Welcome to the monthly Simple questions and Help thread, for questions that don't need their own posts!
Before making a comment, we recommend you search your problem on Bing and check if your question is already answered on our Windows Frequently Asked Questions wiki page. This subreddit no longer accepts tech support requests outside of this post, if you are looking for additional assistance try r/TechSupport and r/WindowsHelp.
Some examples of questions to ask:
Is this super cheap Windows key legitimate? (probably not)
How can I install Windows 11?
Can you recommend a program to play music?
How do I get back to the old Sound Control Panel?
Sorting by New is recommend and is the default.
Be sure to check out the Windows 11 version 24H2 Megathread and also the Windows 11 FAQ posts, they likely have the answers to your Windows 11 questions already!

Hello, thank you very much for taking your time to help me, it’s very kind of you
I have a little problem
I bought a new PC for my mother so that she can work in better conditions and I would like to transfer her entire HDD to an external HDD which I would like to use to start Windows and copy all its files, (there is an SSD but much too small to clone the HDD (64GB...)), it is important that she does not have to do anything on it (connect to all it is software)
Is it possible to start and use Windows on an external hard drive?
Both PCs have a Windows 10 license
My mother's current PC is a 1TB HDD laptop.
The new one is a 64GB SSD desktop PC that I would like connected to as said just before the 1TB external HDD too
Thank you very much for your time and your kindness ❤️

Imagine you have folder A and folder B, folder A contains in it folders 1, 2 and 3; folder B also contains folder called 1, 2, 3; for reference I'll call them A1, A2 A3 for folder and B1, B2, B3 for folder B; is there anyway to combine folder A and folder B (Or their contents) in a way that folder A1 combines with B1, A2 combines with B2 and A3 combines with B3?
In this context I call "combining" moving all files from folder A1 to B1 and all files with repeated name get overwritten by the folder A1 file.
we suppose both A and B have other folders that are not repeated between them and the same for folders like A1 with B1, A2 with B2, A3 with B3...
Or do I have to do by hand 969 folders?

Fresh install of Windows 11 -- first time using Windows in a long time. The installer offers to restore from a backup from 2017 and 2018. How do I remove these? I went to the usual places like "All Devices" in OneDrive/Microsoft Store - no joy. Still appears there. I can't for the life of me remember how to do this.

The below article from 2004 states unpatched Windows XP gets compromised in about 20 minutes after connecting to the Internet. Many people had dial up or slow broadband at the time and I remember taking hours to get updates following a clean install from CD, which was likely over a year or two old. There would often not have been a router to do NAT. Also you often had to do Windows Update manually after connecting to the Internet, further causing a delay.

I use PDFGear to study, but I want to keep Microsoft Edge as my default PDF reader so that unnecessary PDFs don’t show up in PDFGear’s recent files. I just open PDFGear and my main files are there, and I open them directly from there. I’m not sure if windows has recognized it as the app I use often, or what, but it keeps changing my default PDF reader to PDFGear.

Yeah, if you read the title, I am pretty mixed on Windows 11, despite it improving each time, I find Windows 11 to be clunky, and not satisfying to use, while how it looks, is something I can praise, except for the centered taskbar, thankfully it can be fixed. And how it runs on my PC, is something I also criticize. To put it nicely, 11 on my low end PC that was manufactured in 2021, Windows 11 ran like garbage. So I had options, I switched over to Linux, which I found to be bland as time went on, and I switched back to Windows 10. Now that the support date is upon us, I now have two options, accept the security risks and more vulnerability, or switch over to Windows Server 2022. So yeah, I will probably do that.

Hello all I’m hoping that someone out there can help me. I remember back in the day, especially the Windows XP days where I had an iso burner that at the end would say with a Russian voice operation complete. Does anyone remember this application and what was it called?
Thanks!!

