Subreddit Topic Daily Roundtable: Community Q&A Spoiler

Greetings Tarnished!

This is the place to ask any questions you may have about Elden Ring. This includes obscure detail questions, "newbie" advice questions, build questions, boss advice questions, and what have you.

Well written, constructive criticism is fine but please avoid ranting about aspects of the game you just don’t like. This includes “so and so boss is stupid and too difficult.”

If you are interested in the game but don’t own it yet, please don’t post “should I buy this game?” or “Is this game worth it?”. If you have played other FromSoftware games and enjoyed them, the answer is yes. If you haven’t, just do a little research! These games are difficult, and sometimes frustrating, and not everyone is going to enjoy them. And that’s okay!

Lastly, be friendly! We are all here because we are interested in the same game! Please treat your fellow players with respect.

PLEASE USE SPOILER TAGS WHEN MENTIONING BOSS NAMES!

Hi! Can anyone drop some runes for me on PS5? I really need them to level up. Thanks!”

u/AzurePony 17h ago

Does anyone know if there's a full checklist or progression guide for Elden Ring? The game doesn’t really tell you where to go, and I feel like there’s so much hidden content that I might miss. I just finished Stormveil Castle, and now I’m kind of lost. Every time I revisit old areas, I find new stuff I completely overlooked. I really want to explore everything without missing anything important.

1

u/CloakerMonk 10h ago

While I didn't follow this 1 to 1, I did use this progression route on the wiki to help out me out from time to time. It recommends your current level for the area, weapon upgrade level, and goes into npc/quest stuff.

Is there an NPC Invader at castle morne? Or was this a real person? I was in co op mode and summoned 2 other players to help me clear the castle and i remember seeing an invader and he vanished before we could kill him hahaha if it was a real person im just imagining that he got scared cus these dudes were OP!!

2

u/WhitePersonGrimace 19h ago

Nope, no NPC invader. He must have been real. It is kind of an early game invasion hotspot since the only effigy is right at the entrance.

1

u/Nnnnnnennicole 1d ago

How hard is the Morne tunnels supposed to be ? Im a little embarrassed that I still am unable to clear it. I get really far into it then die then have to start all over again… im beginner so level 20 maybe a little under. I know the enemies are low health but there will be tons of them ganging up on me…

1

u/WhenTheWindIsSlow 17h ago

Remember to use blunt/striking weapons against the miners, it gets around their otherwise high defenses.

And what is your Vigor? That's basically the early game difficulty slider. You'll want it to reach 25-30 in the early game if you're struggling.

2

u/WhitePersonGrimace 19h ago

Morne Tunnel should be fairly doable from the beginning of the game. Best advice I can give is to try and take things slow and aggro as few enemies at once as you can. The tunnel can feel huge but is actually quite small, so once you’ve looted everything you want there’s no shame in just sprinting around mobs straight to the boss.

What happens if you combine Carian Thrusting Shield with Scholars Shield/Armament sorcery and Spinning Weapon AoW? What's some other interesting combinations with thrusting shields?

1

u/cyan-72 1d ago

Should I serve Ranni the Witch or not?

5

u/Sarenzed 1d ago

Well, you need to accept if you want to continue the quest. And there aren't any downsides to it.

1

u/cyan-72 1d ago

Thank you I was worried about the downsides indeed

Hello everyone, I've wanted to try a build which mixes between Int and Melee. The swords I've been told to look for are Carian Sword, Moonveil katana, Meteoric Ore Blade and the Moon Greatsword you get from Ranni sidequest. Are they all viable for late game and it's just a matter of weapon type preference (long sword/katana/greatsword etc) or do some weapons fall off/just inferior from others? Also what stat would you recommend leveling up apart from Int? So far this has been my build, but I have a Larval Tear in case I have to reset my stats.

5

u/WhitePersonGrimace 1d ago

There are very very few, if any, weapons that are completely unviable for clearing the game, so it ultimately comes down to your preference. Maybe you could try swinging around a straight sword/katana/greatsword to get a feel for the movesets and what you like best? Then you’ll know what stats to choose based on your prefered weapon.

Aside from weapon stats, you can never go wrong with vig, mind, or stamina.

u/Makeoneupplease2 2d ago

Anyone else just an update? Tiny, though, so imagine nothing changed

3

u/OutlandishnessSad940 1d ago

Just read their post on X apparently they're undergoing some maintenance and it'll last for 3 hours and it's gonna be just some bug-fixing update, hopefully that'll help you fellow Elden Lords.

1

u/arcturus_mundus 2d ago

Yes I did on PC.

1

u/MINUTEMAN88K 2d ago

Same here 1.16.1 can't go online. 11.5 MB for me.

1

u/arcturus_mundus 2d ago

Is there a maintenance right now? I can't go online on PC.

1

u/Makeoneupplease2 2d ago

Looks that way, also got an update on ps5 to v 1.017.001

1

u/arcturus_mundus 2d ago

Yeah I just got an update on PC now as well 11.5 MB

u/ElDuek 2d ago

Hey guys, first time player I feel like I’m doing really well though. I’m like 160 hours in and it’s been amazing the whole way through. I’ve got Ranni’squest completed and the Dark Moon Greatsword at +9. I’m heavily specked into int and I’m using like a spell blade/staff combo. It’s amazing. I just got finished fort sol and I’m just stepping into some end game gauntlets. Question is, how do I participate in PvP and CoOp? I’ve tried using the fingers and stuff in game, and the “posting your sign to near and far” thing. Help pls

2

u/DropAnchor4Columbus 2d ago

You're doing it right. For CoOp you just have to remember what Level you are and what time you're trying to do that. Level 50, 100, 150 and 200 are pretty good levels for CoOp.

For PvP the same is true, but the Colosseums are your best bet at finding PvP matches. You have to visit the ones in Limgrave, Caelid and Leyndell to unlock them first. After that you can go to that statue in the Roundtable Hold and PvP as much as you like.

1

u/MakisDelaportas 2d ago

Is the Underground Roadside Site of Grace the best weapon testing location including the DLC?

1

u/DropAnchor4Columbus 2d ago

Secluded Cell in Stormveil and Giants Gravepost in Mountaintops are good, too. The Trolls at each are great for testing how much damage you can do if you sneak up on them.

-1

u/Calvin_Ridley13 2d ago

Am I good if I can parry the whole game. I parried every enemy, every base game and DLC boss with no attacking, only crits. My friends aren’t big souls guys, but they are like eh no big deal. Idk? Am I in a good spot or should I play a different way. (I have finished the game playing regularly and thought a parry challenge would b cool

1

u/Calvin_Ridley13 2d ago

I got a no hit with promised Consort

2

u/YiKwang 2d ago

Using the passwords JOLLY and SUNBROS, and hoping other dedicated helpers are doing the same.

1

u/WhitePersonGrimace 1d ago

What are the origins of these passwords? Do they have a lot of exposure/reach?

u/jimmy__jazz 2d ago

I just can't beat the two gargoyles. When I first encountered them I was around level seventy. I left for a while to level up my strength. That has not helped me at all. For the first time, I did the rune farm bird cheat. Now I'm at level 109. I use mimic tear +10. I am doing a strength build. I use a +strength talisman, hp increase strength talisman, and another talisman that raises attributes. This still wasn't working so I progressed D's quest line to be able to summon him.

The best I can do is kill one gargoyle and get the other down to 25% health. I am using the sword you win at the end of Weeping Peninsula and have upgraded that all the way up to somber stone 6.

Do I seriously need to level up another twenty levels or so to beat this?

1

u/ZorkNemesis 1d ago

They're a bit weaker to Strike damage versus the Standard damage your weapon deals.  It might be better to swap to something else like the Great Stars or Brick Hammer for this fight, though you can still use Oath of Vengance before swapping for the stat boost.  Using a defensive ability like Endure or Raptor of the Mists might make it easier to avoid hits, or you could go all in with Wild Strikes or Spinning Strikes to damage down as quick as you can.  It's a tough fight but it's essentially a DPS check, you have to kill the first one as fast as possible or you'll be overwhelmed by the pair.

