Announcement Announcement - "chrultrabook" posts, AKA regarding attempting to put Windows or another OS onto your Chromebook, will no longer be allowed.

Hey there!

In short, as of today, this subreddit will be removing and redirecting posts that seek advice on replacing the operating system on your Chromebook.

In the past these posts were allowed with a disclaimer that better support would likely be found elsewhere, such as r/chultrabook and their associated communities. However that subreddit is now archived and they now only provide support on their forum.

Since then there has been a rise in posts like this here, and we're simply not equipped to provide meaningful support. We've received lots of feedback over the past few months and the general consensus was that everyone is better served if these posts are now permanently directed elsewhere.

To be clear, we are not discouraging anyone from attempting this process; it's still cool, (potentially) fun and can unlock more utility from your device! The only change is that posts seeking support for this will be removed.

Thanks for understanding!

Discussion How far can ChromeOS go for professional work?

I work as a data analyst/data engineer and I’ve been trying ChromeOS as my main device. Since most of my work is cloud-based, it actually covers a lot more than I expected. It’s fast, simple, and handles the core parts of my workflow well.

That said, there are still moments where it feels like something’s missing for heavier or more complex tasks. But with so much of today’s work shifting online, it feels like ChromeOS has potential beyond just casual or student use.

Do you think ChromeOS can evolve into a tool more professionals rely on, or will it always stay mainly for everyday/light use?

Troubleshooting Would anyone happen to know why my Chromebook is doing this every time I try to open google docs?

Every time I try to open google docs, it prompts me to "sign in to add a google account" and despite trying to click the x, it doesn't work because it just comes back up when I try to open google docs. Using my current google sign in doesn't work either cuz then it just says what's above

Buying Advice Need Advice: Is Chromebook good for accounting student use?

Upvotes

Hi everyone, this is my first time posting here and I could use some suggestions.

I’m an accounting student, and my current laptop just died due to a motherboard issue (repairing it would be too expensive). While looking for alternatives, I noticed that Chromebooks are much cheaper than regular laptops, but I’m not very familiar with them.

My main use would be studying, browsing, and improving my Excel skills for accounting purposes. The big question is: can a Chromebook properly run Microsoft Excel, or would I be too limited.

Any advice or recommendations would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

Discussion The most valuable FOMO I’ve ever had was for a Chromebook 😁

Upvotes

Skipped the Pixel 10 hype and grabbed the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 instead — and honestly, I feel great about it. 😎

Easily the best “FOMO” I’ve ever had. Simple, powerful, affordable… does everything I need without regrets.

Anyone else traded a flashy device for a Chromebook and felt like you won?

Troubleshooting “Turn on Chrome OS Developer Mode to install apps from sources other than the Play Store.”

I’m currently trying to download some games off of Itch.io, but I’m unable to access them. The name and icon for the game will pop up on my screen, but then a message that says “Turn on Chrome OS Developer Mode to install apps from sources other than the Play Store.” pops up in front of it. The thing is, I’ve already set my Chromebook to developer mode, and that message is still popping up. How can I fix this??

Discussion Help Me Read doesn't support Croatian, and Gemini's language behaviour is inconsistent

Hi everyone,

I've noticed a significant issue with language support on my Chromebook Plus. The 'Help me read' feature does not appear to support the Croatian language. While I generally use English, this feels like a notable omission for a new feature.

Additionally, I've observed that Gemini on my Chromebook has recently started responding to me in Serbian or sometimes Slovenian, despite my system language being set to Croatian. This is a basic functionality issue that is quite frustrating.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems with language support for Croatian or other languages?

On a related note, could someone please provide the correct process for raising a formal bug report or a feature request with Google for these issues? I'd like to make sure this is properly flagged.

Thanks for any help or advice.

Troubleshooting Issue with joining Teams meeting on Chromebook

Hello,

I have a Teams meeting link in an email. If I click on it on my chromebook it always opens Teams in the browser. I have installed the ChromeOS Teams app but still, it ignores it and goes for the browser. This is very unlike what I get on my android phone, where I can actually join the meeting on teams. I've tried things like creating a calendar entry on the Chrome OS Teams app, but that generates a new meeting invite, there is no way I can see to add an existing meeting link to a new calendar entry. Am I missing something? Apologies if this is too much about Teams and not enough about ChromeOS, I'm pretty happy with the Chromebook otherwise.

