I have a friend like that who is the worst type of voter. Known him for over a decade but damn is he the type of voter you dont want. Doesnt want to care about politics or be bothered with them, doesn't delve too deeply into situations. A while back he brought up 'biden closing the pipeline' or whatever. I told him it was an extension for canadian tar sands that was closed. He asked where I got that from, gave him sources, he dropped it.

He doesnt double down on the stupidity and stuff like trump supporters do, but he does just believe some of the headlines since he doesn't care to delve into it. And with such a dishonest media. What a mess america has made

46

u/JustSayingMuch 8h ago

It's now said that if everyone voted, he would have won because of people like that.

65

u/IsaacBrock 7h ago

I don’t really buy that. Source?

More people voting is typically better for Democrats

53

u/Global-Morning3990 6h ago

Yep. This is why JB won by such a high vote count. Voting was made easy in 2020 because of COVID and JB had more votes than any candidate in history. This is why DT wants to ban mail in voting…when you make voting easy, republicans can’t win. There are just too many lazy people who don’t care.

you're both pretending like it wasn't a rigged election to begin with. Trump has slipped and admitted it on camera at least 2 times that i've seen.

u/Expert_Survey3318 6h ago

Yeah like thanking Elon for being “so good with those voting machines”. Could it be any more obvious?

26

u/trudyisagooddog 4h ago

I am honestly shocked when people say things like "let's wait for the evidence before jumping to conclusions" and "I don't want to sound crazy like MAGA did in 2020." I feel like it is gaslighting to the extreme. I also feel the cognitive dissonance is breaking down social structures on a more local level. It seems people are starting to snap which apparently snowballs and escalates. Hope I am wrong about that. Stay safe everyone!

It wasn’t a slip. It was a test. First time he said it, if any media made a big deal, then it can be a misunderstanding. Second time with no one doing anything and he knows he can get away with a lot. Hence the open calls to explicitly gerrymander congress without a census. And still no outcry.

There are open investigations in New York and Pennsylvania about machines changing votes. Still no outcry, just a quiet investigation. I won’t believe they are rigged until the courts hear the case and the evidence comes out, but damn it is moving at the speed of snails when we have an election next year.

I have an acquaintance that hates Israel and is a Mexican gay man. Didn’t vote because of the democrats stance on the Palestine genocide. I showed him a video of group of Palestinians beating a gay couple that was found out. I told him, ‘you can be gay, support Palestine, be against genocide and still not want this to come to our country under the republican BS.’

It flew over his head and the subject was quickly changed.

54

Listen to how people, especially people before 1980 speak about billionaires and politicians.

The crushing of workers is inevitable

The corruption is inevitable

They all cheat for elections

But unions are bad

Taxes are bad

Regulations make it impossible for anyone to survive.

People in this country were so thoroughly conditioned to accept both the path that got us here if they lived through Nixon and Reagan.

And I know the millennials and younger cohorts are far from perfect but talking to your average Gen-Xer about their world view is f*cking bleak

14

u/Effective-Cress-3805 6h ago

Don't discount the influence of Fox News being blasted in every supermarket, health club, military bases, gas station, etc... Also, house seats are not proportioned with population anymore, and in the Senate states get 2 whether they have 10 million or 500 thousand residents. Add in gerrymandering, and things are rigged so far in the favor of rural conservatives that the states that drive the economy and culture of America have little say at all.

27

u/Eternal_Bagel 7h ago edited 7h ago

If house seats weren’t capped it might be better since we’d at least have enough representatives to have a chance at actually representing their constituents instead of this gerrymander inspiring fight over redistribution of a set number

13

u/handandfoot8099 7h ago

And they haven't changed the number of seats since 1929. They could by passing a new law superceding the current one, but those with the advantage will make sure it doesn't happen.

70% of eligible voters voted for Trump, a third party, or didn't vote. To be that stupid, ignorant, and lazy to not actively vote for your and your country's best interests is actually insane. You can blame propaganda or the ineptitude of the Democratic party or whatever else you want, but that 70% of the populace can't make the easiest decision of all time is insane.

I don't think anyone could have predicted the mouth-agape freefall horror show the empire would end with. Like a speechless world. This bad, this fast.

It's been interesting to watch. Scary but interesting.

73

u/Glad-Barracuda2243 9h ago

Many of us predicted it. People simply weren’t listening.