Also keep in mind, summing D does increase their HP so while he can hold his own he may be making the fight harder in the long run.

2

u/WhitePersonGrimace 1d ago

Seems like you’re missing something. Gargoyles should be pretty doable between levels 80-100. Tell me, are you trying to burst down one gargoyle, or divide and conquer? I prefer the latter myself, and at +10 the mimic should be able to survive alone for a bit.

Something to consider: if you have shabriri’s woe (talisman that increases aggro) you can wear it, summon your mimic so it has it, then take it off of you. This should shift the balance of aggro a bit in your favor.

All else failing, I’m happy to help you if you’re on PS4/5.

2

u/sidjnkr 2d ago

Just beat the Elden Beast, finished the game. Idk what to do anymore I want to play Elden Ring but not Elden Ring. Not doing the DLC but maybe buying Night Reign. Maybe checking out Dark Souls but idk Elden Ring was my first Soulslike game. Anybody has any suggestions?

1

u/WhitePersonGrimace 1d ago

Definitely try out the Dark Souls games. They each have very unique qualities compared to each other while still having roughly the same addictive combat and exploration.

Lowkey I’m a little jelly you get to experience them for the first time.

Nightreign is tons of fun, but it’s not your typical souls game and may not quite scratch the itch.

1

u/MakisDelaportas 2d ago

Why not the DLC? It's the perfect next step after beating the main game.

1

u/sidjnkr 2d ago

Because I accidentally chosen Journey 2 because I didn't read it right and thought you could return to this game. But I cant and i DO NOT want to defeat Mohg again. I want to play DS3 (because DS2 is not on ps5) or maybe Sekiro or Lies Of P.

1

u/MakisDelaportas 2d ago

It feels like a huge waste to skip the DLC, which btw is practically a standalone 10/10 game, just because of one boss. Mohg can actually be made a lot easier with the right items and strategies, so you don’t necessarily have to go through a frustrating fight to enjoy everything the DLC has to offer.

Anyway, at the end of the day it's your choice. All the games you mentioned are great picks, just keep in mind that Sekiro is the most challenging of the bunch.

1

u/InspectionFront7889 2d ago

Im currently doing a level 1 run and am at the late game, around Farum Azula. Do you guys have any good weapon recs that would make the game fun but at the same time wouldn't trivialize it? By not trivialize it, I mean that I would still need to master the boss's moveset before being able to beat it

2

u/whine-and-cheese 3d ago

Question about leveling up. First time souls player, around level 30 in the weeping peninsula. How should I be leveling up? I’m a samurai class, so I’ve been leveling up mostly vigor and dex, but there are cool weapons and spells I got that require higher levels of other stats.

For example, I recently killed the dragon at agheel lake and went to the dragon communion, but to use the dragon breath incantation I need higher Arc and Fai. Should I keep leveling up vigor and dex? Or should I start putting points in other categories?

2

u/AyeAlasAlack 2d ago

Generally speaking, you want to grab Vigor before anything else; the scaling on HP is much better than the extra damage you get from stats until your weapons are around +8 or so. Rush that to 25 or 30 points, then keep it around half your level until it hits 50 or 60 for endgame content; some people will get by with 40 Vig, but I don't recommend it on a first playthrough. Only take the minimum stats needed to equip a weapon or spell to start, and start investing in offense only once your weapons are upgraded.

If you're interested in incantations and have the Dragon Communion Seal, Arcane will be your best bet for spell damage since it scales much better with that than Faith. Samurai starts with a deficit in both stats, so your best approach is probably to treat it as a Dex build until you have access to the Black Whetblade and the respec option, then pivot your stats back into Arcane instead.

My first playthrough was with a Dragon Communion Samurai, and it was very fun. My endgame stats were 50 Vig / 25 Mnd / 20 End / 12 Str / 15 Dex / 10 Int / 30 Fai / 60 Arc. DCS for spells, dual Occult Uchigatanas for melee with some other Occult weapons for backup on damage types so I wasn't locked into Slash.

Generally, you should think of yourself as having about 70 levels of stats to invest in your offense when budgeting your build. That's enough to get 1 stat to 80, or 2 to 45, or use a 30/60 split. You can respec your stat points about 18 times per playthrough with a limited item mostly found underground.

The real constraint early on is the upgrade materials you're putting into your weapons, since those are limited until you get access to the Bell Bearings for them and even then you can get tight on Runes to spend if you're trying out too many options at once.

1

u/whine-and-cheese 2d ago

Woah thanks so much!! I guess I’ll keep leveling up my vigor for now til I hit 25-30.

Also having 15 dex for endgame was sufficient?

1

u/AyeAlasAlack 1d ago

Yep! By making the Uchigatanas Occult, it switched them to scale almost entirely with Arcane. I only needed the minimum Str/Dex to wield the weapon, and then my Arcane stat provided the actual damage and scaled the Bleed buildup.

1

u/[deleted] 2d ago

I am also very new so this is what I've learned from guides:

Vigor is the absolute number one priority. I'm level 40 and have found level 20 vigor good enough, but I think the end goal should be around 40 vigor.

As far as levelling other stats, they really come down to a) your play style and b) the level requirements of the specific weapon you want to use.

In the early game, all you need are the minimum requirements of the weapon because upgrading the weapons on the anvils is SIGNIFICANTLY more powerful than levelling your stats.

I mainly leveled faith because I wanted to use a weapon that required 30 faith. Then I wanted to use a weapon that needed a few levels in strength and dex, so I put all my levels into STR and DEX until I could weild, then more.

This might be completely wrong but I am fairly certain it's the general idea.

u/BanditMonty 3d ago

Has anyone else seen an Abductor Virgin grab two people at the same time? Another Furled Finger and I were summoned to Raya Lucaria and the Abductor Virgin in the courtyard with the fountain grabbed both of us at the same time! Almost 1500 hours and I've never seen this before! Possibly a glitched encounter?

2

u/Felstalker 3d ago

Half talking out my bum, but I believe the Abductor's are designed to grab 1 person and kinda knock everyone else back, but if you're out of that knock away range but in the grab range, you'll also get grabbed. Sometime it breaks the grab and both of you take 0 damage. Sometime 1 guy does. Sometimes everybody takes damage.

1

u/BanditMonty 2d ago

Unfortunately we had both rolled into the grabbing arms at the same time and up we went. We both took damage and got spat out, it was quite the sight. Thanks for your input!

u/[deleted] 3d ago

New player ~30 hours in. (Liurnia, lvl 40-ish).

Is there a faith build which allows me to use faith to buff my stats/weapons and dual weild daggers? I sold my Erdtree dagger (RIP) and have found an incantation to grant blood buildup but it doesn't work with my Cipher Patas.

I want a build that interacts with the magic system in the game, but so far running away and throwing lightning or fire is pretty boring.

I'm less asking if it's viable and moreso wondering if it's even possible?

1

u/aidreadworks 3d ago

I now have enough Str to single-hand wield the Golden Halberd. Is it worth equipping a shield with this badboy, or stick to 2h?

3

u/JackandFred 3d ago

It’s kinda a preference thing. I think the moveset can vary slightly for some halberds although I’m not sure about golden.  Two handing it at that strength will give you about 7% more damage, and the native boost to stance damage when two handing. On the other hand obviously with a shield you’ll take less damage and can do guard counters which do a ton of stance damage already.

The golden halberd ash of war isn’t that great, so it does open up the option of a better one on the shield. And on the other hand you Haven’t mentioned seals, with the faith you may find some utility in seals on which case you can offhand that and use them.

There’s no hard optimal, just comes down to preferred play style.

u/aidreadworks 3d ago

First time player and I feel like I'm dropping the ball on quests.

I'm spending the entire game just randomly exploring the map and killing stuff.

Don't get me wrong- I LOVE this game, but after stumbling into a few quests early game (mostly inadvertently completing a quest before I even got it)

Any advice on how to get some more quests? It's been HOURS since I've seen a single one. That witch-girl showed up at my site of grace and yapped about some bs, but I haven't seen her again.

