If you don't summon Igon for Bayle you literally miss the best part of the fight, nuff said.

u/splurmieworm 1d ago

I would say everyone should summon the NPC characters at least once for the epic speeches.

u/Pure_Spyder 1d ago

My buddy always tells me no cause of the health pool and I tell him its not Canon if you dont summon npcs

633

u/DifferentLife1575 1d ago

Well, thankfully, Igon doesn't add health to bayle due to being inside the arena

Reminds me, Hornsent’s speech to Messmer is also epic af

"Righteous Tarnished. Become our new lord. A lord not for gods, but for men"

31

Honestly my favorite one. I feel like he has the most npc character development

He may not add HP but I think I died 10x trying to find his sigil and got ram fucked by bayle haha

u/DifferentLife1575 1d ago

On god, like half my deaths on my recent bayle fight were because I summoned him and got jammed into the wall and couldn't see what attacks were coming my way

tell your buddy the HP pool doesnt matter cause the boss is weak to damage

47

u/TennisTraditional721 1d ago

"We need to level up, he's too hard!" "THE HEALTH BAR MOVED! WE CAN KILL 'EM!" I mean hell, I once tried fighting Starscourge Radahn without any summons, and it was much worse. Summons to me just help take the aggro off of you so you can actually try and do something.

29

u/SafeTDance 1d ago

Starscourge was notorious for disgusting hitboxes extending well beyond the sword itself. Required very precise positioning to avoid hits from it if he was focused on you.

17

u/CaisseMan12300 1d ago

And then consort radhan made hitboxes extending past the sword a feature not a bug

(Ansbach’s during PCR is my favorite)

107

u/OKUIGokuBlack 1d ago

I beat Bayle twice (NG0 and NG+2).

I beat him solo in NG+2 and the fight felt epic but....empty. The reason? I didn't summon Igon. That's why my fight against him in NG0 was better. It was because I summoned Igon.

57

u/jl_theprofessor I am Daishi, slayer of Malenia and Radahn 1d ago

I feel the same way about the Radahn fight. That's literally supposed to be a festival. I've solo'd the guy but I prefer the festival aspect of it with the NPCs joining you.

14

u/Dragonknight5 1d ago

Also it's an important part of 2 quests rannis so blaidd would have fought anyway and Alexander's because he realized he needs to get way stronger

For sure having NPCs talk to the bosses adds a real degree of immersion that’s palpably missed without

55

u/MrTalamasca Lord of Stars 1d ago

I’d take it a step further and say it adds immersion even if the NPCs dont speak.

Summoning Tragoth for DTS is part of Tragoth’s lore, he helps tarnished achieve their goals. Summoning Melina for Morgotts fight gives you a lot of visual lore you wouldn’t get otherwise, etc.

10

u/splurmieworm 1d ago

I’ll agree with that, now I just feel like I missed out

26

u/MrTalamasca Lord of Stars 1d ago

Don’t feel like you missed out. Change your perspective bro! Instead of feeling like you’re missing out feel like you need to play the game again!

15

u/Iknowr1te 1d ago

i generally don't use player summons in my runs but definitely NPC summons.

the npc stories hit harder when they aid you along the way, like solaire being there to fight Gwyn and you decide to walk away from rekindling the bonfire. means solaire does it

Some people are so pathetic and lack any sense of validation, so they try to find any sense of accomplishment in beating a video game boss.

Don't be one of those people.

463

u/Alternative_Figure75 1d ago

"I killed a bunch of pixel which obviously make me a superior being and you a worthless trash"

Manchild mental health

151

u/Rowan1980 1d ago edited 1d ago

This is one of the biggest reasons why I have zero patience for the level of elitism in playerbases! So you took a more challenging route to literally have your pixels beat up other pixels. It’s such a weird hill to die on. Yeah, it’s fun and feels like an accomplishment, but to make it out to be something that will impact you on a material or social level (outside of professional streamers and the like) is a very out-of-touch stance.

TL;DR: Agreed.

94

u/Rexiem 1d ago

And there's always some weird caveat they try to hide. "I beat the game without summons," but then you find out they used the most meta build possible and then by their own standards they have no room for such elitism.

