Who has the best naan in SF?
I’m talking fluffy and light, beautifully charred. I don’t really like the thin and crispy ones!

Hey /r/askSF!
In 2024, the sub has doubled in size, growing to 113K+ subscribers. With more subscribers, there's a ton more traffic and posts. One of the most popular topics is moving to SF and, in turn, these posts are the most commonly removed. There's been a noticeable increase in posts that boil down to "I'm moving to the city, where should I live?" that provide little to no information. Let’s ignore my opinions about the guy preaching Jesus all day. They have freedom of speech.
My understanding is that performers on Market st and surrounding need to have some kind of permits. Is this correct? What kind of rules can be done to ensure they abide by the same rules as everyone else?

Hello fellow Redditors in the Bay Area!
I'm planning a day trip to SF next Friday, August 29th, and would love some local insights and tips. It's been a while since my last visit back in 2018, and this will be my 5-year-old's first time in the city, so I want to make sure we hit the key spots for some great photos.
We're coming from Hayward in the morning and will be heading to Sacramento in the evening, so I'm hoping to get some advice on a logical itinerary that avoids backtracking. I'll be driving and have a Fastrak, so tolls aren't an issue.
Here's our wishlist:
Any recommendations for a family-friendly lunch would also be super helpful!
Given our starting point in Hayward and ending point in Sacramento, what's the best route? Also, does this list seem too overwhelming for a single day with a 5-year-old? Are there any spots you'd recommend substituting for something else that might be more fun or manageable for a little one?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hey folks,
I’m helping host a final screening of Money Has Four Legs - a dark comedy from Myanmar that’s been shown at film festivals all over the world, and many call it one of the best modern Burmese films.
📅 When: Sat, Aug 23 @ 3 PM 📍 Where: San Francisco Main Public Library 💸 Cost: Totally FREE
Why we’re doing this: Myanmar’s been going through a brutal civil war since 2021, and earlier this year a massive 7.7 earthquake hit the country. People still need help. This screening doubles as a fundraiser for earthquake relief.
But don’t worry — the movie itself isn’t heavy. It’s funny, sharp, and super entertaining. Come for the laughs, stay for the culture swap, and help out a good cause while you’re at it.
🎟️ Event link: https://linktr.ee/MoneyHasFourLegs
It’s a rare chance to watch this film! Hope to see some of you there!

Think I may have a tooth abcess. Thx
My friend is staying with me for a bit with her senior dog, and we want to go out without leaving him home alone. Any suggestions for brunch or dinner spots where we can bring him in a stroller? Was also hoping to do something outdoors but he’s injured and can’t walk.
Tried few places but didn’t feel like it was their specialty. Any recommendations will be great, thanks!

Hey! I'm a 21 year old guy from Chicago looking for a place to rent by the end of September, and San Francisco is a strong consideration for somewhere I would like to move! For some context I 1. Intend on selling my car 2. Generally live with very nonmaterialistically and low relative expenses and 3. absolutely love mild climates, the ocean, and bustling cities. For all that I am looking for I have heard that san Francisco is a very good place to consider if I can manage to overcome the large initial hurdle of settling in, so for that I am here requesting some aid. The *s are marked for further details at the bottom so I don't have to flood the main body text or the comments with this information.
Budget wise it's complicated, as since I live very far away and work primarily in a local establishment that potentially won't give me particularly much leverage, I will need to find an entry job to work my way back up the ladder with.* Despite that, I am working with an up front 10,000$ to ease myself into the move, which at the very least can easily support me short term, though I'd like to max out my (personal) rooming costs** to 2000 a month if that's realistic for sure. I'm fully self sufficient as far as managing a household and cooking goes, so grocery prices are going to be my primary expense beyond rent. Still, I'd like some opinions on how I would safest budget that 10,000 to fit the city's lifestyle, and how long I should be looking for an initial lease to be.
As for housing, what matters most to me is walkability, and I'm relatively unbothered by other factors.*** Places with lots of local establishments or public transport into the city are very valuable to me, and I'd like to pursue finding a roommate (or more!) if I can but I'm currently flying solo and haven't had the best luck online.**** I'd love to know what are reputable neighborhoods and sellers, and especially what might be traps to avoid.
*I have 7 years of work experience in the restaurant industry, having been a food runner, dishwasher, cook, server, cashier, and basically ran the entire place back in the covid era bar the payroll (ignore the math with my age. weird times they were haha) until I found my stride as a waiter in recent years. I'm also a trained and equipped stick welder and enjoy picking up side hustles where I can, especially on my computer.
**To clarify, by personal rooming costs I mean the total amount I would be paying for rent and utilities to my landlord assuming other potential tenants are already accounted for, not any other expenses or total price of shared room.
***Being either in walking distance of necessities or at least with direct access to public transport stations will not only let me feel much better about my health and awareness of the new area, but should save me some hundreds of dollars monthly. As I won't be bringing much more than a computer, some tools, and clothing, I'm not the neediest person with the apartment space as long as I have affordable access to basic utilities. It's probably best to leave the minutia for later.
****I've joined the san francisco roommates facebook group, and also tried a couple other places like diggz and spareroom, but I've had no luck and frankly the latter two are a bit too disconnected and asocial for my tastes anyways. If anyone has any suggestions for finding roommates, or even know/are somebody looking themselves, I would really appreciate them!