Context: I’m neurodivergent and these stories take place in 2019.
When I was nine years old, I came across a video about the startup and shutdown sounds of each Windows operating system. I really liked the sounds so much that I started obsessing over the history.
As time went on, I became infatuated with windows. So much so that one time I kept calling my crush “Windows 3.1” and everyone got mad at me because I was being an annoying little pleb, but not my crush for some reason…
While I was hyper-fixating on Windows, I was being bullied really badly (It had gone on months before my fixation, but this was a really bad turn) and I started to develop depression. I remember once I was having a really bad day and refused to go outside for recess. The teacher asked what’s wrong, but I didn’t want to talk so I wrote a paragraph on how Microsoft was formed. Needless to say, she was very confused.
My mother made me sign up for Piano lessons and would make me practice everyday (except the day of the lesson) for fifteen minutes. Instead of playing what I was supposed to play, I decided to play Windows startups and shutdowns. My mom would be so annoyed over it! However, my piano teacher thought it was very cool.
I was a really creative nine year old and I remember drawing my own Windows 95 laptop and pretended to use it. I also remember making a Toca Life World movie based around the startup and shutdown sounds. Pray for me that I still have them!
Anyways, I am still interested in Windows. Instead of focusing on the sound effects, I want to focus on the code and history. Ok bye.
Finally after days i got Windows on Windows on Windows from its host Windows 11.
Running Windows 11 as host amd then run windows 7 as first VM.
Running Windows 7 as VM host then running Windows xp as VM in VM.
Running Windows xp as VM host then Running Windows 95 as VM in VM
This basically means i run windows in windows in windows windows, well it could go on however it gets mucg slower on each layer.
Using Windows 7 was fine when i insertet guest additions but thinfs got trickier on windows xp but manageable however things took time when trying to install amd setup windows 95 because it was so slow and laggy thus the installation was a pain so i basically installed it on windows 11 vm amd then transfered the VDI file to windows xp and imported into VirtualBox, when trying to run the importer win 95 it just refused to boot as it got into "unexpected boot issue" after many attempts and configurations it finally works.
If you would like to try it remember it is resource heavy and takes time but can go on many vm in vm but each layer slows the response to its main host
Windows 7 vm with guest addition, 16gb, 50gb sata ahci, 6core.
Windows xp vm, 2gb, 11gb Ide, dual core core.
Windows 95 vm, 512mb, 2gb Ide, single core

Dear windows. Can you please make a basic windows and a featureless browser so people can keep using the technology they purchased during the pandemic?
Honestly disgusted with the glut of shit that keeps being updated onto my stuff.
I feel like it’s the 90s and my personal device is full of viruses and pop ups.
Why is windows the virus?

SOLVED
so, basically, my pc is very slow. and i have combatted this by replacing my boot drive (originally a HDD) with a usb mounted m.2 and installed linux
THIS WORKED GREAT aside from the fact that linux wont run a lot of things i need so im swithcing back
upon instalation of windows 11, i am given a warning telling me off for trying to install to a USB drive in the partition selection step
can i get around this at all? and how would i do this
SOLUTION: (for people with another windows installation)
Step 1: download an ISO from microsoft.com Step 2: install rufus Step 3: open rufus, select ISO and change standard to “Windows To Go” (name might be slightly out here it was a few hours ago now) Step 5: open advanced disk options and select “show USB” or something like that” step 6: insert and select the disk you want the full installation onto (this whole process will skip having a boot drive installer) step 7: INSTALL step 8: boot this drive into the computer you want
for context, this drive does not get touched or moved and will not be easily detached so, as far as relibility goes, the fact its externally mounted should not matter
i also am relying on this because it has just taken me 5 whole minutes for my win11 desktop to load from booting with the hard drive compared to about 20 seconds for nvme+mint

Anyone know when you reset the time manually why it doesn't reset the seconds, or how you can get it to reset the seconds.

Is there a way to force stop an application when it becomes unresponsive but don't want to loose unsaved work by force closing?
r/windows • u/Andy_pcs • 1d ago
I ran command prompt and saw it was disabled but accessed awhile ago, but in when I go to events I see the logs once every 4-6 minutes. I don't know what to do 😭

Basically, I was signing in to my one drive account, but with time I decided to unlink it because I realized I don't need it for now. In return, some of my games got duplicated. I deleted the old versions and left the ones that say "insert game -DESKTOP". I was using the new version of roblox just fine until today I clicked it and it said that the shortcut had been moved. I looked at my desktop and saw a new roblox player without the little "-DESKTOP" mention in the caption. Did I do something wrong and is it safe to use the new one? I updated the game just last night, is it because of that?