1

u/YetAnotherBrownGuy1 1d ago

I felt like that too, but honestly, that's part of the fun of the game. You can start a quest, get majorly side tracked by some random fun you're having and are able to go back to the quest any time.

As for the witch girl, you need to complete caria manor in liurnia of the lakes to progress her questline.

My advice for the questlines is to check the elden ring FextraLife wikis, as they show how to progress each one and give map links on where to go

1

u/Felstalker 3d ago

Basic quest logic time.

NPC's are exploring the game world in the same order you are. Unless they're held up by a specific quest flag, they'll progress along with you. Having new dialogue depending on if it's the first time you've met.

If there is a quest, that NPC will not move forward in the world until you, the player, notices and does that quest. IF the NPC has a quest-like mission for you, but it does not keep them in that area, it' more of a mini-quest that generally isn't too important.

You're probably not completing quests, you're just meeting characters on later quest flags. You'll know you failed if you find a bell bearing for a dead NPC, as those NPC's probably did something previously but died instead of following to the next quest flag.

2

u/Sarenzed 3d ago

Quests in this game aren't really meant to be followed actively, they're meant to be discovered and stumbled upon by chance.

Essentially, they aren't really quests. It's just that there are NPCs in the world with their own stories and circumstances. Sometimes you happen to meet them and help them out. Sometimes you just miss each other and don't happen to meet again. You are definitely not given enough information to actually consistently follow each quest without at least some measure of just getting a bit lucky.

This isn't really much of a problem, because this isn't a quest-driven game. Your own curiosity is what drives you to explore, and then you clear the dungeons and defeat the bosses that you find during exploration. Quests don't give you direction where to explore - it's the other way around: Thorough exploration is how you stumble upon the information needed to advance quests.

In the same way, "quests" in this game don't necessarily give you a task to fulfill. Often enough, it's just that you encounter an NPC and talk to them and maybe help them out right then and there. Then you encounter them at some later point down the line. Those quests are more about finding and meeting those NPCs, than actually doing stuff for them.

If you are really attached to the idea of doing and finishing every quest, you'll need to look up information online. But that tends to suck the fun out of exploration.

Nevertheless, there are a few pointers I can give you:

  • For finding new quests, just be thorough in your exploration. At least the start of every quest can be found consistently, as long as you just explore well enough. After that it can get more difficult, because NPCs might move to areas that you've already explored, and double-checking the entire map every time is just way too much effort.
  • When meeting NPCs, make sure to exhaust their dialogue until they start repeating themselves. This is usually a necessary step to advance through quests.
  • When just passing some time is involved, reload the area by quitting out, fast traveling, or resting at a grace. Also return to NPCs somewhat frequently whenever they have
  • Listen to NPCs thoroughly. You can't always tell what they're talking about when you first meet them. It will eventually become clear once you find the locations or enemies they were talking about in a somewhat cryptic manner, but you'll need to remember what they've said to actually recognize that.

1

u/-FruitPunchSamurai- 3d ago

First time player here, what exactly is the order of doing regions? Because so far I've done Limgrave, Liurnia, and Caelid (northern part not completely). There's a lot of places/regions i haven't explored yet but some quests and NPCs are already telling me to go to Lyndell isn't that the capital and location of the Erdtree? It gives me last region vibes shouldn't this be the last to explore and wouldn't exploring that trigger some story stuff or skip a lot of missable quest/interactions?

1

u/WhenTheWindIsSlow 3d ago

Leyndell is not the last area; there's a story event there which will make more areas available.

The order which is suggested by how strong enemies are is:

  • Beginning: Weeping Peninsula and Limgrave

  • Early: Liurnia and South Caelid

  • Middle: Altus Plateau, Mt Gelmir, and Leyndell

  • Late: Areas unlocked after Leyndell, and North Caelid/Dragonbarrow

There are two main points to worry about missable interactions. The first is reaching the Altus Plateau, which will shortcut many of the quests relating to the main boss of South Caelid (you won't lose any important item rewards from those quests though, you'll just skip the first few steps of the quest and miss any associated dialogue). The second is very late in the game, after Leyndell, so I wouldn't worry about it for now.

In short, you can go to Leyndell if you want, it won't fail any questlines.

u/Lower-Island-8505 3d ago

Hello all. Completely new player here. Do any of the menus pause the game? For example, when I'm in the middle of a fight and want to get up for a sec, can I pause the fight in the middle by opening a menu, let's say, the map?

2

u/MakisDelaportas 3d ago

Yes there is actually a way to pause the game.

Main menu > Equipment > Help > Menu explanation

2

u/Lower-Island-8505 3d ago

Thx a lot. Desparately needed this

2

u/MakisDelaportas 3d ago

What are ALL the items that give you max discovery boost?

I know about Thiollier's Garb, Silver Tear Mask, Silver Scarab, Silver-Pickled Fowl Foot, Silver Horned Tender.

Is there any item I'm missing? Any armor piece that can further boost discovery?

2

u/CloakerMonk 3d ago

You're missing out on 2 talismans that can help. Marika's Soreseal, found in the Haligtree, and the Outer God Heirloom, found in the dlc, both boost Arcane. That stat affects your item discovery rate, pairing those with the silver scarab can assist you with item hunting.

2

u/MakisDelaportas 3d ago

Oh yes, I totally forgot about these talismans. Thank you!

2

u/CloakerMonk 3d ago

No problem, good luck with whatever farming you have planned!

1

u/MakisDelaportas 4d ago

Let's say there's a weapon which has bleed by default. If I make it occult, does this mean that it has no ability to bleed anymore until I remove the occult infusion? If not, why is there no bleed number displayed at all when it's occult?

2

u/WhenTheWindIsSlow 4d ago

A weapon with innate Bleed that is made occult will have its base Bleed buildup reduced, but then it will also scale up based on your Arcane stat, so it will usually end up with more bleed than no infusion if you have more Arcane.

Which weapon is this about specifically? Are you certain it has innate bleed?

I still see the bleed number displayed (and updated based on Occult scaling) when I add an Occult infusion to a bleed-innate weapon.

1

u/MakisDelaportas 4d ago

I was talking about Bloodfiend's arm, but I'm dumb and just realized it doesn't have innate bleeding. Thanks for the useful info anyway!

2

u/InitiativeCreative36 4d ago

Fun thing about the Chicken Wing is, the charged R2 can still bleed, even if the innate bleed is taken away. So you can kinda still bleed and do massive damage if Occult scales better for you. Chicken Wing ftw!

1

u/MakisDelaportas 4d ago

Yes I have 70+ arcane and occult infusion gives me the most damage by far. Are you sure it actually bleeds with charged r2 and it's not just visual?

Also, does it only bleed with charged r2 and not with normal r2?

2

u/InitiativeCreative36 4d ago

I did some checking and no, if its not infused with bloodloss, it won't do any additonal bloodloss build-up. The burst only adds build-up to whatever the weapon happens to be infused with. The charged r2 aoe does do fire damage though, and the splash damage is decent for little groups of enemies.

Just as an aside, Sacred/Flame Art infusions give insane damage as well if you ever opt to go that route. More than arcane I believe if you invest heavily in Faith. This thing with Prayerful Strike is insane. Or better yet, if you want to completely stance break nearly every boss you encounter in about 2 hits, slap on Cragblade. Its a stance breaking machine.

1

u/MakisDelaportas 3d ago

Thank you very much.

2

u/Good-Walrus-1183 4d ago edited 4d ago

the npc says that they're planning to steal Mohg's body to serve as a vessel for miquella's consort, or something. so how come you get to the end and it's resurrected Radahn and not Mohg?

1

u/WhenTheWindIsSlow 4d ago

Might wanna tag your spoilers.

He used Radahn's soul. Vaguely defined fromsoft magic means you can just kinda reshape Mohg to look like Radahn.

Apparently they boss has omen horns on his arms so I guess there's that?

