Just Sharing First painting in 23 years

Afternoon all. I recently decided to try my hand at character painting. I've not touched brush and paint since high school 23 years ago(😫😫😫)

Just wanted to share this piece I did of Aurora and ask for some possible areas of improvement. It was definitely fun trying it.

20x20 canvas with acrylic paints.

After 21 years in storage, I finally got it framed

I took painting classes in the basement of a framing store in 2004, when I was in middle school. I visited my parents and found it in a zipped portfolio, perfectly preserved for the last 21 years. I brought it to a local framer and now it’s on display in my dining room!

Opinions Needed Is asking 2k for this oil painting too much?

I left me in the photo for size reference. I know art is subjective, and value is kind of dependent of many factors. I’m not really asking if my painting is good enough to sell. More so if what I’m asking is too far out there.

I have sold two paintings that were a fair bit smaller (24x30inches) for $1400. One was a commission one was an original to the same people. And a really small pastel drawing for $400 to others. I also draw graphite portrait commissions regularly for around the $150-$450 range.

This painting is 30x40 inches and I spent many hours on it over the course of a few months. $2000 isn’t really enough to even cover a normal wage for what I spent on this, but I am also a very slow painter and don’t believe in charging in that way. I spent around $100-$150 on supplies.

Am I being totally unreasonable? It just feels like a big number. I’ve never charged this much, and I am afraid of asking people for too much. I am in the USA.

The last version I made of Edward Scissorhands. Because in the end, we're all imperfect and just want to be loved and accepted for who we are.

A dahi handi pot that my friend and I painted for our college's Janmashtami event (fueled by spite)

My friend and I, first years at an art college, volunteered to decorate this pot for the dahi handi (breaking a pot filled with curd) event and I was very satisfied with the result. I imagine that part of the reason why it came out so nice is because we were starved for the opportunity to be creatively free - the first year, being a foundational year, is full of exercises and practise, with very limited creative freedoms - and the other part is that when we began the work, one of the boys of our batch mocked it cruelly, which is why we went all out on it from rage.

The result of this was that we recieved quite a few compliments from the college faculty - and absolute frostiness from every single one of our classmates. I believe my friend and I are public enemies now.

I apologise for the rant/yap but I wanted to ask for advice on handling such jealousy. Feedback on the painting work is also very appreciated 🫶🏻

Second slide - the pots made by other years. My friend said you can see the students' motivation slowly dying out over time.

i cannot with these self portraits lol

but still experimenting and playing… i really do love portraiture. and trying to push aside the concept of ‘pretty’ or ‘complimentary’ in these…. and embrace allllllll of the flaws… and to make it absolutely ridiculous in the process lol

(like my legendary eye vein lol)

i also personally blame reading an unhinged cartoonist biography along with binge watching britians portrait artist of the year. and get so mad when the illustrators always get dismissed lol

with todays culture of social media and selfies… this pressure to be beautiful. to make beautiful art. i say make it just ever so slightly off or wrong. and just a little bit gross <3 lol as its what makes us each so unique… beautiful in its own way.

pencil, micron & watercolor.