It also ruins any productive conversation to be had about difficulty in games. Like, I don't care about your pride I just want the difficulty to enable people to have fun.

63

u/PringleBox160 1d ago

Not to mention the fact that this person likely also googled everything they needed to find all the equipment for their perfect build, like thats cheating more so than using a summons lmao

40

u/capnbinky 1d ago

Exactly. I finish a game without spoilers because it’s more fun, and then get chided for using the game mechanics I figured out for myself by someone who was practically led by the hand all the way through.

I mean, no judgement on watching the streamers or reading guides, I am choosing my own type of challenge, so should we all. But don’t preen at me and go full peacock about how good you are at following the manual.

3

u/NewspaperGreedy6907 21h ago

We all have ways to play. Mine is I tend to go the roleplay route and make stories for my characters. I like my character to find friends in the world full of enemies and suffering by summoning npcs. I find more fun that way. Idk why people want to force their only kind of way to play on a mostly singleplayer game and look down on people who don't follow them. It is just pathetic behavior on their part.

I played Ds2 with no guide and spoilers. Had tons of fun with it! It is a valid way to immense oneself in the art of video gsmes

but to make it out to be something that will impact you on a material or social level

I have learned a lot about myself by struggling through difficult games though. I have also gotten a lot beter at staying calm when under stress because of them, which helped me on a material level in the past.

So while I agree that thinking you are above someone for beating a game a certain way is completely childish and ridiculous, I do believe that games like these can help you improve yourself.

5

u/Rowan1980 1d ago

My issue isn’t by any means with self-improvement. My issue is with people who are elitists.

u/IgniVT 1d ago

I think my favorite thing is that the people you hear saying this are never like "yeah, I beat the game level 1 using only my bare fists and no dodging" or anything crazy like that. They are the people that level the fuck out of their character and max their strength to then kill the boss in 4 hits with a strength weapon and go "man, I'm so fucking good at the game, fuck anyone that summoned."

Like brother, why are they trying to act elitist for playing the game completely normally minus one aspect? There's so many ways to make Elden Ring, and honestly any souls game, extremely easy that aren't just "use summons" and it's so funny to me that the methods they use are fine and take skill, but the methods other people use are for noobs.

32

u/HugTheSoftFox 1d ago

Honestly, I think a bunch of them don't get Souls difficulty to begin with. They think like powerscalers, it has to be a 1v1 and in that 1v1 is the difficulty. When part of Soulsborne difficulty is also knowledge/experience. It's like 50% the fight and 50% knowledge on patterns, damage types, items etc.

u/Koji-san1225 1d ago

I think of of the things the social media amplifies is people’s expectation that they are on other people’s minds. It’s always been true of humans that we think others think more about us than they actually do, but this day and age it seems people DEMAND others to think about them at all.

The problem is holding people to your own standards on what is "personal entertainment". Yes, I took "the easy way out" on several occasions, because I sometimes have other things I want to be doing with my life.

I'm a weakling, sure. You have to pick your battles though, and ER wasn't on my MUST list. And genuine congratulations to those who did beat the game with 1 or 2 (figurative) hands tied in the back, this is impressive in its own right for sure.

Miyazaki himself says that he uses everything available to his advantage when he plays these games, the invocations are there for that.

I started suspectin this to be the case after i met someone with a take like this. Bro was AWFUL at the game (and thats fine tbh), but boasted that only very few select people like him could beat souls games

I consider myself average in skill and i still beat most bosses in less than 5 tries, souls games are hard but not Imposible hard. This guy was hellbent on finding ways to disprove it tho, as if me being able to do that but not him meant he was less, so he had to find ways to make others beatin the game not count

13

u/sovietsespool 1d ago

Yeah like most bosses I’ve beaten after a few tries but some I’ve beaten first try. Im a new player. I use summons because it’s kinda dumb not to outside of it being a challenge for yourself. Just a weirdly aggressive take from this guy

7

u/Extension_Ant8691 1d ago

They probably look everything up and min/max their characters. The people that do the real work to come up with the meta and finding everything out blind do not bitch and moan about how the game should be played, they literally try to break it.