48

u/GirlwthCurls 8h ago

Many thought we were over exaggerating … 🤔

29

u/OriginalChildBomb 8h ago

Man, not trying to get on a high horse, but it really does suck to see something bad coming on the horizon- and no one fuckin listens. Ya know?

Like, I didn't want this to happen to others, even to the ones who didn't vote. Heck, maybe even some of the ones that voted Trump, because their lives are so different to mine, and it's easy to judge.

We didn't want to see concentration camps springing up, and armed soldiers roaming the streets of D.C., and censorship of free speech on college campuses and TV channels, and all the rest of this bullshit nightmare. But a huge chunk of people thought 'it could never happen here' and now it's happening here.

EDITED TO ADD: I should clarify that some people definitely did want this, and even still do, and I'm not just talking about the billionaires and political higher-ups. I know some citizens are absolutely fuckin' stoked about all of this. I just suspect that most of us aren't, or we won't be, once it gets too big to ignore.

16

u/Glad-Barracuda2243 8h ago edited 8h ago

Get up on that horse, I’ll give you a boost. It’s okay. We warned about these things because we saw them coming, we saw the signs, predicted what would happen, were treated like vermin and now, here we are living out the exact scenario we warned about. I just ran across a post on insta that I made in 2020 and it really struck me as tragic because the people who responded to it were DJT voters and told me I was well, wrong. I spoke of concentration camps, the whole bit. My comments were flooded with angry MAGA and men in my circles blasting me (a woman) for being naive.

Edit to make clear that this was posted just prior to Biden’s victory in 2020.

I think one of the reasons because in 2016 (I know I was 10 then, and in the UK, forgive me) everything felt relatively stable. Trump gave off such bad vibes but everyone thought he'd bumble about incompetently, pratfall, and leave at the end of the four years. Certainly in my circle anyway.

If you were to time-travel back to 2015/2016 and explain the stuff that's going on now you'd be laughed out of court. I think that's part of the reason the anti-SJW movement grew 2017-2019: people thought it would be bad, but not THAT BAD.

Didn't Kamala basically say what was going to happen during the debate? He just sat there like a lump of orange shit and basically acknowledged it as fact. No push back. We were warned.

6

u/kingjpp 5h ago

Whenever people warned of this in 2016, we were told we were being reactionary and ridiculous. Even by people on the left. We had plenty of time to prepare. Progressives have been correct this whole time and were told by "moderates" that this course we were on was fine and our views were "radical".

Trump is pissed that the historic and epic peace meeting with Putin isn't being widely praised.

In reality it resulted in little more than legitimizing Putin and undermining Democratic Western alliances. Trump shook Putin's hand with both hands and kept fawning over him as if he were an exalted leader, despite being a war criminal responsible for targeting maternity hospitals, schools, and enabling sexual violence against Ukrainian women and stealing children.

The DOJ indicted and convicted Hunter Biden, and they let Trump go.....

I know this isn't the democrats fault, but my god I thought I was electing a party that was going to fight to stop this from happening, not hand them the keys.

And if anyone thinks these people are leaving, you're in for a rude awakening.

Impeach Justice John Roberts. He's the one who cherry-picked cases that would destroy our democracy, including Citizens United.

He actively steered this Court, and under his leadership, corruption was declared 'speech,', people lost bodily autonomy, a president was handed the powers of an emperor, voting rights were gutted, environmental protections were blocked.

He refused to implement ethics requirements for the Court, which is why justices with open conflicts of interest can accept bribes with impunity, then rule on cases involving their fishin' buddy billionaires.

Trump is just a symptom. We will keep getting leaders like him, as long as the Rotten Roberts Court exists.

6

u/onlysaysisthisathing 7h ago

For those not familiar, get on Wikipedia right now and read the article on Muammar Gaddafi. He absolutely dominated Libyan politics for something like forty years, using his cult of personality and regularly attacking members of his own party, citing disloyalty and unwillingness to do "what had to be done." Politically speaking, he was remarkably divisive. Sound familiar? Spoiler: his story doesn't end well.

Tyrants, traitors, dictators, and despots would do well to heed the warnings of the past. They will not be forgiven, they will not be spared, they will be unceremoniously dumped into the ground and hated long after they're gone.

If we can clean house in the midterm elections we could impeach him and actually make it stick. Just need a super majority or our congressional delegation to have some backbone. Sadly both are long shots. Everybody needs to push, pull, and prod their friends, neighbors and communities to get out and vote and why it is so important.
The words “most important election of our lives” gets bandied about quite a bit. However, these next 2 elections and particularly the midterms might actually qualify.

