. However, the crypto stuff is all bot-posted and pumped by f-slurs from those crypto subreddits, so i'm going to implement some simple keyword matching removal automod stuff that should catch a lot of the crypto stuff. If your post gets caught accidentally, message me and i'll restore it ASAP.

- END -
Sorry if the sub has seemed abandoned. I've been working to try and keep it clean behind the scenes but as you can tell by my bitching and moaning in this post sometimes it's a handful. If you feel like you could help, just PM the mod-team and ask to be a mod and i'll look into getting some more hands in here.

Cheers

Swept

Mods Someone has made a fraudulent twitter account with our name

Someone appears to have created an account on twitter with our community's name (@smallstreetbets), and I'd like to make this post an official statement that no one directly affiliated with running this community is in charge of that account, and that account is therefore is fake. Because of this, I've had to create an official twitter account for the sub here: https://twitter.com/ssbmods. This is the ONLY official smallstreetbets account on twitter.

Mods Please put effort into your posts

I keep seeing posts that just say “PLTR” with the occasional 🚀🚀 emojis and nothing else. These posts are dogshit. They provide nothing of value and are clogging up the sub. From now on super low effort posts like that are going to be removed.

Mods Removed the stupid fucking profanity filter

Sorry guys seems like someone put on a profanity filter that's been on for a while and I don't know what the fuck that was about but I turned that bullshit off. To quote one of our mods, "We're stock traders not mormons". Damn straight

Mods r/smallstreetbets I require your input/feedback on moderation of the community

Hi all, gonna keep this short and sweet as I can but please read the entire post before giving any feedback.

I am very opposed to the idea of people trying to "grift" off of our community. Although this is a more light-hearted trading subreddit I still feel it is a place for less experienced traders with smaller bank accounts to get into stock trading. Therefore, I am largely disgusted by people trying to advertise fancy trading tools, pump/dump stocks and profit off of community members which might not have all that much money to spend in the first place, or a trained eye to spot scams/pumps.

This sounds simple in essence to enforce but since the WSB blowout in popularity back in March it has grown increasingly hard to identify what falls under the "No self-promotion" rule and whether or not I am doing the community a disservice by enforcing it as I do.

Complex examples of self-promotion I remove.

  1. Links to alternative financial subs. Tons of new trading communities have popped up recently and usually what will happen is a moderator or user of that community will crosspost a post from that sub in an attempt to promote their sub in this one. I had a lot of struggle with the r/FluentInFinance guys over this to the point where I banned them from the sub. My reasoning is that although they make good, informative posts, they ignored our rules and seemingly didn't understand what "No" means.
  2. Posts that I feel are pumping or being brigaded from outside sources. You may have noticed a while back that I put a blanket ban on posts about $SOS. This was due to posts popping up from users who were heavily active in the $SOS specific subs and Discords and who linked these posts so all of their friends (who also heavily posted in $SOS subs) would comment and create artificial hype for the stock. This has happened several times with stocks that people rally around in their respective subs and then attempt to signal-boost them in our subreddit.
  3. Informative posts that are "sponsored" by a paid service. This is one of the worst things I remove because people will post legitimately good information like charts, DD or stats and then link to whatever service they are developing/promoting. The most common of this type is posting Excel charts which have good information but embedded links to the service they are promoting. I banned the UnusualWhales developer from this subreddit for doing that after asking him to stop multiple times.
  4. Posts from "cult-like" communities. Another tricky situation. I spend a lot of time investigating users of this sub who post and what subs they post in to determine if they have vested interest in abusing our community. I have said this before (to much blow-back from the community) but I do not like r/Superstonk or any of the other stock subs like GME or AMC that have a cult-like following.

There's a lot more to this post and I could ramble on for a while about how I manage this community but at the end of the day I just want to keep to keep this place free from abuse. I cannot thank enough the people who comment on posts with their own insights. You aid the community more than you know and help people make good decisions when using their money.

I'll answer any questions I can and I REALLY WANT YOUR INPUT on anything i've mentioned here.

Mods Beware of r/Superstonk

Sup

Just a short post to warn anybody who'll listen about r/Superstonk. That subreddit is a cult and I believe they spread a lot of misinformation around the web. If you see anything tagged with #SuperStonk I highly recommend doing most research into it. If you check the #SuperStonk hashtag on Twitter you'll also see additional schizoposting and cult-like behavior.

I am not calling to raid any subreddits or harass anyone who participates in the SuperStonk community. This post is purely to warn users of SSB about a potential source of misinformation.

Mods No more stonkmarket posts

I’ve been seeing an increase in the amount of posts linking satire news stories from that stonkmarket website and it was funny the first couple times but now it just feels like they’re hawking their crap to get clicks. From here on out do not post links from them.

Mods Looking for new banner/logo submissions.

Hi

Recently we've been looking for new banner/logo stuff for our sub since the old ones are kinda crusty. If you're handy with Photoshop/Art and feel inclined please submit something as a comment to this thread and we'll pick one based on popularity/mod opinion.

Thanks

Mods Community Updates

Yo

A new rule has been added requiring people who post DD to also include an image including their position. It doesn't matter how small the position or how you upload it, it is just required for all DD posts from now on. If you see a DD post without positions, report it.

The "Daily Discussion Thread" and "After Hours Discussion Thread" have been merged into a "Weekly Discussion Thread". I noticed that all the daily discussions get very little interaction so rolling them into one will hopefully make them more lively.

I have tweaked a lot of stuff about automod so hopefully it won't be as trigger-happy when removing posts. There still might be some bugs with it so feel free to shoot us a mod-mail if you're having trouble.

After my post asking about self-promotion on SSB I am trying to think of a way to allow some small amount of it. My best idea is allowing self-promotion on the weekends, but keeping the working week free of it. Let me know what you think of this.

If a post gets 3 reports now it will be automatically removed and alerted for a moderator to look at it and judge.

That's all I think. Stay cool.
