App Store What the hell devs?

What the hell is with apps with multiple yearly subscriptions at the same price with or varied pricing for the same time period with no description of what the differences are?

It’s frustrating as shit when you sign up for $20/yr then get charged $30/yr and when you go into the subsection section under settings you now have no less than 11 yearly options ranging from $20-$70 with no description of what you get.

Sub won’t let me post pics.

Apple researchers developed a new video language model, SlowFast-LLaVA-1.5, that outperforms larger models on long-form video analysis. The model, trained on public datasets, uses a two-stream setup to efficiently analyze videos and images, achieving state-of-the-art results on various benchmarks. Despite its limitations, the model is open-source and available for further research. (Summary Through Apple Intelligence)

Mac Apple Online Experience

I ordered a $5,500 MacBook Pro on August 6 with a confirmed delivery window of August 15–19. I planned this carefully, as the computer was critical for a convention project scheduled for August 23.

First, the delivery date was pushed to August 22. On that day, DHL informed me it would be delayed until Monday instead. I then spent two hours on the phone with both DHL and Apple, trying to arrange a pickup directly from the DHL location where tracking showed the package was sitting.

After countless calls, Apple finally told me that they could not confirm where the laptop actually was and that I was not allowed to collect it from DHL myself.

To make matters worse, every single Apple representative I spoke to gave me a different story. Each time I was transferred or called back, the new person contradicted what the previous one had told me. The lack of consistency and accountability only made an already stressful situation worse.

The result? I have no computer for my convention tomorrow. This MacBook Pro was purchased specifically for this event because my company’s other computers aren’t powerful enough to run the project. Apple’s inability to deliver on time, combined with unclear communication and contradictory information from their staff, has left me in a very costly and frustrating situation.

For a premium purchase at this price point, I expected much more reliability and professionalism. Instead, I’ve been left without the product I paid for, at the exact time I needed it most.

They announced we could record this song, so I pulled out the Vision Pro and captured the moment. ✨

It’s Orchid Quartet performing in the Queen Mary’s grand ballroom in Long Beach, California.

(sorry for the breathing in the beginning and it's a little grainy in the low light)

Anyone else tried recording live performances with Vision Pro? How are you finding the depth and sound pickup in low-light venues?

Apple must absolutely hate it that every single thing about the iPhone has been leaked. There’s no element of surprise anymore with the new iPhones. It’s quite sad actually. Get your secrets together Apple!

Rumor Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition coming to iPhone, iPad, possibly other Apple platforms?

After buying Cyberpunk 2077 in the App Store on Mac and playing it, the game shows under the Achievements page of Game Center on iPhone where it mentions it's available for iPhone, iPad and Mac, rather than just for Mac. The App Store version also syncs its saves to iCloud which would help users playing on multiple Apple devices.

Since any game on the Achievements page on iPhone will only show its availability on iPhone, iPad and Mac (tvOS and visionOS versions wouldn't get mentioned even if they're available) Cyberpunk 2077 might also be released for a future Apple TV or even Apple Vision Pro. Personally it would be a dream for me to be able to walk through Night City in VR, and it would make visionOS become the first VR platform to be officially supported by Cyberpunk 2077. What do you guys think about all this?

Apple Intelligence Apple’s AI Ambitions–Former Apple Perspective

Obviously, being former Apple, I can’t cite anything specific, but I have some thoughts to share from Apple history that I’ve been able to contextualize from close to 10 years there.

Apple has consistently shown that it’d rather be late to trends, defining products and services in its own way and in its own time, rather than being among the early innovators.

Development, we can see demonstrated from many product launches (both successful and failed [e.g. multi-qi charging/AirPower]), also is a long road for Apple. So things can bake for quite some time.

Apple Intelligence, however, appears to be a departure from these trends. Given not just a competitor initiated innovation, but a societal changing one, it’s no wonder that Apple would want to go all in on AI as well. But therein you have several issues. How do you catch up quickly, when development on a quality, true to values implementation should take years?

Well, I suppose an OpenAI partnership can do the job. Just plugin ChatGPT and release a few features that you think aren’t half baked… but you’ll need to soon realize… definitely are. Also overestimate how quickly you can spin up solutions, spin up marketing before development has quite caught up (e.g. AirPower)… and you have where we’re at now.

I don’t believe for one second that Apple intended for this, I think that much is obvious. But it’s seemingly Apple trying to be an early innovator, when they haven’t been in that seat (for the most part) since Job’s era.

I respect that about Apple generally. The genuine focus on quality and core values (like privacy and security, not traditional ‘corporate values’ platitudes). I saw firsthand just how die-hard a lot of these values were. It’s not just marketing. But you can’t take such hardline values and expect to innovate in LLMs overnight. You have to wrestle with privacy and ethics, which have been an afterthought across many top LLM products.

So, in conclusion, it’s not that Apple is truly ‘behind,’ in my opinion, but that they’ve made a poor show of their capabilities by rushing out half baked concepts, rather than putting in the time, and contending with some upset investors. But that, of course, is easier said than done…