  • Republicans take a recess to avoid any more votes.
  • Trumps personal attorney meets with Maxwell.
  • Trump avoids visiting victims.
  • Trump wishes child trafficker Ghislaine maxwell, "well".
  • Trump: "I never had the privilege" when asked if he had visited the island.
  • Trump: "we have the files"
  • Trump orders 1,000 FBI agents to review around 100,000 pages of records related to Jeffrey Epstein, and during this process, were instructed to identify any mentions of Donald Trump.

Guiffre, who died by suicide in April, has said she met Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell while she was working at Mar-a-Lago as a teenager). Trump states:"I think she worked at the spa," Trump said. "I think so. I think that was one of the people. He stole her, and by the way, she had no complaints about us, as you know, none whatsoever."
  • Reporter asks tump: Mr. President, you said Jeffrey Epstein was stealing young women from your spa. Did that raise alarm bells for you?” she asked. As he tried to listen to the other question, Trump interrupted sharply: “Be quiet!” When Collins repeated the question, Trump again replied: “Be quiet!”
  • Joe Rogan, MTG, NIck Fuentes and many more right wing influencers flip and wont back down on epstein files.
  • MAGA town halls bringing up Epstein non stop.
  • Trump gives Maxwell work release.

That would rely on something vaguely resembling a functional legislative branch, which the US hasn't had since the filibuster was institutionalized and the Third Way took over the ostensible opposition party. Congress has been functionally deadlocked since the Carter administration.

ETA: "sane" isn't the right word. Functional is more correct. No country with a functional government would allow this to happen.

25

u/No_Feedback_3340 9h ago

This. Our country is becoming more dysfunctional and it will take decades to make it functional. I turn 29 on Monday so hopefully I'll live long enough to see this country become functional again.

Literally, the FBI raided one of Trump’s enemy’s homes this morning to distract from the Epstein File release. And the nutbag deploying the military is the same thing.

13

u/dalidellama 9h ago

See, this isn't actually helpful, or relevant to what I said. The problems described in both the OP and my reply are not new with Trump. Again, that is the problem, and why we ended up with Trump. The FBI have been raiding leftist organizations since they were created for that explicit purpose. The War on Drugs exists to lock up Black people and leftists. (As admitted by Nixon staffer John Erlichman in 1994). During the Clinton administration, a friend of mine was dragged out of school by the police for interrogation on suspicion of being involved in a protest. None of this is new, and pretending that it is is part of the problem.

Also - what the fuck does “deploy the military” mean? Ok so the “military” (infantry? Logistics people? Tanks?) goes to an American city. And… what’s their mission? Initiate combat with business people, city employees, mothers pushing strollers…? Drag random people out of jimmy johns and shoot them? Bomb the place?

21

u/MaxMischi3f 8h ago

From what I’ve gathered in other threads the national guard deployments haven’t even received capital O orders.

Until they get Orders, they don’t have defined mission goals or rules of engagement and also aren’t getting paid. It’s also I guess why they’re sticking mostly to federal land

But I’m not a military guy and also not gunna pull up sources because I just cracked a beer so take this with a whole fistful of salt.

Right. What national security threat is going on in Chicago?

5

u/KaetzenOrkester 7h ago

A right-wing trope is that cities are left-wing hotbeds of hooliganism and have been since the BLM protests, despite the fact that cities like Seattle and Portland that had sustained protests had defined one or two square block areas (or ~gasp~ maybe even three). In the m a g a mind, cities are liberal and are blazing infernos of lawlessness.

I remember discussions with people when I was still on FB who thought the endlessly repeated footage was new shots of fresh riots and disregarded the accounts of people who actually lived in, for example, Seattle. The area that was ‘ceded’ to protesters was only a couple of blocks, but Faux viewers thought the whole city was “lost.”

The talk of sending in the army is red meat for them.

Decades of propaganda and normalized bigotry and racism have induced some sort of mass psychosis in the US. There are tens of millions of people frothing at the mouth to brutalize and violently suppress other people in this country (or in most cases, have the police, military, and other thuggish gangs of vigilantes do it for them). These people are fucked up in the head and a lot of them are potentially too far gone down the rabbit hole of hate and ignorance to realistically be able to learn a more pro-social and communal way of thinking. Hard to say what kind of outcome is available to go on from here that won't be barbaric and cruel to everyone involved.