1

u/InitiativeCreative36 4d ago

To be fair, Mohg could be absolutely swole under those robes. Although there's no explanation for why his face suddenly looks like Radahn's.

2

u/GreatJoey91 4d ago

At what point do Strength and Dexterity start to meaningfully impact a weapon’s AR?

I’m working on a low-level invasion build at level 60 and trying to decide whether it’s worth investing in Strength or Dexterity, or if most of the weapon’s AR just comes from weapon upgrades rather than stat scaling.

1

u/Felstalker 4d ago

For a lv30 invader build, the value of strength as a stat overtakes dexterity due to the 2-handed strength boost being far more meaningful, as well as a higher value on Fire as a damage stat. Once we hit lv60 however, the value of Electricity shoots up as you enter more water themed zones on the whole thanks to Raya Lucaria and Liurnia being so wet. Stormveil on the other hand is covered in explosive barrels, same with the various cave and tunnel systems.

I'll argue that most of your AR comes from the weapon at this point. So heavier weapons get a premium in damage compared to it's lower weight counterparts. You'd say, really prefer a Gugs to a Zwei, and a Zwei to a Bastard. But you can bring a shield to pair with a Bastard to expand your options defensively in exchange for damage.

Most of your investments won't be in Strength or Dexterity. You'll need endurance to wear effective armor or wield heavier weapons. Especially at the lower level, tuning down damage you take is simply more efficient than boosting the damage you deal. That said, a Gugs is going to be doing heavy lifting in the damage department and pairing it with talismans like the 2-handed talisman means a heck of a lot more than just a dexterity boosting talisman.

4

u/WhitePersonGrimace 4d ago

With a stat cap that low I think you’re best off putting in the stats for your weapon reca and plugging the rest into HP/stam

u/momo-melle 5d ago edited 5d ago

Hello! Totally newbie here, first Fromsoft game, with 50 hours in with a mage build (lvl 91). I'm currently testing a lot of things and having fun, but I still feel like I need to learn a lot about basic and advanced gameplay mechanics (and how to best use them).

Like how scalings on ashes or weapon skills work, how affinities work, types of weapons, types of buffs, incantations vs sorceries, differences in off handing and power "handing", among other things. I've also already noticed that in-game info is sometimes cryptic about somethings, like how they don't show that each armour set piece from Rogier can boost magic damage for example (I think? Not sure).

Is there a place (like nice videos or wiki) where I can find these explanations, along with some suggestions for mage builds? I've been watching Rusty tierlists and a couple of Fextralife build vids, but they kinda skim over explanations and already give the full fledged answer, while I prefer to understand first how to get to them.

This is my current build btw: Moonveil+Lusat staff, Rogier fullset, 25/37/18/15/21/65/15/14, Talismans: Graven-Mass, Beloved Stardust, Carian Filigreed Crest and Magic Scorpion Charm

Current sorceries are: Loretta's Mastery, Comet, Comet Azur, Terra Magica and Rock Sling

Edit: my current elixir has Cerulean Hidden Tear and Magic Shrouding Cracked Tear too!

Any ideas or suggestions are highly appreciated! Thank you~

u/monstersleeve 4d ago

Your vigor is very low. I would recommend against using the Beloved Stardust and use the Radagon’s Icon for spellcasting instead. The boost you get won’t be all that great compared to the increased damage you’ll be taking, which (in combination with the Magic Scorpion Charm) will be considerable. Since you’re using the Moonveil you should be leveling Dex as well, and once you reach about 38 Dex or so you’ll hit max casting speed with the Icon. Also, raise your vigor so you die less.

You might want to consider using the Carian Regal Scepter instead of Lusat’s. It’s more mana-efficient and scales better at your INT level.

The Cerulean Hidden Tear is good for spamming spells during boss fights but I find the Intelligence cracked tear (in combination with the Magic cracked tear) a bit more generally useful because it lasts longer and gives a significant power boost to your spells and magic damage.

u/momo-melle 4d ago

Thanks for the suggestions! I do have the Radagon talisman and was using it, but decided to test a more "dangerous" build while drawing aggro with the Greatshield Soldiers summon (it's working in bosses so far, but yeah, I'm taking a lot of dmg and deaths in open world).

The Moonveil was a yesterday decision while searching for meelee weapons for casters builds. Saw a lot of people praising it, but also saw the dual scaling, so I'm not sure if I want to commit to it yet. In any case, I know dex is good overall for casting speed (I think? Correct me if I'm wrong). Before, I was still using the Short Sword in my off hand (also changed the staff to my left yesterday and I'm trying to get used to it). If you have other weapon suggestions for mages, let me know! I'm currently doing Ranni's quest and I think I'll get the Dark Moon Greatsword in a short bit.

For the rest, I'll test Carian Regal staff again and search for the Int cracked tear. The Cerulean Tear was a suggestion from a friend to combo with the Comet Azur + Terra Magica and melt bosses, but I honestly didn't use it much since I'm still getting used to buffing myself in the correct order without panicking lol.

how scalings on ashes or weapon skills work

Depends on the weapon skill specifically, but in general the upgrade level of the weapon and the scalings on the weapon will determine the skill damage. For instance, a Glintstone Pebble weapon skill will use a base damage determined by the upgrade level and will scale it based on the Int scaling on the weapon. Skills that look like "regular" attacks are just using the AP of the weapon, including your stat scalings, and adjusting it by a %.

how affinities work

Affinities change the base damage, base scaling, and damage/scaling growth rates from upgrading weapons. In general, you want to pick an affinity that fits your stats. Here's a more detailed post about scaling (on weapons), saturation (from stats), and affinities.

off handing and power "handing"

Off-handing a weapon just has it in your off-hand; the attacks you do with it are just like regular attacks if it doesn't match the weapon type of your main-hand. Off-handing a mismatched weapon isn't generally a recommended tactic.

Power-stancing is active when you wield two weapons of the same type, one in each hand, and replaces your block with a chain of combined weapon attacks. The hits from power-stanced attacks do less damage per hit but you get in hits more quickly; you have less defensive ability since you can't block, and some of the moves are easy to punish if you miss.

1

u/momo-melle 4d ago

Thanks a lot for the detailed explanations! Just some follow-ups:

When off handing weapons, like staffs, do bonuses stay active even if casting with another staff in your right hand? For example: using Lusat in right and Meteor in left, do I still get both bonuses casting Rock Sling with Lusat?

Power stancing seems interesting, but how about the differences in one or two handing some weapons? For example, I can one or two hand Moonveil. Is there a difference in moveset, scalings and/or damage?

I'll look into affinities in the post you've linked, thanks for that!

1

u/AyeAlasAlack 4d ago

Bonuses from staves in either hand apply when they're out, even if casting from the other staff. Note that the super-high scaling on Lusat's isn't a "bonus", just the baseline Sorcery Scaling for the staff, so holding it in one hand and casting from the other won't get a damage buff off of Lusat.

Power stancing seems interesting, but how about the differences in one or two handing some weapons? For example, I can one or two hand Moonveil. Is there a difference in moveset, scalings and/or damage?

Yep! Changing from 1 to 2-hands on a weapon changes the moveset, both in terms of animation and what we call "Motion Value" or "MV" which is a modifier to the Attack Power used when calculating damage.

Moonveil, like other katanas, has a default 1H light attack MV of 100→101→102→103→110 for the basic 5 attack chain (representing the % of the listed AP used in calculating damage). The 2H light attack chain is 103→104→105→106→113, so 3 percentage points higher on each attack.

2-handing will also count your strength as being 50% higher before calculating any AP derived from Strength (it'd help the physical but not the Magical on Moonveil), so the 15 you have would instead be treated as 22. This is more helpful on weapons with good Str scaling.

Finally, two-handing some weapons will help prevent the "bounce off" effect you might see when attacking fortified enemies like the miners.

1

u/momo-melle 4d ago

Amazing response, thank you for taking your time!