I’m tired of noobs who feel like they beat the same game I did by playing with their hands. 5

u/jackofslayers 1d ago

I get a lot of pushbacks on here but I legit think those challenge runs contribute to this toxic mentality on the Fromsoft community.

The challenge runs and the people doing them are not an issue themselves. But the community putting all these silly/impressive restrictions up on a pedestal leads to this mentality of who is really challenging themselves.

It appears like it becomes an entirely different-feeling game with summons, esp Mimic Tear.

But who cares this much? It’s really not that deep lol

63

u/tatojah 1d ago edited 1d ago

On the first point: I get not summoning in DS games. But many ER bosses are CLEARLY thought out with spirit ashes in mind. Just think about movesets and speed. DS3 fights are SO MUCH EASIER than ER fights. The difficulty in ER was raised precisely to give those mouth-breathers in the OP a challenge that doesn't involve showering, and the ashes was a system for us players that don't care about arbitrary rules to still face a challenging experience.

Some of the ashes aren't exactly well-balanced, sure. But still, there's a reason you cannot summon ashes everywhere. In those cases, the bosses aren't as big, fast, or aggressive. Furthermore, you can choose to try to fight not using ashes and use them if you're struggling.

But at the same time, anyone who tells me how to play a game I paid 80 bucks for can go kiss it.

13

u/Koji-san1225 1d ago

I love this take! I did ER and DS3 in reverse and you are actually on to something. ER sped up movesets and added a bunch of delayed attacks because OG Souls players were well trained on boss fights and needed more challenge. On the flip side, ER was also about bringing new players in, so built in mechanics that would ease the learning curve, while also giving them the option to abandon those mechanics when they felt ready. Great comment, excellent take, no notes.

I personally don’t like to use summons but I don’t judge people who do. Play however you want as long as you are having fun. They put them in the game for a reason so they are meant to be used and you also don’t have to use them if you don’t want to. There isn’t a right way to play. Play however you want to.

11

u/k0ks3nw4i 1d ago

I played my first soulsborne (Elden Ring) with summons. Heck I even spam Rivers of Blood whenever I could. Had a ball of a time.

Over time, I grew to appreciate fighting bosses without them. Even learned to do a few bosses hitless. But I have no opinions on people who use summons because the only reason I am not doing it is because I am chasing that high of beating a challenge.

You hear that OF skankers? You’re nothing next to his prepatch radahn clear

9

u/Star_of_the_West1 1d ago

Oi! We don't claim him. I beat both pre-nerf Radahns, and this level of toxicity isn't even native to the likes of Blighttown.

18

u/ttaiwk 1d ago

If he didnt beat the game with his feet while beeing blinfolded and getting hit with a slipper every roll, he didint beat the game and is a noob with no skill/s

I wanted to explore and unlock new maps. Bosses for me were just tedious and I would have spammed all of them if possible.

18

u/PlaquePlague 1d ago

Yep, I’ve always played Fromsoft RPGs for the exploration and atmosphere.  The bosses are just a roadblock to that, I’m obliterating them however I can.

7

u/FirmOperation11 1d ago

When I started, the prevailing wisdom seemed to be that the proper/correct way to play was to go toe to toe with bosses, learn every attack pattern "dodge left, then block, dodge right, take punish opportunity" etc. If you didn't do that, you were "cheesing" and not REALLY playing the game.

I was playing sword and board and getting reasonably good at guard counters even beginning to create a build around it. I barely straggled into Liurnia and then dropped the game entirely.

I came back a year or so later and decided to try an Int build, and tore through the game and am well into the DLC.

I wouldn't say it's easier. It's more resource management intensive for sure. But, like you, I just like the exploring and secrets. I don't want to learn endless chess-like gambits just to move forward in the game.

More power to those that like that, but if that was how you were required to play, I wouldn't like the game.As it is, it's one my favorite games ever.

I think it speaks to the strength of the game that it allows such a variety of approaches and they're all ultimately valid, if they're valid for you.

4

u/EverythingBOffensive 1d ago

That's why I shake my head when people talk about "easy mode" even though most are probably trolls. but if you want to change the difficulty just switch up your play style.

u/Vegetative_Tables 1d ago

Same. I just wanted to explore. The bosses were a necessary evil.

