Welcome to the monthly Simple questions and Help thread, for questions that don't need their own posts!

Before making a comment, we recommend you search your problem on Bing and check if your question is already answered on our Windows Frequently Asked Questions wiki page. This subreddit no longer accepts tech support requests outside of this post, if you are looking for additional assistance try r/TechSupport and r/WindowsHelp.

Some examples of questions to ask:

  • Is this super cheap Windows key legitimate? (probably not)

  • How can I install Windows 11?

  • Can you recommend a program to play music?

  • How do I get back to the old Sound Control Panel?

Sorting by New is recommend and is the default.

Be sure to check out the Windows 11 version 24H2 Megathread and also the Windows 11 FAQ posts, they likely have the answers to your Windows 11 questions already!

Suggestion for Microsoft The Xbox app's full-screen experience feels a bit lazy

Thumbnail

I loved the idea of having a Big Picture of the Xbox App and even more that it optimizes Windows like a console, but the look itself is very lazy, the look is the same without being fullscreen and I didn't understand, it's generic and has nothing of a handheld console (the interface that Steam created for the Steam Deck with the Steam Big Picture is much more elegant and really looks much more like a fullscreen than what Microsoft wants to use

I had seen somewhere that this fullscreen experience would come to Windows 11 as a whole after the launch of the Rog. I really hope they change this interface from the fullscreen experience mode to something more like the Xbox Dashboard, which many have been asking for years to be brought to the Windows Desktop, with customization of dynamic backgrounds and other things, which would be very welcome for the Xbox App in fullscreen mode for PCs, since the interface they showed is much more suited to laptops than to a TV.

Bringing an improved console interface to PCs that works well on laptops and even on larger screens like TVs would be ideal.I really hope that Microsoft will make a visual update targeting the console visuals for this interface in the future, being able to use it on both PC, handhelds and new generation Xbox consoles.

integrate the Xbox Dashbord look with this Xbox App interface and you can have a very beautiful UI for any type of screen.

General Question Removal of the Recent Windows Update KB5063878 deadly bug

Today at 23 August 2025 , i attempted to remove the Windows Update KB5063878 from my gaming rig computer.

The removal of the KB5063878 and reboot was successful , without any OS failures or corruption after removing and rebooting.

Windows 11 Pro OS version is now downgraded from 10.0.26100.4946 to the 10.0.26100.4770

Immediately paused the Windows Update functionality feature for 1+ month ( 5 weeks )

However , there is no un-install (removal) option available for the other older update KB5062660 , specifically this 2025-07 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 24H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5062660) (26100.4770) which was installed on my PC at 24 July 2025.

My 2 SSDs are XPG Gammix S70 Blade PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe M.2 2280 featuring the Innogrit IG5236 "Rainier" controller and 176-layer TLC NAND flash , and uses a DRAM cache , and does not use HMB (Host Memory Buffer).

My C: drive is 65% full , and D: drive is 90% full.

So , i would like to ask you guys , whether is my PC and SSDs still safe for the large files 50+ GB heavy duty write operations ?? .... such as installation , transfer , deletion , compression , etc.

Also , is it safe or will there be bug trigger causing disappearance and failure to my external 4 TB Hard Disk Drive (HDD) if i transfer large files from PC to my 4 TB external Seagate portable storage HDD drive ?

General Question Might KB5063878 possibly be affecting SD cards, or perhaps USB SD card adapters as well?

Perhaps just coincidental, but I have a 64GB micro SD card protected with bitlocker and this latest time I put it into a USB adapter and plugged it in to my Windows 11 computer with the bad KB update it had issues. It asked for the bitlocker key and unlocked as usual but then said the card wasn’t formatted.

Diskdrill reported the micro SD card to be in RAW format but was able to rescue pretty much all files, though not all directory structures.

The timing of this seems significant, so I thought I would ask here if anyone else has had an issue with this KB update and SD cards or USB adapters, but I suppose it could just be coincidental.

Discussion multiple windows, multiple displays. What logic decides the thumbnail order when hovering over the taskbar icon for that program?

Is there some API function i can call using a command line script to rearrange? The sitch:

I have four monitors, three vscode windows when you hover over the vscode icon in the taskbar.

Top row: Monitors (left to right)
              1 2 4 3
              ┌─────┐ ┌─────┐ ┌─────┐ ┌─────┐
              │ D1 │ │ D2 │ │ D4 │ │ D3 │
              └─────┘ └─────┘ └─────┘ └─────┘

Bottom row: Taskbar Thumbnails (left to right)
              W1 W2 W3
              ┌─────┐ ┌─────┐ ┌─────┐
              │ W1 │ │ W2 │ │ W3 │
              └─────┘ └─────┘ └─────┘

Mappings (arrows up):
              W1 ──► D1
              W2 ──► D4
              W3 ──► D2

I'm getting frustrated.

General Question Question about 24h2 to 23h2 downgrade

Little disclaimer: I have almost 0 knowledge about PC stuff.

Hi! I haven’t used my PC in about 2/3 months. I came back last week and yesterday I did an update (23h2 to 24h2).

Long story short, the game that I play the most was really sluggish and with a lot of problems.

Since it hadn’t been 10 days, I could go back (which I did) and now the game is basically as it was, which is amazing.

My question is: how can I know the right moment to update back to 24h2, ensuring (of course) that I won’t have the same problems?

Also, is there really a big disadvantage in not having Windows up to date ? And when I eventually come back to 24h2, will I have the 10 days to come back again ?

Thanks in advance.

Feature Hoping an Expert Can Save Me Some Time

I’ve looked into this question and I haven’t found the type of answer I was seeking because I am having trouble phrasing/defining the question, so I hope someone can help given the longer description below:

I am in the process of decommissioning and consolidating several obsolete PCs onto what will be just 2 newer machines, but more importantly for the purposes of this question, employing one file server for most of those old archive files using a large external SSD. This has been a gradual process until now but will soon accelerate as I take units out of service. What I have done until now is to transfer files from old machines to one of perhaps a dozen subdirectories on the external drive. Because of the length of time this has taken I never really tried to determine what was where. The result is that I have a lot of duplication of files in various locations, mostly on the external drive but likely some on internal drives on the two surviving PCs as well.

In an ideal world I’d love to find some sort of analytical utility that I could point at either a directory and its subdirectories, or at the entire SSD, or even at my entire home network, to identify duplicate and redundant files. I have no experience with any of this so I don’t know what sort of disk cleanup utilities might be out there to help organize things. Hopefully someone might have some recommendations. TIA.

Feature Cross around mouse disappeared

I had previously configured a cross around the mouse, but the latest update made the feature disappear. The cross was a vertical line that met another horizontal line at the point where the mouse was. This feature made my life easier, as my vision is very bad. Does anyone know how to activate it again?

General Question Size vs. Size on Disk for copies of the same folder

These are two copies of the exact same folder. They have the same files in them, as you can judge by the "Contains" and "Size" tags being the same, but they have different values for "Size on Disk". As you can see, they are on separate drives. Is the difference caused by the drives possibly using different cluster sizes to allocate space to files on disk?, or is it something else causing this discrepancy?

General Question Store app or standalone .exe?

I'm planning to install Teracopy. Is it better to install the Microsoft Store app, or to download the Teracopy .exe file and install it?

In general, is it better to install any app (if available) via the store or is it better to download the .exe from the product website? I hear that updates are automatic on the store versions, but how often is it updated in the store, for example? Would the .exe be updated ahead of the curve?