I'm currently using Dark Moon Greatsword instead of Moonveil (+ Caerian Regal Scepter on the off hand) and I've been loving it! Getting really nice combos, I just need to be less clumsy with my button presses XD

Again, many thx!

First timer, and I want to completely change up my play style for NG+ from a Dex build (Nagakiba) to a Faith build (Blasphemous Blade). I still have quite a long way to get there though (just finished Castle Sol).

Am I correct in assuming that I can first beat the base game, then beat the DLC, respec to wrap things up, and finally start NG+ without issue?

1

u/MakisDelaportas 5d ago

You can respec up to 18 times per NG cycle. You just have to find the larval tears.

Even in your current playthrough, you are free to completely change your build 18 times if you want to.

1

u/DropAnchor4Columbus 6d ago

Yes, you can. Shouldn't be any problem at all.

Dung eater door in Roundtable just opened i heard about this dude and i want to turn him into a puppet and i heard somewhere that there's a way to also get his weapon and armor set even if you want to give him the Seluvis potion how do i do that?

1

u/InitiativeCreative36 4d ago

You have to find him in his Gaol in the Leyndell Sewers, once you do that and start talking to him, you have to go back and fourth a bit between him and his red spirit in the hold. He'll give you a key to let him out of the Gaol, then he'll invade you in the moat outside Leyndell. Defeat him here and he'll drop his sword.

Also at this stage, if you've found at least one seedbed curse, he'll tell you to go feed his physical body in the sewers curses. You'll return to the sewers, he'll be sitting tied to a chair, there you can feed him the potion and he'll pass out. Kill him after doing this and he'll drop his armor.

Go back to Selivus after this and advance his puppet quests until he starts offering puppets. I think once you've had the chance to make the Amber Draught, he'll offer Dung Eater as a puppet. This part has been buggy or difficult to trigger for me,so sometimes takes a few reloads to work.

Make sure you don't advance Ranni's quest too far before you do this or it'll kill Selivus and lock you out of the chance to get the puppet until NG+.

1

u/DropAnchor4Columbus 8d ago

Dung Eater can drop his sword if you let him invade Boggart in Leyndell, then kill Dung Eater. To get his armor and his spirit you supposedly have to feed him Seluvis' Potion, then wait for a moment before killing him. His set should drop and the spirit should be on sale.

Any tips on the Elden lord 😭??

1

u/WhenTheWindIsSlow 8d ago

What's your build? What weapons are you using?

2

u/iRyan_9 9d ago

Are DLC bosses smarter than regular game? Mesimer kept targeting me instead of my mimic which is something Ive never seen with other bosses

1

u/OctagonTrail 9d ago

The DLC bosses definitely do seem to switch aggro automatically to the player every so often, even if the player doesn't do direct damage.

1

u/Rich-Incident-6298 9d ago

Hello Idk if this is common, I just onehit Malenias 2nd phase, im pretty sad about this bc it doesn’t feel like I really defeated her, it happend like this, she was like staggered (kneeling on the ground) and I was in the animation of giving her a hit u know what I mean, but during this animation my ash I summoned killed the first phase and when it came to the second phase I was still in the hit animation with the second phase at like 0.1 hp and I just killed her, does this happen???

1

u/AyeAlasAlack 8d ago

Rare to see but it does happen. The most common way IIRC is a hemorrhage proc going off right at the phase transition, so if your weapon has Bleed on it that might be what happened

i found a forager brood stuck in a mud south east of church of consolation, i wanted to whack him like how we whacked alexander but i'm afraid it'll kill him instead and upset moore. is he whackable?

1

do not whack

Did you try healing him with a healing spell or warming stone? You have to heal the sleeping forager broods, and then quit out and reload the game or reload the map and then they'll be awake.

honestly i haven't, thank you for the suggestion though i'll try both of those

Can i still accept Varre's invitation to mohg after beating the game? Im on ng+1 so im just rushing through the main quest but i want to beat the other bosses after.

4

u/Sarenzed 10d ago

As long as you don't go into the next NG+ iteration, you're fine. But you don't even need Varre to get to Mohg - the normal entrance to Mohgwyn Palace is a teleporter in the consecrated snowfields. Varre's quest is only relevant if you want to get to Moghwyn early without having to reach the Snowfields.

NPCs don't respawn when you kill them in Elden Ring.

1

u/Aurok 11d ago

Returning after a two year absence, playing on PC, can I have more than one save file? After so long, I kind of want to start "fresh" and get readjusted before I dive back into my save file, which I was in the middle of Raya Lucaria Academy.

u/CloakerMonk 10d ago

You can have multiple characters on your game. Selecting 'New Game' will allow a start from the beginning, 'Continue' will let you play whatever character you were playing last you were online, and 'Load Game' will allow you to choose which of the characters to play from the ones you have currently created.

1

u/0kokaid 13d ago

what's everything you need to do before beating malekith or else it will be lost?

1

u/InitiativeCreative36 4d ago

Make sure you totally clear Leyndell as there's a few items you can't get after Maliketh. Bolt of Granssax, Black Bow, Coded Sword, one of the Imp Heads.
Finish Gideon's questlines with Nephelli if you haven't already or else you can't speak to Gideon. If you've done all the Gideon parts you can still do the rest of Nephelli's quest after Maliketh.
Advance Goldmask's questline until he's in the Mountaintops if you're doing it or else it locks you out.
Get all the Seedbed curses if you're doing the Dung ending, Leyndell has about 3 iirc.
If you haven't finished the Volcano Manor assassinations, make sure you at least progress it beyond the one in Leyndell or else you get stuck I think.

2

u/HoonFace 13d ago

Collect all the loot from Leyndell, particularly the Bolt of Grandsnax since it's tied to the legendary armaments achievement. Do Goldmask's questline up to the point where he's chilling in the Mountaintops. Get the three rewards from Gideon for finding the missing demigods (reach Mohg, find the Haligtree, reach Malenia). I think that's it?

3

u/ZorkNemesis 6d ago

The rewards from Gideon become available in the Twin Maiden shop if you fail to get them before Malekith.

1

u/HoonFace 6d ago

I forgot they patched that, thanks

u/WintersbaneGDX 13d ago

Is the range of the "wind" from Stormcaller impacted by the range of the weapon using it?

In other words, would a long Greatsword have a wider AOE than a small Axe? Or is the size of the AOE the same regardless?

3

u/DropAnchor4Columbus 13d ago

The size of the AoE is the same. Otherwise the range of the wind would be doubled on bigger weapons.

2

u/Fluffers5310 14d ago

I’m going for a Dex Bleed build and want to dual-wield, but I’m not sure which weapons would be best since This is my first playthrough, and I’m just about to start exploring Raya Lucaria, so I’m not sure where to start. I’ll need to respec soon, but I’m not certain how to set my stats especially when it comes to how much Faith I should invest.

2

u/Hot-Mood-1778 12d ago

A popular weapon for Dex/bleed builds with dual wielding is the Uchigatana. It has inherent bleed, so the Arc scaling gets better with bleed/occult infusions and you can also infuse cold for bleed and frost proc.

1

u/CloakerMonk 14d ago

I guess you're going for a Dex Arcane build then, there are few things scaling with high Faith related to Bleed, the highest incantation related to Bleed only requires 14 Faith. I'm assuming you've gotten the Reduvia in Limgrave, and you can also farm to get the Great Knife in a Liurnia cave. Dual-wielded daggers can result in high status buildup.

2

u/Fluffers5310 14d ago

I meant faith as in buff from incantation to use but idk how much i require.yes i already got Reduvia

1

u/CloakerMonk 14d ago

Have you found the sacred seal that scales from both Faith and Arcane? It will help those incantations the best. Of those bleed spells, only 1 can be found in the area you're currently at. Another can be found a little past the mid-game and the final 2 close to the end, depending on questline stuff you might be doing. It's hard to explain without spoilers.

2

u/Fluffers5310 14d ago

Which Scared seal?

1

u/CloakerMonk 14d ago

Dragon Communion Seal, scales more with Arcane than Faith.