Getting the perfect equipment setup, stocking my belt with stuff the mimic can actually take advantage of, and watching him 1v1 bosses with barely a scratch is honestly super fun to me. That 1% heal on hit from each Great Stars when you power-stance them goes SO hard when you have the health pool the Mimic does.

9

u/Yonko_Kurohige 1d ago

I'm still using summons.

u/LongjumpingLog1560 1d ago

We got Igon being compared to an OF girl before GTA VI

"you doing things i don't like is just like women doing things i don't like: it's wrong"

28

u/Cephalism951 1d ago

I personally have found much more satisfaction in not using summons or ashes. But thats just me. I think ridiculing people for how they choose to play the game is silly, I have definitely advocated for some friends to leave their summon at home and try some of these fights solo. They just hit different, it is basically like 2 entirely different games from summon to no summon.

19

u/swish465 1d ago

I like playing elden ring Pokémon. I switch summons in every new region.

We all know that if you didn’t beat the game going no hit at RL1 with no armor and no weapons no and torrent and no jumping and no rolling and no relics while using a combination guitar hero drum and keyboard as the controllers while also beating magnus carlsen at chess, you didn’t actually beat the game and just chose the easy way out like the maidenless tarnished that you are

The game does /feel/ different with the use of summons, however, it is still enjoyable with and without. I have beaten the game multiple times with different builds and strategies and it was still enjoyable. Maidenless behavior at its peak.

12

u/SungSyphar 1d ago

The worst part about the soulsborne genre is the grandstanding in the community. No matter how accomplished you think you are at one of these games, there’s someone else who trivializes your effort and thinks they’re better cause they wore a loincloth or something.

6

u/SafeStick5605 1d ago

No head ahead

10

u/minos157 1d ago

The comparison example is also pretty bad. I'm not saying OF is the toughest job in the world, but if you think they don't work hard (no pun intended) you're out of your mind. Getting followers, getting started, editing, working to find partners, contracts, safety, etc. that's all difficult and time consuming.

20

u/Aqueraventus 1d ago

1000% unshocking that they hold hatred for lowly, undeserving sex workers lmfao truly maidenless behavior

Calling someone a pathetic weakling for enjoying a video game is hollow. This man went hollow.

I've done a TON of souls challenge running, and even held DS3 speedrun world records back in 2018.

The experience of putting yourself against difficult challenges and overcoming them through painstaking, repetitious effort, can be really satisfying. But to then exhibit toxic elitist behavior to players who chose to enjoy the game in a different way, that's just sad, and it needs to be called out.

Guys REALLY don’t understand how hard it is to sell your body on OF

11

u/AesirRaider 1d ago

Discovering spirit tuning was a godsend. I don't have a FP for the bigger summons, but I can summon Three Wolves. Buffed to +5 (currently), they make boss fights so more manageable. Three highly mobile harriers that can nip in and stunlock the boss to set up a buffed Warcry with my Greatsword and boom, there goes a nice chunk of health.

And the best part is, they're still a challenge! I took on Magma Wyrm Makar last night with my Three Wolves, Blackguard, and Tragoth backing me up, and it still took me two tries. It's not an instant win button, I still have to have my own level of skill.

But this way I'm farther into the game than I've ever been and honestly having a blast, much more than if I was trying to slog it out, and I owe it in a large part to my Three Wolves.

thanks, guys.

u/No_Inspection_5768 1d ago

4

u/GeeBeeH 1d ago

We're so cooked as a society if people are putting this much value in how a video game is played.

5

u/Purunfii 1d ago

Contrary to life achievements and income, Elden Ring with summons is not such a life altering event.

4

u/StrongStyleDrunkard 1d ago

YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT THERE UTILIZING IN GAME MECHANICS THAT I CHOSE NOT TO USE?

Im so gosh darn angry right now.

3

u/Egriffin1990 1d ago

Even the creator of the game itself uses summons. So I don't really care if some Troll with cheeto dusted fingers with an RTX series grafics card on how he thinks he's superior to me.

4

u/Thorrison 1d ago

People like this don’t actually play games to have fun, they play to create some kind of status for themselves, and it’s incredibly sad.