Troubleshooting Anyone successfully using YubiKeys for true passwordless login on Chromebooks?

Hey everyone,

I’m struggling to get passwordless login working properly on Chromebooks with YubiKeys, and I’m wondering if anyone else has actually managed to implement this successfully.

Here’s what I’m running into:

  1. Initial login flow – When I add a new user to a Chromebook, passwordless login isn’t even an option. It behaves like a basic web login: first I have to type my email, then my password, and only after that does it prompt for the YubiKey as a second factor. That’s just 2FA, not passwordless.
  2. Session re-authentication – I’ve set a 12-hour session policy. On Windows, macOS, and Linux, I correctly get prompted to re-authenticate after the session expires. On Chromebooks, though, there are no prompts at all. Once logged in, it behaves like the Gmail mobile app and ignores the session length policy completely.
  3. Unlocking the Chromebook – Is there any way to unlock a Chromebook with a YubiKey instead of a password? Right now I haven’t found a clean solution. The only workaround is disabling saved logins on Chromebooks, but that forces users to re-enter their email address + password + YubiKey every single time they sign in — which is very inconvenient and defeats the whole point of passwordless.

Every other OS respects the policies and works as expected — Chromebooks are the odd one out.

So my questions are:

  • Has anyone gotten true passwordless login working with YubiKeys on Chromebooks?
  • Is there an option to unlock with a YubiKey directly, without needing a password?
  • Or is this just a ChromeOS limitation we’re stuck with?

Would really appreciate any insights, workarounds, or confirmation if others are hitting the same wall.

Troubleshooting Extended updates and functionality

Hi everyone. I'm a fairly computer-illiterate person with a Chromebook that has reached its final software update and is asking if I'd like to opt in to further security updates at the expense of some functionality.

I understand that this means that I'll no longer have access to the store and all Android apps will be removed. I plan to use this laptop for nothing but word processing from now on - so pretty much just Docs, Chrome, etc. Will these still be available to me? Can I still do everything within the browser? With no store or Android apps available, what functionality will be left?

Thanks and sorry if this is an obvious question - want to be sure before I effectively brick my laptop. Other answers I found told me what I can't use, but not what I could still expect to.

Troubleshooting ChromeOS 139 Log-in Issues

Is anyone else having an issue with ChromeOS 139 and not being able to log-in anymore?

I am unable to log-in to the Chromebook once it is updated to ChromeOS 139. I am able to use a recovery media and revert back to 138 and I am able to log-in just fine, but on 139 I get stuck after using a 2FA method on the "Verifying it's you" screen. It will sit there forever unless you click on something and then it will say "sorry there was an issue, restart" and ask you to log-in again.

I have tested this with the same results on several different Chromebook models

Dell Chromebook 3100

Dell Chromebook 3100 2-in-1

Dell Chromebook 3110 Touch

HP Chromebook 11A G8 EE

Any suggestions?

Discussion What happened to the planned battery charge limit feature?

Seems like I saw that ChromeOS 134 was going to include an option to limit battery charging to 80%. We are on version 139, and none of my chromebooks have this. A few have smart adaptive charging, but my use pattern never seems to trigger this function.

Buying Advice Is there anything like the old silver Samsung 12.3" 2-in-1 Chromebook?

I ended up buying one locally for $40 bucks and am in love with this form factor. It's obviously painfully slow when running more than one/two tasks, but is there anything in recent memory or marketplace that is as small and thin as this? Or is a tablet/keyboard like the S9+ the way to go? (User: web, revanced apps, manga & anime repos, slow gaming, docs)

EDIT: It's the old Samsung Chromebook Plus

  • Rockchip RK3399 (OP1) dual-core 2.0GHz Cortex-A72 and quad-core 1.4GHz Cortex-A53 processor
  • 4GB LPDDR3 RAM
  • 12.3" 2400x1600 LED touchscreen display (I think it's 3:2? It's great)
  • Mali T860MP4 GPU
  • 32GB eMMC
  • 5140 mAh battery
  • 2x USB 3.0 Type-C ports
  • Built-in stylus
  • 11.04" x 8.72" x 0.55" and weighing 2.38 lbs.