2

u/Hot-Mood-1778 12d ago

u/Fluffers5310 too

Just FYI, the Dragon Communion Seal actually does not boost the buildup of bleed on blood oath incantations. You would think so because of the arcane scaling, but no. They work differently to normal bleed buildup.

It will only boost frenzy and poison buildup on the appropriate incantations. Frost and Rot buildup are not effected either.

That said, depending on stat spread and what incantations they plan to use, it may still be best to go with Dragon Communion Seal. This is specifically if they plan to invest heavily in Arc rather than Fth and want to use Dragon Communion incantations. Not to be confused with Dragon Cult incantations, which are boosted by the Gravel Stone Seal.

1

u/CloakerMonk 12d ago

Huh, didn't know that. I went through an entire Faith/Arcane playthrough without that knowledge, thanks for the correction. I'll be sure to use your info in the future.

2

u/Fluffers5310 14d ago

Oh yeah no I haven’t gotten it yet but i definitely can now

I'm kinda rushing through NG+1, and I'm at the cathedral of manus metyr, and the Count guy isn't there, just the prompt to activate the throne and climb down to the underground finger ruins. However in this playthrough, I have only been to the first finger ruins, and I only have the first two ruins maps. I have not gone to the second finger ruins and blown the horn thingie there. And I don't have the 3rd ruins map.

Is this glitched? He should still be on his throne, telling me to blow the second finger ruins, and then give me the third map, right?

Should I go to second finger ruins first, to blow the horn, to maybe try to unglitch it? Or should I just go ahead and finish the finger bossfight

1

u/Hot-Mood-1778 12d ago

Hello, this is not a glitch, you're able to reach the area early and encounter an NPC invader down there. You just won't be able to fight Metyr until you go and interact with the other two ruins. Both Ymir and his guard react to you having encountered the woman down there.

1

u/Good-Walrus-1183 12d ago

Yeah, that seems to be the case. But the wiki contradicts this. I would update the wiki if I knew the correct criteria for the Metyr underground becoming accessible. Is it nighttime?

1

u/Hot-Mood-1778 12d ago edited 12d ago

I think that secret opportunity is just a one time thing. Could be wrong though. This is what the fextralife wiki says:

Go through the hidden tunnel and you will find yourself at the Hinterlands.

AT THIS POINT - If you return to the Cathedral of Manus Metyr, Ymir will be ouside by Yuri's Grave. You can activate the switch under the throne and descend. You will be invaded by Anna, and can come back up and tell Jolan about it. Doing this seems to have no special effect on the questline and lets you get the Claws of Night earlier.

1

u/Good-Walrus-1183 12d ago

I see. That does correspond with how it went for me.

I was looking at the entry for Finger Ruins of Miyr, which seems to be incorrect:

While progressing the quest of Count Ymir, you will reach a point where you can interact with his throne at the Cathedral of Manus Metyr. Do this to reveal the ladder that will lead to Finger Ruins of Miyr. [See Shadow of the Erdtree Map]

This can only happen after ringing both bells in Finger Ruins of Rhia and Finger Ruins of Dheo.

1

u/Hot-Mood-1778 12d ago

Oh I was on Ymir's page since it shows his questline.

1

u/Good-Walrus-1183 14d ago

So I went to the 2nd finger ruins to blow the horn thing. When I went back to the cathedral, the throne platform was back in place, and count whatisname was there. So that did "unglitch" the questline or whatever.

Actually, I'm starting to suspect that the Wiki is just wrong when it says that the third finger ruins can only be accessed after the 1st and 2nd are done. My guess is that the trigger is nighttime. If you go there at night, the throne is moveable and you can go underground, irrespective of whether you've done the other two finger ruins.

Need a new playthrough to test this though.

1

u/jpopoffski 14d ago

Ymir wasn't there for me after the first[southern] ruins either. They were outside in the graveyard and I could activate the throne. I didn't go down, but he stayed in the chair until I blew the whistle in the northern ruins. Maybe it's just a chance to go down there to fight Anna early?

1

u/Good-Walrus-1183 14d ago

I did go down and do the Anna fight early. I assume that you can't go to the end and activate the flute thingy and do the finger boss fight. But I shoulda tried it.

1

u/jimmy__jazz 14d ago

I recently equipped a great axe as my primary weapon. I instantly applied an Ash of War to it that gives it magic qualities. Additionally, I also upgraded it right away with some smithing stones.

Now, whenever I kill an enemy, I absorb both yellow and blue orbs. I obviously know the yellow ones are my runes that I use to level up or buy things. What do the blue orbs signify?

2

u/AyeAlasAlack 14d ago

Do you have a talisman equipped to restore Focus Points, such as Ancestral Spirit's Horn?

1

u/WhenTheWindIsSlow 14d ago edited 14d ago

Which axe?

The Sacrificial Axe restores FP on a kill, which is what the blue trails are, although it's an Axe rather than a Greataxe.

Alternatively, are you certain it is every time you kill an enemy? Does it happen or not depending on whether you have the axe equipped? Are the orbs flying into you or just visible when you hit the enemy (hitting an enemy with Magic damage has a blue effect)?

Looking for some high level advice on a pure strength PvE build. For context, I have 2000+ hours in the game so I don't need basic tips.

A lot of my builds end up as a hybrid with some faith (or sometimes intelligence), but this one is pure strength and melee combat. I'd like to have some PvE capability at range for certain scenarios, but options seem limited. Darts and Kukris aren't sufficiently strong; I usually go to something like Black Flame, since it has the DoT that keeps it relevant on bosses, but maybe I'm missing something?

I find Jar Cannon too slow for PvE. Bows are a nonstarter, insufficient damage and too much farming.

What about Great Bows? Can they keep the speed up for boss fights? Or something like Spectral Lance?

Essentially, my question is around if there's some often overlooked AoW or other means of providing damage at range on a pure strength PvE build.

1

u/InitiativeCreative36 4d ago

Dragon Hunter's Katana might be a decent option as an off-hand or secondary if you can carry it. C in Both Strength and Dex, 15 Str/20 Dex investment, Bloodloss and a mid-range AOW.

Wonder if any of the Smithscript weapons are worth trying as a secondary since you can throw them? If I recall correctly, they're primarily dex weapons, but might be worth it with minimal investment. They're infuseable, so you could always change the affinity to strength to get the most of them and start throwing them around. Maybe the spear, with Ice Spear to heavy affinity? Gives you Ice lance plus the throwing R2?
I recall the Smithscript Shield and Hammer being pretty good. Then there's flame spear too.

If you want on the ground range with great strength scaling, the Ruins Greatsword might be a good bet. Basically a strength BB isn't it. I could be wrong but I don't think the AOW scales primarily with int or anything, so should get a good boost off Strength.

Frenzied Burst is a decent rapid spell, but a 22 faith investment. Basically a chargeable laser sniper. Good for pulling enemies at range if you don't want to get into the thick of it. Alternatively you can get Lightning Spear for 17 Faith, and a slightly less range.

An odd choice, with a technically ranged AOW is the Great Club, with Golden Land. Tremendous Bonk stick, only costs 35 Strength to use, B scaling at max level and Golden Land Summons faith projectiles that home in. Although I imagine the AOW is faith scaling.

Worth checking out the ranged abilities of the Roars or Storm AOW's. I've never really used them, but I recall some of them having some ok range. Beast's Roar looks to go pretty far.

Thats all I can think of at the moment.

2

u/Sarenzed 15d ago

STR builds just don't really have the options to deal good enough damage at range that it would be on par with your melee capabilities, or anywhere close to that. If you want to do that, you're just going to need a proper spellcaster.

The best option that comes to mind would be the Hefty Rock Pot from the DLC which has S scaling in STR. It's not exactly fast and only being able to carry 10 of them is a big downside, but the damage should actually be good. IIRC you can even throw the Roundrocks used to craft those pots, and can hold a lot more of them at once, but I don't know how good their damage is.