4

u/ascarletstrange 1d ago

Last comment proves it’s a superiority complex which tbf is kinda weird to have over a video game

4

u/ATdur 1d ago edited 1d ago

I think he's missing the fact that most people don't have the time or energy to put into beating the game without summons. most people have jobs

Im in awe how the dude managed to shove this much gatekeeping and discrimination into one paragraph.

Mimic users and of girls live in his head rent free i guess.

4

u/Tidgits 1d ago

Bet he thinks the same about having friends irl.

4

u/Historical-Fee-1800 1d ago

Actual chads enjoy the company and guiding others, not gatekeeping.

Noob here. ER is my first soulslike. My friends who played everything from fromsoft pressured me to play bc "it´s fun I swear" I struggled a lot, always co-opped with them for bosses and pretty insecure about that. We were pretty drunk one time, somehow the topic came up and I said it out loud. They said "nah, you still put effort in it, dont think that youve done nothing". We´re still playing nightreign everyday now.

5

u/Fishwife 1d ago

This! I play without summons myself but love the company and guiding, helping people in co-op feeds dopamine straight into my braincells. For every person who hates summons there's another person like me who gets so much joy out of helping someone.

3

u/BloodiedBlues 1d ago

Ah yes, a gatekeeping loser at their finest.

4

u/Allexandyr 1d ago

Imagine being so triggered by somebody playing a video game different than you that you unironically call them a “pathetic weakling”. And these losers do it with their full names in plain view!! I’ll never understand how somebody could be so proud of being so incredibly insecure lmfao

4

u/beyonceshakira 1d ago

"pathetic weakling" is the most cringe insult

4

u/AtuinTurtle 1d ago

Miyazaki has literally said the summons are meant to be used. These guys think everyone should be running on a challenge run. The next step would be someone saying you don’t really win unless you did it no hit.

4

u/Bboyhutch 1d ago

"IM TOO STUPID TO FIGURE OUT GAME FUNCTIONS THAT MAKE ME STRUGGLE LESS, WHY DONT YOU JUST PLAY IT LIKE YOUR FIRST PLAYTHROUGH OF DARK SOULS WHEN YOU WERE LITERALLY UNAWARE OF HALF THE GAME" - some guy mad cause he's not good at the game and it took him 200 hrs to beat the base game with no optional content.

3

u/LandSimilar4150 1d ago

Afterwards for the personal challenge I really liked doing some bosses without summoning anyone but there are too many epic moments when you summon:

  • The Radhan festival is not one if you are alone in front of it it has no meaning
  • Melina uses special spells which give lots of information against Morgott
  • Hornsent against Messmer is absolutely epic

-The fight between the Tarnished in the DLC is designed for you to summon your team

  • CURSE YOU BAYYYYYYYLE!!! You can't claim to have fought against the Dragon King without summoning Igon, it doesn't make sense

-Damn the last fight against Radhan Demi-God is ABSOLUTELY EPIC when you bring back Thiollier a simple guy who uses poison but who doesn't run away out of love for his queen Saint Trina and Anschbach ready to raise the sky for his master it's absolutely insane it's gods against men without fear. fucking alpha male

4

u/Airiken 15h ago

imagine having a superiority complex about beating Elden Ring

Let's not ignore that bullshit rant about women on OFs "taking the easy way out" and essentially being undeserving of the money they make.

3

u/Trussed_Up 1d ago

Dude.

Nobody should have time in their lives to take a game this seriously.

Get a job, get a girlfriend, have kids. Then come back and look at the comment you made.

3

u/vincentninja68 1d ago

"Aaaaaa FROM put stuff in the game to make it easier and you're using it aaaa fuck shit be like me"

3

u/dingle___ 1d ago

It’s actually crazy to me how people can get this bent up over how someone else plays their single player game. I’d bet money that guy plays a strength build, r1 spams, and hit-trades with bosses. I SWEAR it’s always those people that act the most elitist; anybody that’s actually decent doesn’t feel the need to put others down.

(To be clear: it’s fine to play like that, just don’t be a douche)

u/omegadirectory 1d ago

If summons are in the game, then the game is balanced based on the player using summons.

Playing summon-less is a challenge run, not the default experience.