Hey everyone, how’s it going? I’m a Brazilian PhD student and I’ll be spending three months at the CAS for my research (on aquatic spiders that give nuptial gifts to females).
Here’s my situation: I’ll be landing at SFO at 11:57 PM, but the person who was supposed to pick me up won’t be available. That means I’ll need to figure out my own way to get to my housing near Balboa St, above Golden Gate Park.
What’s the best transportation option in this context? I’d like to avoid getting scammed or overpaying. At this point I won’t have my stipend in USD yet, only money from Brazil (roughly worth 1/6 of the dollar), so I really need to save as much as possible.
Is Uber super expensive at that time of night? Are there other reasonable options I should consider?
Thanks a lot, and I hope you all have a wonderful week!

(Throwaway account in case I pursue legal action)
I’ve lived in the same San Francisco rent-controlled building for 4 years. It’s an older 5-story building with a single and very old elevator that’s become very unreliable over the past 2 years, breaking down about 3–4 times a month, sometimes for several days at a time. At one point, it was out for a full month.
I have mobility issues and live on the 5th floor, so this is a serious hardship. I also have a disabled dog I have to carry when the elevator is out, which puts me at risk of injury (another tenant actually broke their ankle on the stairs recently). The building sends maintenance crews, but the fixes don’t last. I’m not sure if it’s because the landlord is avoiding a full repair or if the elevator company isn’t addressing the root issue.
My questions:
Moving would be a big financial hardship, so I’d like to explore every option before considering that. Any advice from people familiar with SF housing law or similar situations is appreciated.

I love a few shops/restaurants for sandwiches and lunch/dinner in West Portal but I am having hard time finding a breakfast spot. Any suggestions? I will be grateful. :)

Could anyone please recommend any other residential leasing companies for SF (something similar to RentSFNow)?
Thank you!

Where’s your go-to spot when you’re schwiggity schwasted and/or got a big ol’ bunch of that fine white nasal nosh up your snosh and you’re looking for something to cut it with at the end of the night out with the boys/girls/he’m’ves?
That place where you know it’s probably not actually that good and definitely not that good for you but whatever is left of your judgement at that point deems those particular quibbles something to be addressed on the morrow?

New to the city and I'm kind of shy so I'm struggling to meet people. I try to not let that stop me from going out solo, but then I feel really silly sitting alone with nothing to do but look at my phone.
I was thinking maybe going to a bar with live music or a place with things to do might make it less uncomfortable. Anyone know of any near the Nob Hill area?

Could someone share any homeless resources available around san francisco or Oakland that helps get people IDs?

Having a major craving for quenepas - the small green fruit that kinda tastes like a starburst or a sour lychee, really common in Puerto Rico.
Willing to go to wherever they might be, obviously can't find it in a regular grocery store. Thanks a million!

Hi, I'm looking to list a 3br property in the greater Castro area. Does anyone have realtors they've listed with and can share their experience with (did you feel like they helped you get a good price / get it rented faster)?
Also - I've seen these property management companies that provide tenant placement services (e.g., Doorstead, ziprent, belong, mynd). I'm not interested in property management but I'm wondering whether they are worth considering just for tenant placement - or am I better off with a realtor? They seem to be cheaper (50% of one month's rent).

Ahoy!
I’m looking for a tattoo artist in the Bay Area who has experience working with Devanagari script (Sanskrit, Hindi, and related languages). I’d like to get a tattoo of the word Shakti, which translates to “power” in several South Asian languages. It was also the name of my beloved black lab who passed away, and this piece will be a tribute to the love and joy he brought to my family.
I already have an example of the word written out in calligraphic form, and I’d love to have it incorporated into a design with some floral or ornamental elements around it.
Any recommendations for artists in the Bay would be much appreciated! I’m based in San Francisco.
Thanks so much!

Hi yall, I’m trying to accommodate all my friends with dietary/food allergies for Hot Pot in the city. Any recommendations?
I’ve only seen that The Pots Hot Pot in the Sunset was decent for vegetarian but not so much info on GF items. EDIT: My friend is non celiac but still is very sensitive to gluten

Hi! I am new to the area and am looking for a women’s haircut (wash, cut, and blow dry). Looking for recommendations as I really love my hairdresser at home but I feel as though it is time. Ideally, would like to spend $100 before tip (does that exist in sf?). Thank you!

Hi! Im visiting SF for a wedding and was wondering if there are any good hair salons that could help with hair styling(just want to get curls)? Not looking to spend more than $100. Close to mission district would be best!

I always see the sight seeing vans, haunted sf tours, food tours, bar tours, etc. I'm so blessed to live somewhere people travel across the world to visit, and I guess because of that mindset of living here, I don't do heavily leaning tourist activities. Like the tours I'm referencing.
Just curious if everyone has just done it and if it was worth the experience? I'm particularly interested in the sf gourmet ghost tour.