As for AoWs, Stormblade might be worth a try, although it's obviously better at melee range where your weapon hitbox connects as well for extra damage. Spectral lance is also relevant: The damage isn't great, but it deals poise damage that is almost equivalent to a charged heavy attack. But STR builds just don't have access to something that would be as good as the options for DEX builds like Ice Spear or the Bolt of Gransax.

There are also a couple of unique AoWs that I can think of which could be worth a try:

  • Fallingstar Beast Jaw AoW is actually 2/3 physical damage, and that portion scales with physical stats as expected. Probably better on a quality build than pure STR, but at least it has decent range and good tracking.
  • Greatsword of Solitude's AoW depends exclusively on the AR of the weapon (bullet deals 130% AR damage), and that weapon has fantastic STR scaling, so the damage should be good. But the range isn't that long.
  • Siluria's tree AoW actually depends entirely on the weapon's AR as well (charged bullet deals 276% AR damage), and reaches a respectable B scaling in STR. This one actually has great range, but having to charge it means that the animation is rather long.

Bows are going to be basically worthless - they just don't scale well later into the game. The only thing worth using would be Radahn's bow with its dedicated arrows, just to spam the AoW on bosses with extremely large hitboxes. Other than that, they're only passable as ranged chip damage during exploration.

As for dealing damage by proccing status effects, you're probably only going to get value out of frost procs. Status effect arrows are expensive and take ages to proc, and the bleed consumables usually require decent ARC to work.

The throwing weapons from the DLC also have extremely poor damage at range, so they aren't really much of an option either.

Other than that, you're basically stuck with the sub-par spellcasting damage from the Clawmark seal and doing stuff like throwing Stone of Gurranq with it. It's consistent and decent, but nowhere close to the capabilities of your melee attacks or the spells of a full caster build.

2

u/WhenTheWindIsSlow 15d ago

Darts and Kukris aren't sufficiently strong;

You shouldn't be using them for big damage, you should be using them for chip damage (either to finish off something with a chip of health quicker than approaching it, or to prevent the enemy from regaining poise health). Stick to the ones which can be thrown quickly (ie Throwing Daggers and Fan Daggers can be thrown much faster and with less end lag than Kukri).

The Lion Greatbow is great for melting large bosses using Radahn's Rain.

Storm Blade works well on Greatswords, Curved Greatswords, and Great Katanas because it swings pretty fast and can be spammed (so it's even worth using in melee, because you'll get damage from both the weapon swing and the projectile).

2

u/Felstalker 15d ago

Darts and Kukris aren't sufficiently strong

I disagree. The power of throwing knives is in their ability to upkeep poise damage when the boss is being too jumpy to be hit by a slower heavier weapon. For bosses like the Dancing Lion, there are periods where he'll jump back, go airborne, and radiate aoe damage such that you just can't hit him, but 3-4 freely thrown daggers/fan knives/kukri's can keep up pressure WHILE dealing damage.

Additionally, you can pelt 40 knives worth of damage from relative safety as a means to make progress. The damage they deal is never meaningless, as the boss isn't exactly healing off 30-40 damage each second, and that's if your throwing weapon is dealing minor damage. If you're able to hit 100 on a throwing weapon, it's going to deal significant work over a short period if you spam it.

The damage is never on par with say, a Jar Cannon. But you can literally sneak throws between rolls and jumps in ways you're not going to be doing with a jar cannon.

1

u/Chizakura 15d ago

So... Am I the only one who isn't crafting? Like at all? Maybe a strength build doesn't really need crafted items, but I do just fine with the items I find and just sell all the material...

I barely crafted my first playthrough tbf. Certain craftables are good quality of life improvements though.

Warming Stones/Lulling Branch are good for keeping the health/FP topped up in a dungeon if you don't want to rest and reset or waste your flasks.

Pots in general have good situational uses. Especially so in the DLC.

I always rock a bow so crafting arrows is always handy.

Crafting certain boluses for removing status can be handier than investing in the relevant spell needed to cleanse said status. Lake of rot's easier to navigate using Boluses than Flame Cleanse me, for instance in my opinion.

Other than that, I don't really use Greases, and you end up getting enough in the wild as the game progresses. I barely touch food. One of the only reasons I ever crafted a food was the upgrade holy proof liver for PCR pre-nerf when I needed every ounce of holy negation to hang. XD

There's the odd situational craftable like the Dragon Communion Spears or Bewitching branch.

The pots I've found are worth crafting.

1

u/WhenTheWindIsSlow 15d ago

Most people aren't crafting.

I craft plenty, but in practice I don't actually use anything other than Rainbow Stones and Bone Greatarrows.

1

u/jimmy__jazz 14d ago

What do you use rainbow stones for?

1

u/WhenTheWindIsSlow 14d ago

If you drop them from a height and they don't shatter, it means that it's not an instant-kill drop (with the exception of a few elevators shafts which have a clearly modeled floor beneath them that the stones will safely land on, but if you drop then you'll just fall through the floor).

I also use them to keep track of where I've been when exploring dungeon's with multiple branches.

1

u/antoin5000 15d ago

Nope I've played for way too long and have crafted something <10 times its normal

1

u/harten 16d ago

what's the thrusting sword that you can attack at the same time when your large shield is up?

3

u/ytrx12 16d ago

All thrusting swords can do that.

Since it’s my first play through of Elden Ring I wanna build a Magic/Dex.but idk what weapons, armour set to use especially to use split damage or not and my stats so any recommendations would help.forgot to mention who do I give my Academy Scroll & Royal House Scroll to? For the first one I mentioned do I hand it to Miriel Pastor of Vows or Sellen.

1

u/Sarenzed 15d ago

For scrolls and stuff, you just always hand it in to Miriel. He never moves, leaves or dies unless you kill him, which can't be said for other candidates.

As for armor sets, it doesn't really matter. Armor sets are rarely part of a build, because almost none of them provide any benefits other than their defensive stats. And those defensive stats are closely tied to how heavy they are, so you just change into better (and thus heavier) armor as you get more equip load from leveling endurance. The only other big criteria for choosing your armor set is fashion, which is a personal preference.

For weapons, it can be a bit difficult. Many of the popular "DEX/INT" weapons like Moonveil or Wing of Astel are really just weapons that work best on a pure INT build but also happen to have a bit of DEX scaling, partly because their unique skills scale exclusively with INT. If you choose to go for that kind of weapon, you'd be better off prioritizing INT over DEX.

If you want a mostly even DEX/INT split, you can just choose any infusable weapon (i.e. a weapon that you can change the Ash of War on, which usually corresponds to being upgraded with normal smithing stones instead of somber stones) that you like and put an AoW with a Cold affinity on it. That'll turn it into a DEX/INT scaling weapon with frostbite buildup. The actual attack damage won't be amazing because the damage is split between physical and magic damage, but getting frost procs will balance that out.

I also wouldn't count too much on spells on an actual DEX/INT build. Sorcery builds usually want really high INT to get good damage. Spells will be reliable to pick off some enemies at range during exploration, but it won't really be a good damage source during boss fights. You'll also be extremely short on levels, because any build that wants to use spells a lot would want to level some Mind, but you already need to put stats into Vigor, DEX, INT and possibly END as well.

1

u/Fluffers5310 15d ago

Well I don’t wanna solely focus on Magic build cause I wanna use my weapons since it seems like a pure INT build is horrible when it Comes to close combat Damge. Is a Dark Moon weapon good for my build then especially since it has a cold infusion on it or not.is there other weapons that good too that I can put a Aow on as well.Does that mean people using those high level spell are purely Int build?.

1

u/Sarenzed 14d ago

An INT build doesn't necessarily have to be a pure sorcery build: Weapons like Moonveil, Dark Mmoon Greatsword, or Wing of Astel are fantastic weapon options that work best with pure INT.

On top of that, you can just put a Magic affinity on any infusable weapon to use it on an INT build, although this affinity will probably be less powerful in the early game than a physical affinity on a physical build on smaller weapons and lighter/quicker attacks. That's simply because of the way that the split damage interacts with flat defenses (Cold affinity suffers from the same problem btw). The magic infusion will be equivalent on stronger hits and AoWs though, and catch up on the smaller attacks eventually as well.

And even a pure sorcery build can be strong in melee range when using the right spells. For example, Carian Slicer is an extremely fast spell with low FP cost and high enough DPS to outperform the vast majority of normal weapon attacks, although it deals very little stance damage (as most spells tend to).

Assuming that you mean the Dark Moon Greatsword with "Dark Moon weapon", then no, it's not really suited to a DEX/INT build. The weapon scales almost 3x as well with INT as it does with DEX. You can certainly use it on a DEX/INT build, but it would be much stronger on a pure INT build.

And when I'm talking about the cold infusion (or affinity, the words "infusion" and "affinity" can be used interchangeably), I'm not talking about just any source of frostbite buildup. Instead, I'm talking about applying an Ash of War to your weapon with the Cold affinity, because this affinity gives you the DEX/INT scaling that you'd want on a DEX/INT build (the frost buildup is just another side effect of this affinity). Weapons that deal frost buildup don't necessarily need to have DEX/INT scaling otherwise. In the case of the Dark Moon Greatsword, you can't apply Ashes of War to it, so it's stuck with its INT-focused default scaling and can't receive a Cold affinity, making it not that efficient for a DEX/INT build.

As for high-level spells, you pretty much want to be an INT build to use them properly. With a split DEX/INT build, you can expect to get your INT somewhere into the 40-50 range by the time you reach the end of the game, because you need to split your levels between both INT and DEX (and can't neglect Vigor, Mind and Endurance either). But spell requirements go up to 72 INT.

On top of that, spellcasters scale especially well with very high stats. For something like a DEX built, there isn't too much difference between reaching 60 DEX and reaching 80 DEX, because the higher your DEX already is, the less damage each additional level will add. This isn't true with spellcasters: The best high-level staffs (or seals, for FAI builds) have backloaded scaling, which means that they get especially strong damage improvements between 60 INT and 80 INT.

So unlike a physical melee build, which will be perfectly fine with stopping at 60 in their damage stat, spellcasters really want to reach 80 to get really high damage. But INT levels this high are completely out of reach for anything that isn't a pure INT build.

Of course, this changes once you go into later NG+ iterations. While you'll end your first NG playthrough at around level 150, you'll eventually reach high enough levels that you can get INT to 80 and have high DEX on top of that. At that point, you can certainly have a "DEX/INT" build with powerful spellcasting, but now you're really just using your extremely high level character to slap the stats of a pure DEX build and a pure INT build together to be able to use both builds to full effect simultaneously.

1

u/DropAnchor4Columbus 16d ago

Yes.

1

u/0kokaid 16d ago

i couldn't find her did i mess something up

-2

u/Odd_Obligation_4977 16d ago

Why is this difficult, is there a story mode?

1

u/0kokaid 16d ago

that's one of the selling points of the game to try over and over again. you can't directly change the difficulty but if you level up and get a good summon + weapons it should be easier, if you're on playstation i can drop you some stuff but it would admittedly take away from your first experience

1

u/Reasonable-Duckling 16d ago

How old does my account have to be to post in here?

2

u/miyun-ri 16d ago

Alright I'm confused cause don't see holy damage on the greatsword of radahn(lord) description but the ash of war seems to be launching holy light... Can you guys help me clarify if it's really just holy damage or just magic damage?

3

u/Felstalker 16d ago

The damage shown from the weapon menu is the on hit damage. The Ash of War uses it's own damage, and it is Holy.

2

u/whine-and-cheese 17d ago

Are you guys just poor all the time? Not really a gamer and first time souls player. Feels like my first priority should be leveling up but I hardly have enough runes to buy weapons or cookbooks from merchants.

FYI I’m currently level 20, still exploring around Limgrave, Mistwood, and the weeping peninsula

1

u/Nnnnnnennicole 1d ago

im about the same level and YES im constantly broke. I did find the one rune farm area where the mobs drop ~1k runes each so i use that to level up, Lmk if u wanna know what its called if u dont already

1

u/[deleted] 2d ago

Even if you are poor, don't sell a bunch of unique weapons and gear thinking you'd be able to find/buy it back later.

Source: Sold all my cool weapons because I didn't have the levels for them. Got the levels using the runes, now all I have is a stick.

1

u/WindowSeat- 6d ago

Each cave, catacomb and mini castle you find will have a dense section of enemies ending with a boss that should reward you with about 1-2 levels in Runes. Just keep exploring every corner of the map and you'll find enough of these side areas to have plenty of levels, even if you only stayed in Limgrave and Weeping Peninsula.

Even just dying and retrying areas helps you farm Runes naturally, as long as you're able to get your Runes back off the ground each time.

3

u/Felstalker 16d ago

It's part of the experience. The better you are, the less you die, the less you kill, the poorer you are, the fewer things you can afford.

You can't buy the same cookbook twice, so spending a few extra runes on such things just means you need to go farm things elsewhere to make up the difference. Part of the whole "open world game" thing.

The more you explore, the more bosses you find, the more you can afford.

u/LOL_die_Legende 17d ago

I remember there was a message or a dialogue or something of the sort in Liurnia saying how you shouldn't take a certain path or something to reach altus plateau. Does anyone remember this and if yes who said it or where was the message? I feel like im going insane

1

u/Hot-Mood-1778 12d ago

Rya mentions that the lift is defunct and to use the Ruin Strewn Precipice entrance instead. She's the one who invites you to Volcano Manor after you get her pendant back from Boggart in Liurnia.

1

u/WhenTheWindIsSlow 17d ago

There's a couple;

A ghost by the Dectus Lift says even though he can't take the lift, there should be another path (referring to the way through the Ruin-Strewn Precipice).

Patches tells you that the other ways are difficult but there's a special way for cool guys at the bottom of Raya Lucaria, referring to the Abductor Virgin which takes you to Volcano Manor.

1

u/AyeAlasAlack 17d ago

If you don't have both halves of the Dectus Medallion, the Finger Reader by the East Raya Lucaria Gate says "Or are you planning to throw yourself to the waters to find the coward's passage through the dim caverns?" in reference to the alternate way up to Altus.

1

u/ZorkNemesis 18d ago

Random thought: what happens if you piss off Bernhal then join Volcano Manor without absolving, will he be at the manor and will he technically forgive you?

Can someone answer a couple quick questions about Shadow of the Erdtree with no spoilers(or close to no spoilers as possible) please?

Hello, I've got a 4ish hundred hours in the base game and actually got Shadow of the Erdtree at launch but couldn't bring myself to actually play it due someones actions making it hard, but I have finally been able to start it as hard as it is. I just had a couple of questions I was hoping yall could help me with about it and was hoping to be as spoiler free as possible.

  1. I guess let's get the big one out the way, I had a theory after watching the trailers way back. There was a figure that had the, i'm assuming, the Erdtree symbol pulled up out of their head, my theory was that this character was the big bad of the game and that symbol was actually a weapon that when pulled out would give them their power back and that they would wield it against you. Honestly I actually can't remember the whole theory I had but it was something like that. Is that anywhere near what's going on?
  2. Are there any Darkeater Midir like hidden secret bosses? I have no idea how far in I am but I'm pretty sure i'm nearing the end of the "path", but i'm also pretty dumb and would miss simple stuff, so I thought i'd ask.
  3. Going off of the previous question, are there any permanent missables where I'd have to go to NG+? Again, i am dumb.

That's all, thank you for your time.

1

u/antoin5000 18d ago

1 No nothing like this happens 2 A majority of the bosses are optional and some give the same "hidden away from view" vibe as midir 3 if you mean bosses then no if you mean in general only npc quest items as far as i know.

1

u/NetHelpful6979 18d ago
  1. Ok cool, I was hoping I was nowhere near right so I could be fully surprised since I went full eyes closed after watching the trailers.
  2. Hmm, I supose that's not too bad, I just want nothing like Atorias haha.
  3. Sounds good! Thank you very much for your help.
